Coinbase·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
PM interview at Coinbase with a metrics-focused case question. Short session, single question, left me second-guessing my answer the whole way home.
  • Coinbase's net income dropped 10% compared to last month. How do you respond?

“I jumped straight into revenue vs cost breakdown and started listing possible causes before really thinking about what a 10% month-over-month swing even means for a crypto company.”

Coinbase·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Coinbase PM interview with a single product design question about crypto remittances. Pretty open-ended, which sounds fun until you realize how many directions it can go.
  • How would you design an international crypto remittance product?

“I went straight to user personas and probably spent too long there.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Coinbase OOD round focused on a cloud storage design problem with some tricky extensions thrown in mid-question. The base problem felt manageable but the follow-up variants added real complexity fast.
  • Design a cloud storage system with user management. Implement add_user and then update_capacity(user), where reducing a user's capacity below their current usage triggers automatic file deletion from largest to smallest until usage fits within the new limit.
  • Extend the cloud storage design to support compress_file and decompress_file operations. Compressing renames the file to file_name.compressed and halves its size; decompressing reverses both. You need to handle cases where the user or file doesn't exist, and enforce that a file can't be compressed twice or decompressed if it isn't compressed.

“The base add_user part was fine, just bookkeeping.”

Coinbase·Frontend Engineer·Take-home Assignment

Apr 2026
Take-home assignment for a frontend role at Coinbase. Pretty straightforward on paper but the component structure part is where they actually care, not just whether it renders.
  • Build a small React app that reads blog post data from a local JSON file and displays a list of posts, each showing its title and body. Clean component structure and basic styling required.

“Seemed simple enough and it mostly was.”

Coinbase·Frontend Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Frontend interview at Coinbase where the whole session was basically one big component design exercise. They wanted a dropdown built live, with accessibility and controlled/uncontrolled patterns, and then a conversation about how you'd harden it for production. Pretty involved for a single question.
  • Build a reusable dropdown component in React that supports controlled and uncontrolled usage, keyboard navigation, outside-click dismissal, and proper accessibility attributes. Then walk through what you'd add to make it production-ready.

“This one is way more surface area than it sounds.”

Coinbase·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
SQL round for an MLE role at Coinbase, basically one big query problem that looked manageable until I started second-guessing the window function choice.
  • Given a products table and an order_items table, compute each product's total revenue for calendar year 2024, then return the top 3 products per category ranked by revenue. Ties should be broken by smaller product_id first. Output should include category, product_id, total_revenue, and rank within category, sorted by category then rank then product_id. Products with zero 2024 sales should be excluded.

“The aggregation part was fine, filter on the year, group by product_id, sum quantity times unit_price.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Coinbase for a software engineer role, focused entirely on real-time stock price delivery at scale. One long question that kept branching into sub-topics for the whole session.
  • Design a system that delivers real-time stock prices to millions of concurrent clients. Cover data ingestion from market feeds, symbol normalization and deduplication, how updates get pushed to clients, API design and throttling, caching and fan-out, latency and consistency tradeoffs, backpressure, horizontal scaling, fault tolerance across regions, and how you'd monitor and test the whole thing.

“This one sprawled in every direction.”

Coinbase·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Coinbase PM interview with a single product design question focused on accessibility. Pretty open-ended, which sounds nice until you're actually sitting there trying to figure out where to start.
  • Pick a fintech app and walk through how you would improve its experience for visually impaired users.

“I went with a crypto trading app because, well, Coinbase.”

Coinbase·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Coinbase system design round focused on extending an in-memory key-value store with snapshot and restore functionality. Pretty deep on the storage representation tradeoffs and how TTLs interact with point-in-time backups.
  • You're given an in-memory key-value store with basic get/set and TTL support. Design a backup() and restore() API that captures a point-in-time snapshot including remaining TTLs, and can bring the store back to that state.
  • What are the tradeoffs between a deep copy, copy-on-write, and an append-only mutation log for storing snapshots? How does each affect memory usage and restore latency?
  • How do you handle concurrent writes that arrive while a snapshot is being created? What consistency guarantees does your snapshot boundary provide?

“The TTL piece is what tripped me up first.”

Did a domain deep dive round for a frontend role at Coinbase where you present a past project while drawing diagrams live. The scope selection is everything here and I don't think I fully appreciated that going in.
  • Walk us through a previous project you worked on, presenting your design and drawing diagrams as you go.

“The scope you pick makes or breaks this.”
