DoorDash·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

Apr 2026
Behavioral round with the hiring manager at DoorDash for a software engineer role. Rapid-fire format, six or seven questions back to back, with a clear emphasis on keeping stories concise and landing on concrete results.
  • What project are you most proud of? Walk me through the goal, what you personally contributed, the technical complexity involved, and the impact it had.
  • Tell me about a time you had a disagreement with a colleague. What was the conflict about, how did you handle it, and what happened afterward?

“This one sounds easy until you're actually in it and realize your story is sprawling all over the place.”

DoorDash·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Interviewed for a bizops role at DoorDash and got hit with a strategy question that felt broad enough to swallow you whole if you weren't ready for it.
  • Walk me through a time you built and launched a strategy from the ground up, starting from the initial idea.

“I had an answer but it felt too polished in a bad way, like I was reciting a case study rather than actually telling a story.”

DoorDash·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
DoorDash system design round, one big open-ended question about building an aggregator API on top of three downstream services. Felt like a reasonable problem but the scope kept expanding once I thought I had a handle on it.
  • Design and implement an aggregated API endpoint that calls three downstream services, pulls the relevant fields from each, and merges everything into a single unified response. Define the response schema, the downstream interfaces, and the orchestration logic including parallel calls and error handling. Then discuss what you'd add to make it production-ready.

“I started with the happy path, which in hindsight was the wrong move.”

DoorDash·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
PM interview at DoorDash with a product design question about rethinking an existing social feature. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • How would you redesign Instagram's DM feature?

“I went straight to listing pain points, which in retrospect was the wrong move.”

DoorDash·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Interviewed for a bizops role at DoorDash. One behavioral question about being wrong on a hypothesis. Short and a bit uncomfortable if you haven't thought through a real example beforehand.
  • Tell me about a time you had a hypothesis that turned out to be wrong.

“I had an example ready but it was pretty surface level.”

DoorDash·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
DoorDash backend interview that went deep into distributed systems. Started with a buggy round-robin implementation and ended up spending most of the session on consistent hashing, which I was not fully prepared for.
  • You're given a buggy round-robin request distributor. Find the bugs and fix them, then replace the round-robin logic with consistent hashing using a hash ring and virtual nodes.
  • How do you decide how many virtual nodes to assign per server, and what are the tradeoffs?
  • What happens to key-to-server assignments when a server is added or removed from the ring?
  • How would you handle failure recovery if a server in the ring goes down unexpectedly?
  • What hash function would you choose for the ring and why?

“The bug-finding part was fine, took maybe five minutes.”

DoorDash·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
DoorDash ML engineer system design round focused entirely on building a personalized restaurant recommendation system. Pretty deep dive, covering everything from query parsing to LLM integration, which I wasn't fully expecting.
  • Design a personalized restaurant recommendation system where a user enters a query and gets back ranked restaurant results. Walk through query understanding, retrieval, and ranking.
  • What real-time signals would you incorporate into the ranking model, and how would you handle serving them at low latency?
  • How would you handle cold-start for new restaurants or new users with no historical data?
  • How would you incorporate an LLM into this recommendation system? Think about query reformulation, generating explanations, end-to-end ranking, or RAG over reviews and menus.

“This is the kind of question that feels manageable until you're 10 minutes in and realize you've been talking about tokenization for way too long.”

Apr 2026
DoorDash virtual onsite that crammed system design and a coding problem into the same session. The design scope was massive and I definitely felt the time pressure.
  • Design a food delivery platform end-to-end, covering restaurant discovery and search, order placement, courier dispatch with geospatial matching, payment processing, and real-time order tracking.

“The scope here is brutal.”

DoorDash·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round at DoorDash for an Analytics Engineer role, basically one big conflict question that took up most of the time.
  • Tell me about a significant conflict you had at work with a peer, manager, or cross-functional partner. Walk through the situation, the different perspectives involved, how you handled the disagreement, what you did to resolve it, and what came out of it. What did you take away from it?

“I had a real story ready but I think I spent too long on the setup and rushed the resolution part, which is probably the piece they actually care about.”

DoorDash·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Interviewed at DoorDash for a SWE role and got asked about RxJava. Pretty light on details but it was clearly a technical screen.
  • Walk me through your experience with RxJava.

“Broad open-ended question and I kind of rambled.”
