Coinbase·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Coinbase Data Scientist interview with a coding question that looks trivial until you hit the all-nines edge case. Pretty standard technical screen vibe, though the constraint about not converting the array to a big integer directly adds a bit of wrinkle.
  • You're given an array of digits representing a non-negative integer (most significant digit first). Add one to that integer and return the result as an array. You can't just convert the whole thing to a big integer directly. What's your approach and what are the time and space complexities?

“The basic case is easy, just increment the last element.”

Coinbase·Frontend Engineer·Take-home Assignment

May 2026
Coinbase frontend take-home that looked straightforward on paper but had a few gotchas buried in the requirements. The core task was building a list component that fetches from an API, but the real test was whether you'd handle the edge cases properly.
  • Build a reusable list UI component (React, Vue, or Angular) that fetches its data from an HTTP endpoint on mount and on demand, with loading, error, and empty states, stable keys, and correct handling of race conditions and unmount cleanup.

“The empty state and loading spinner are the easy part.”

Coinbase·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Coinbase ML engineer interview was a one-hour live coding session in a Jupyter notebook, basically build a classifier from scratch while someone watches you and asks questions. Not a whiteboard thing, actual messy data you have to wrangle yourself. Felt more like a working session than a traditional interview which I kind of appreciated.
  • Given a messy dataset in a Jupyter notebook, build a classification model end-to-end including light EDA, feature selection, model choice, fitting, and evaluation.
  • Why did you choose this particular model over other options?
  • Is accuracy the right evaluation metric here, given the class distribution in this dataset?

“The 'messy' part is real.”

Coinbase·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Interviewed for a Data Scientist role at Coinbase and got a business case question about diagnosing a revenue drop. Pretty standard diagnostic exercise but it moves fast if you're not already thinking in frameworks.
  • A retailer is seeing a 20% revenue decline versus the prior period. How would you figure out what's driving it?

“I started decomposing revenue into volume and price components, which felt right, but I didn't immediately jump to traffic, conversion, and average order value as separate levers and I think that cost me some points early on.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Coinbase for a software engineer role, focused almost entirely on cross-team collaboration. The engineering manager wanted a real example with measurable results, not just a vague story about working with other people.
  • Walk me through a project where you had to collaborate closely with another team. What was your role, what made it difficult, and what came out of it?
  • How do you handle a situation where another team's priorities conflict with yours and you can't easily escalate?
  • How do you adjust how you communicate when you're talking to engineers versus product managers versus leadership?
  • How do you make sure accountability is clear when multiple teams are working toward the same goal?

“I structured my answer as situation-action-result and picked a project where we had a real dependency conflict with an infra team.”

Coinbase·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Coinbase data scientist interview with a meaty experiment design question that went deeper than I expected. The second half about diagnosing a lift discrepancy is where things got interesting and honestly a bit uncomfortable.
  • Design an A/B test to evaluate whether personalized marketing emails increase purchase conversion rates. Walk through your choice of primary and guardrail metrics, the statistical test you'd use, how you'd set the minimum detectable effect, and how you'd calculate sample size and test duration. Then: after you roll this out to the full user base, a new director reruns the experiment and sees only a 2% lift where the original test showed 20%. What could explain that gap and how would you diagnose it?

“The first part felt fine.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Coinbase system design round for a software engineering role. The interviewer was sharp and knew exactly where to push. My crypto domain knowledge showed some gaps, which didn't help.
  • Design a crypto order placement system that routes to one or more third-party matching engines.

“Got through the core flow okay.”

SQL technical screen for a Data Scientist role at Coinbase. One question, pretty focused, window functions were clearly the expected path.
  • Given a table of integers, write a SQL query that returns each number alongside the cumulative sum of all values less than or equal to it.

“Knew immediately this was a window function thing but second-guessed myself and started writing a self-join first.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Coinbase software engineer interview that was basically one big design problem covering account creation, deposits, transfers, payment flows, and cashback logic. Pretty involved for a single session, lots of edge cases to track.
  • Design an account management system with operations for creating accounts, depositing funds, transferring between accounts, tracking top spenders, processing payments with cashback, and querying payment status.

“This thing kept growing.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Coinbase software engineer interview with a collaborative filtering style coding problem. Pretty interesting problem but the edge cases sneak up on you if you're not careful.
  • Write a function that takes a user and a list of [user, movie, rating] triplets, and returns a list of movies to recommend. Two users are considered similar if they've both rated the same movie 4 or 5. Recommend movies that similar users rated 4 or 5 but the target user hasn't rated yet. Output should have no duplicates.

“I started with the similarity logic and it felt clean enough, group ratings by user, then for each movie the target user rated highly, find others who also rated it highly.”
