Disney·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Disney software engineering interview that was basically a live code review exercise. You get handed some janky React/TypeScript code a junior wrote and have to walk through everything wrong with it, how you'd talk to the dev about it, what you'd refactor, what tests you'd add, and how you'd follow up. Pretty thorough for a single prompt.
  • You're given a working but poorly written React/TypeScript component from a junior engineer. Walk through the issues you'd flag in a code review, prioritized by impact across correctness, security, performance, accessibility, and maintainability.
  • How would you frame your feedback to help the junior engineer actually learn from it, rather than just listing what's wrong?
  • What concrete refactors would you suggest for the component, covering structure, state management, separation of concerns, naming, typing, and error handling?
  • What tests would you add or request for this component, and what specific behaviors should they cover across unit, integration, and end-to-end levels?
  • After the review is done, how do you follow up with the junior engineer to make sure the feedback sticks and similar issues don't keep showing up?

“This is where I spent the most time and honestly probably over-indexed on maintainability stuff early on when I should've led with correctness and security.”

Disney·Data Scientist·Online Assessment (OA)

Jun 2026
Disney data scientist coding round, three questions back to back. Nothing too wild but the last one tripped me up a bit.
  • Given two 2D integer arrays of the same dimensions, return a new matrix where each element is the sum of the corresponding elements from the two input arrays.
  • Given a list of strings, return a map of each unique string to the number of times it appears in the list.
  • Given an array of integers (possibly with duplicates and negatives), find the length of the longest sequence of consecutive integers that can be formed from the array elements. Aim for O(n) time.

“Straightforward.”

Disney·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Disney ML engineer interview that turned out to have nothing to do with ML. The one question was a geometry/graph logic puzzle dressed up as a coding problem, which I did not see coming.
  • Several points move through 2D space, each chasing a designated target point according to a directed graph structure (cycles and chains both possible). Will all points eventually converge to a single location? If so, when? If not, describe what happens long-term.

“The recruiter called it an ML coding round so I showed up mentally prepped to talk about model training pipelines or loss functions or something.”

Disney·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Disney system design round focused entirely on building a recommendation engine from scratch. It was one of those interviews where the scope keeps expanding and you realize halfway through that you've been talking for 40 minutes and haven't touched half the topics yet.
  • Design a personalized recommendation system for a consumer app. Walk through the full architecture from data ingestion to serving, including candidate generation, ranking, re-ranking, and model feedback loops.
  • How would you handle cold-start for new users and new content in your recommendation system, and what role does exploration play?
  • What offline and online metrics would you use to evaluate the recommendation system, and how would you structure an A/B test with appropriate guardrails?
  • How would you address privacy concerns, bias and fairness issues, and content safety in a recommendation system at scale?

“This one ate the entire session.”

Disney·Product Manager·Hiring Manager Screen

Jun 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Disney, got asked about stakeholder preferences which felt like a weird personality test more than a real product question.
  • What type of stakeholder do you enjoy working with most, and why?

“Blanked for a second because I kept second-guessing whether they wanted a 'correct' answer or an honest one.”

Disney SWE interview that went deep on backend implementation. One big practical question covering Spring MVC, JPA, and SQL aggregation all at once. Felt more like a take-home design discussion than a typical coding round.
  • Build a Spring MVC REST endpoint that returns the most popular course by enrollment count from a pre-populated relational database. Walk through your JPA entity design, repository layer, service layer, aggregation query, tie-breaking logic, error handling, and how you'd test it.

“This was a lot to unpack in one question.”

Did a technical screen for a Software Engineer role at Disney, pretty standard coding interview. One question, classic cache design, but the O(1) constraint is where things get interesting if you haven't thought it through before.
  • Design and implement an LRU cache that supports get and put operations, both in O(1) time.

“I knew LRU caches conceptually but blanked for a second on why a plain hashmap isn't enough.”

Had a technical screen for a Data Engineer role at Disney. The coding problem was a classic recursion/backtracking question on generating balanced parentheses, which felt a bit unexpected for a data engineering position but not the hardest thing in the world.
  • Given an integer n representing the number of parenthesis pairs, write a function that generates all valid, well-formed parentheses combinations using exactly n pairs.

“Classic backtracking problem and I knew it, which helped.”

System design round at Disney for a software engineering role. The whole thing was basically one big question about building a Twitter-style platform from scratch, and it went pretty deep across a lot of areas I wasn't equally prepared for.
  • Design a Twitter-like social platform. Walk through the data model, core user interactions, feed generation, storage strategy, search and trending, and how you'd scale the whole thing to hundreds of millions of users.

“This was a single question that ate the entire session.”

Disney·Data Scientist·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Disney Data Scientist interview with a meaty cross-functional influence question that felt more like a case study than a behavioral. One question, lots of sub-parts, and they clearly wanted specifics about what YOU did versus what the team did.
  • Walk me through a time you had to drive a product decision across multiple teams without any formal authority, under a two-week deadline. The setup: you're a senior analyst on a streaming product, four partner teams can't agree on the success metric or the launch risks. Cover the decision itself, how you set the north-star and guardrail metrics, how you handled conflicting stakeholder incentives, what analyses you chose and why, a specific difficult stakeholder moment, and what the measurable outcome was post-launch.

“This one has so many layers that I kept losing the thread mid-answer.”
