Coupang·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Coupang system design round focused entirely on YouTube, specifically the video upload path. Pretty intense scope for a single session, they wanted real depth not just a surface walkthrough.
  • Design YouTube, with a focus on how large video files get uploaded reliably from client to server.
  • Walk through the post-upload processing pipeline, including transcoding to multiple resolutions and thumbnail generation.
  • How would you handle metadata storage for videos at YouTube's scale?
  • How does CDN distribution work for video content, and what are the tradeoffs in your design?
  • How would you design retry and failure handling across the upload and processing pipeline?
  • What changes when files are multi-gigabyte in size? How does your design hold up?

“This was the whole interview basically.”

Coupang system design round focused entirely on IAM, which sounds scoped until you realize how much surface area it actually covers. Walked out feeling like I'd covered maybe 60% of what they wanted.
  • Design a full Identity and Access Management system covering authentication, authorization, multi-tenancy, token lifecycle, audit logging, scalability, and high availability.

“This question is basically five questions duct-taped together.”

Coupang SWE interview hit me with a classic string problem that escalated fast. Started simple enough but the follow-ups pushed pretty deep into hashing territory.
  • Given a string, find the longest substring that appears at least twice (overlapping occurrences are allowed). Return any valid answer, or an empty string if none exists.
  • How would you optimize the brute-force approach for finding duplicate substrings?
  • How do you handle hash collisions in a rolling hash solution?

“I went with the brute force first, nested loops checking every pair of substrings.”

Coupang·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Coupang for a software engineer role, basically one big open-ended question about your proudest project. Felt like a deep dive disguised as an icebreaker.
  • What project are you most proud of? Walk through the problem, your role, the technical and non-technical challenges, the trade-offs you made, how you measured success, and what you'd do differently.

“This question sounds warm and fuzzy until you realize they want everything: the why, the how, the metrics, the regrets.”

Coupang·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Coupang system design round, got asked to build an IAM system from scratch. Pretty broad scope and I wasn't fully prepared for how deep they wanted to go on the authorization side specifically.
  • Design an Identity and Access Management system that supports both human users and machine/service identities, with authentication, authorization, and audit capabilities.
  • How would you handle temporary credentials for service workloads so that long-lived secrets aren't sitting around in config files?
  • Walk through your approach to policy evaluation, specifically how you'd resolve conflicts when a user has multiple roles with overlapping or contradictory permissions.
  • How would you design the auditing layer so that every access decision is logged without creating a bottleneck in the critical path?
  • What are the main scaling challenges for an IAM system and how would you approach them?
  • How would you support multi-tenancy in this system, particularly around isolation between tenants sharing the same infrastructure?

“I started with the data model which felt safe, principals, resources, roles, policies.”

System design round at Coupang for a software engineering role. The prompt was a full PKI design covering CA hierarchies, mTLS, revocation, and key management. Pretty deep for a single session.
  • Design a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for an organization that needs to issue and manage certificates for internal mTLS between services, with optional extensions for user/device certificates and code signing.

“This was a lot to unpack.”

Behavioral round at Coupang for a software engineer role, basically one big deep-dive question about a project you're proud of. They really meant it when they said they'd dig in.
  • Tell me about a project you're proud of. Walk through the problem, your specific role versus the team's, the key decisions and trade-offs you made, the measurable outcome, and what you'd change looking back.

“This sounds like a standard 'tell me about yourself' project question until they start pulling threads.”

Got a coding problem from Coupang that's basically a graph traversal puzzle. Pretty classic BFS/DFS setup but the two-phase approach tripped me up a bit under pressure.
  • Given an n x n binary matrix where 1s represent land and 0s represent water, and exactly two islands exist, find the minimum number of 0s you need to flip to connect the two islands into one.

“The core idea isn't that hard once you see it: BFS/DFS to mark one island, then BFS outward from it counting steps until you hit the second island.”

System design round at Coupang for a software engineer role. The prompt was a video upload system, YouTube-style, and it went pretty deep into chunking, resumable uploads, and the full processing pipeline. Felt like a lot to cover in one session.
  • Design the video upload subsystem for a large-scale video platform. Users upload files ranging from hundreds of MB to tens of GB, often on unstable mobile connections. Walk through your APIs, data model, storage strategy, processing pipeline, and how you'd handle failures.

“This is a beast of a question.”

Coupang software engineer interview with a graph problem that looks straightforward but has a few layers to it. Nothing too wild, but the BFS/multi-source setup tripped me up a bit.
  • Given a binary grid with exactly two 4-directionally connected islands, find the minimum number of water cells you need to flip to land in order to connect the two islands.

“My first instinct was just BFS from one island toward the other, which is mostly right, but I fumbled the setup.”
