Coinbase·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Coinbase data scientist interview with a pretty meaty stats question on A/B testing. One question but they really drilled into it, asking follow-ups that branched in directions I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • You're running an online experiment comparing conversion rates between a treatment and control group. Walk through how you'd compute a 95% confidence interval for the treatment effect by hand, covering the point estimate for absolute lift, the standard error derivation, the CI formula itself, how things change if they ask for relative lift instead, and when the normal approximation breaks down versus when you'd reach for something like a bootstrap or score-based interval.

“This looked like a clean textbook question at first and I thought I had it.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Coinbase frontend engineering interview centered around a multi-step form build in React. The coding portion was fairly scoped but the follow-up discussion questions were where things got real, lots of design and tradeoff territory that I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Build a multi-step form in React with basic user info, address collection, and a review/confirm step. Include field validation, step navigation, disabled state handling, a loading state on submit, and error messaging for failed submissions.
  • Why would you choose a reducer-based state management approach over multiple useState hooks for a form like this?
  • How would you organize the component structure if the number of form steps grew significantly?
  • How do you design error messages in a multi-step form to balance good user experience with clear logic?
  • What performance optimizations would you apply to this kind of component, for example memoization or lazy rendering of steps?

“I went straight to useState for everything and got maybe halfway through before they started nudging me toward thinking about how the state would scale.”

Coinbase·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Coinbase ML engineer interview, coding round focused on implementing a classic unsupervised learning algorithm from scratch. Nothing flashy but it required you to actually know the mechanics, not just name-drop the concept.
  • Implement K-Means clustering from scratch. A distance function is provided. Given a dataset and a value k, initialize k centroids, then repeatedly assign each point to its nearest centroid and recompute centroids as the mean of assigned points. Stop when assignments no longer change or you hit a max iteration limit. Return final assignments and centroids.

“I knew k-means conceptually but writing it out cleanly under pressure is a different thing.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Coinbase software engineer interview with a graph-based coding problem. Pretty focused on efficiency and handling edge cases with lazy user initialization. Felt like a solid technical screen.
  • You're given a stream of events like [user_a, user_b, 'connect'] or [user_a, user_b, 'disconnect']. Connections are undirected. Process all events in order and return how many users end up with more than n connections.

“The core trick is that users appear lazily so you can't preallocate anything.”

Coinbase·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Coinbase PM interview with a product design question that sounds deceptively familiar if you've done consumer Airbnb prep but actually pulls you in a pretty different direction once you start thinking about the buyer.
  • How would you design Airbnb for business travelers and corporate use cases?

“I started down the consumer Airbnb path out of habit and had to course-correct maybe two minutes in.”

Coinbase·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Got a product design question for a PM role at Coinbase. Short and open-ended, which sounds freeing until you're actually sitting there trying to figure out where to start with something as broad as a social crypto bank.
  • How would you design a social crypto bank?

“I spent the first minute just staring at the prompt mentally.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Coinbase coding round for a software engineer role. The problem was banking-themed and manageable in isolation, but the follow-ups piled on fast enough that time became the real enemy.
  • Design a basic banking system. Then extend it to support multiple currencies and the ability to replay transaction history.

“The core part was fine, nothing that should trip you up if you've done any OOP design before.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

May 2026
Went through a CodeSignal OA for a software engineer role at Coinbase and had some questions about how the scoring actually works across multi-level tasks.
  • In a CodeSignal assessment with multiple task levels, do you get partial credit if you only pass some test cases within a level, and how does that partial credit roll up across levels?
  • After submitting a CodeSignal assessment, can you see your score right away, and if not, where do you find it or who do you reach out to?

“Couldn't find a clear answer anywhere before submitting.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Interviewed at Coinbase for what seemed like a product or market design role. One question about token trading dynamics, which sounds deceptively simple until you actually have to answer it.
  • How would you design healthy market dynamics for token trading, balancing the needs of buyers and sellers?

“I went straight to liquidity and spread mechanics, which felt right, but I think I underweighted the incentive design side.”

Coinbase·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Coinbase ML Engineer interview with a coding question that looks straightforward but has some edge case nuance if you're not careful about the boundary conditions.
  • Given an array of numbers, find all local maxima, where a local maximum is an element strictly greater than both its immediate neighbors. Treat out-of-bounds positions as negative infinity. Return the indices or values of all such elements.

“The core logic is simple enough but I almost fumbled the boundary handling.”
