Disney·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Aug 2025
Disney/Hulu data science case interview, basically a full causal inference firefight compressed into one session. No holdout was configured on a 100% rollout, which set the tone for everything that followed. Brutal but fair.
  • Define the primary decision metrics and guardrails for evaluating a homepage ranking model rollout, and set concrete thresholds for each.
  • Without a configured holdout group, how would you use Android users as a difference-in-differences control for the iOS rollout? What assumptions does this require and how do you test them?
  • How would you design a geo-based synthetic control within iOS as an alternative identification strategy, and what diagnostics would you run?
  • The rollout window includes a major content premiere and a payments outage. How do you adjust your analysis to account for these events, and what fixed effects or controls do you include?
  • Quantify the business impact of the observed watch-time decline with confidence intervals, and estimate the weekly revenue effect across both ad and subscription revenue paths.
  • Outline an immediate remediation plan for the rollout and a proper experiment design for the following month, including holdouts, pre-registration, variance reduction, and exposure logging.

“I led with watch-time per session as the north star, which felt right, but I fumbled the guardrails a bit.”

Disney·Product Manager·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Disney, one behavioral question about being surprised on the job. Short and a bit underwhelming as far as interviews go.
  • Tell me about a time you were caught off guard by something unexpected while working as a data product manager.

“I fumbled a bit because my first instinct was to pick a story where I looked good, but that felt off for a question literally asking about being surprised.”

Disney·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Disney and got hit with a product improvement question about NBA League Pass. Pretty focused session, just the one question from what I can tell, but it required some real thinking about sports streaming and what fans actually want.
  • How would you improve the NBA League Pass for basketball fans?

“I went straight to features and kind of skipped the user segmentation piece, which I regretted mid-answer.”

Disney·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Disney ML Engineer interview that was basically a full Jupyter notebook walkthrough, spam classifier from scratch. More hands-on than I expected for a phone screen style round, felt like a mini take-home crammed into a live session.
  • Build a spam vs. not-spam text classifier in a Jupyter notebook using a Naive Bayes model. Walk through the full pipeline from raw text to evaluation.
  • How would you handle class imbalance in a spam detection dataset, and why does it matter for the metrics you choose?
  • Compare Bag-of-Words and TF-IDF vectorization for this kind of task. When would you prefer one over the other?

“This was the whole interview basically.”

Apr 2026
Got a product analytics case for a PM role at Disney, basically just one question about diagnosing a drop in active users on Disney+. Short session, felt more like a screen than a full loop.
  • Active users on Disney+ have dropped by 15% over the past period. How would you diagnose what's going on?

“I went straight to segmentation which felt right in retrospect, but I jumped there too fast without first confirming what 'active user' even meant to them.”

Disney·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round for a software engineer role at Disney, focused pretty heavily on culture fit and how you handle messy situations. Three questions, all in the same vein, no technical stuff at all.
  • Tell me about a time you felt out of sync with your team's culture. How did you figure out what was off, adapt, and try to shift things in a better direction?
  • How do you deal with requirements that keep changing, stakeholders who want different things, and feedback that stings a little?
  • If you and your hiring manager or team lead disagree on a technical or process decision, how do you work through it without creating friction on the team?

“This one tripped me up a bit.”

Disney·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Did a technical phone screen for a software engineer role at Disney. It was a straightforward grid traversal problem but they wanted the full treatment: algorithm choice, complexity analysis, and edge cases. Nothing too wild but I definitely fumbled parts of the discussion.
  • Given a 2D grid of open cells and walls, find the shortest path between a start and target cell using only 4-directional movement. Return the path length or -1 if no path exists. Walk through your algorithm, its time and space complexity, and any edge cases you'd handle.

“BFS was the obvious call and I got there fast, but then they started asking about complexity and I got a little loose with my explanation.”

Disney·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Disney data engineer system design round, pretty intense. The whole thing was centered on a single large-scale clickstream pipeline problem and they kept drilling into the hard parts: late data, deduplication, and keeping dashboards fresh under load spikes.
  • Design an end-to-end pipeline to ingest, process, and serve roughly one billion clickstream events per day, with near-real-time dashboards and accurate daily aggregates for finance. Walk through ingestion, stream/batch processing, storage, and how aggregates are computed and served.
  • How do you detect that your pipeline is falling behind the incoming event rate, and what mechanisms keep it caught up during traffic spikes?
  • A user's device goes offline and syncs hours or even days later. How do you keep daily aggregates accurate when events arrive well after the period they belong to?
  • Network retries mean the same event can arrive multiple times. How do you guarantee each event is counted exactly once in your metrics?
  • Your streaming path produced a DAU number at 11:59pm, then at 3am a batch of device events from the previous day arrives. Walk through exactly how the day's DAU gets corrected and how downstream consumers learn the number changed.
  • Compare exactly-once semantics in Flink versus Spark Structured Streaming. When would you pick each, and where can each still produce duplicates even with those guarantees in place?
  • One partition is getting hammered by a hot key, causing lag on just that partition. How do you detect and fix it without repartitioning the whole topic?
  • The business now wants accurate unique user counts like DAU and MAU across very high cardinality at low cost and low latency. How does that change your aggregation approach, and what accuracy trade-off are you accepting?

“This was the main question and it ate up most of the session.”

Disney·Software Engineer·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Product design interview at Disney, one question about redesigning a competitor's landing page to drive free trial conversions. Pretty lean on details but the prompt itself was meaty enough to chew on for a while.
  • How would you redesign Crunchyroll's landing page to increase free trial sign-ups?

“I went straight to user psychology around commitment anxiety and started sketching out a value-first layout: lead with content previews, bury the credit card ask, surface social proof early.”

Disney·Product Manager·Hiring Manager Screen

May 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Disney, just the one question about acquisition marketing. Short and a bit vague, not much to go on.
  • What do you see as the biggest opportunities or challenges in acquisition marketing right now?

“I fumbled this a bit because I wasn't sure how narrow to go.”
