GEICO·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Had a technical phone screen for a software engineer role at Geico. One coding question, greedy approach, not too bad once you see the pattern.
  • Given a string of houses ('H') and empty spaces ('.'), find the minimum number of food buckets to place in empty positions so every house has at least one adjacent bucket. Return -1 if it's not possible.

“Took me a minute to realize you should always try to place the bucket to the right of a house first, not the left.”

GEICO·AI Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round for an AI Engineer role at Geico. Pretty standard stuff, conflict and feedback questions, nothing that felt tailored to the AI side of the job at all.
  • Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a teammate or colleague. How did you handle it?
  • Describe a situation where you had to give or receive constructive feedback. What happened?

“Went with a situation-action-result structure, talked through a disagreement over technical direction with a peer.”

GEICO·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Had a technical phone screen for a Software Engineer role at Geico. One coding problem, tree-related, and it was trickier than it looked on the surface.
  • Given the root of a binary tree, return its boundary nodes in anti-clockwise order starting from the root. The boundary includes the root, the left boundary (top to bottom, no leaves), all leaf nodes (left to right), and the right boundary (bottom to top, no leaves), with no duplicates.

“I thought I had it after reading the problem.”

GEICO·AI Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jun 2026
Coding round for an AI Engineer role at Geico. Just one problem, matrix multiplication with sparse inputs, pretty standard if you've seen it before.
  • Implement a function to multiply two sparse matrices efficiently.

“Classic sparse matrix problem.”

Two coding rounds at Geico for a software engineer role. Pretty standard stuff, LRU Cache came up and that was the main thing worth mentioning.
  • Implement an LRU Cache with get and put operations in O(1) time.

“Classic problem but I still fumbled the eviction logic for a second.”

GEICO·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Geico for a software engineer role. Just one question but they really dug into it, wanted specifics not just a story.
  • Tell me about the most impactful project you've worked on. Walk through the overall scope and goals, then get specific about what you personally owned, what decisions you drove, the measurable impact, and how your contribution was different from your teammates'.

“This question sounds straightforward until they start peeling it back.”

GEICO·AI Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Interviewed for an AI Engineer role at Geico and got a coding round that wasn't really coding at all. It was more of a system design exercise around building a basic RAG pipeline from scratch, covering everything from embeddings to evaluation.
  • Design and implement a basic RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) framework given a set of documents. Walk through your approach including embeddings, indexing, retrieval, prompting, and evaluation.

“I went in expecting a leetcode-style session and got hit with a full system design question instead.”

GEICO·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Geico SWE interview that was basically a deep dive into one string manipulation problem. They wanted more than just a working solution, they pushed on the reasoning behind the approach and the complexity tradeoffs, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Given a string of digits, construct the largest possible palindromic number using some or all of those digits. The result cannot have leading zeros unless it's just '0' itself.

“Started with brute force because I figured they'd want to see my thinking.”

GEICO·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Geico software engineer interview focused on a high write-throughput system design problem. Pretty lean on details but the core challenge was real enough to keep me busy for a while.
  • Design a system that can handle extremely high write throughput at scale.

“Jumped straight into queuing and async writes, which felt right, but I spent too long on the ingestion layer and barely touched replication strategy before time ran out.”

GEICO·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round at Geico for a software engineer role. Just one question but they really dug into it.
  • Tell me about a significant disagreement you had with a teammate, manager, or stakeholder. What was it about, how did you handle it, what trade-offs did you consider, and what was the result? Looking back, what would you change?

“This one has a lot of moving parts and I kind of underestimated that going in.”
