Google·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Google system design round for a software engineer role. The whole session was basically one long deep-dive on streaming medians at scale, and it went places I did not expect.
  • The classic two-heap approach for streaming medians runs out of memory on a very large or unbounded stream. Walk through where the bottlenecks are and how you'd redesign the system to keep producing medians, either exact or approximate, under tight memory constraints.

“I started confidently with the two-heap setup and then kind of froze when they said 'now assume memory is the constraint.' My first instinct was to throw a quantile sketch at it and call it a day, but they pushed back immediately on accuracy guarantees.”

Interviewed at Google for what seemed like a general software or technical role. Just one question from what I can tell, the classic 'explain it to a non-technical person' type.
  • How would you explain cloud computing to your grandmother?

“I fumbled this more than I expected.”

Google·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Google PM interview, product sense round. One question, pretty focused, but it cut right to the core of what makes AI products hard to get right.
  • Users are saying Gemini gives confident but incorrect answers. How would you approach fixing this?

“I started with metrics, which felt right but also kind of obvious.”

Google·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Product strategy question for a PM role at Google, just the one question about growing a competitor product by 10x. Short but the kind of thing that trips you up if you haven't thought about it before.
  • How would you grow Microsoft Copilot by 10x?

“The competitor angle is what makes this uncomfortable.”

Google·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Google PM interview with a meaty product design question about content moderation at scale, with a twist: the system has to be open-source and run by a decentralized community. Unusual prompt, not your typical metrics or roadmap question.
  • How would you design an open-source content management filtering system governed by a decentralized community?

“I spent the first minute just trying to figure out what they actually wanted.”

Google·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

May 2026
Interviewed at Google and got hit with a brand preference question, which felt a bit out of left field for a tech company.
  • What is your favorite brand and why?

“Blanked for a second because I wasn't expecting something this open-ended from Google.”

Google·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Google PM interview, one product design question about building a doctor-finding app. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully ready for.
  • Design an application to help people find doctors.

“I went straight to features and kind of skipped the whole 'who is this for' part, which I regretted mid-answer.”

Google·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Google SWE coding round with a grid/graph problem that looked straightforward until it wasn't. The Union-Find angle wasn't where my head went first and I spent a while fumbling before things clicked.
  • Given a binary matrix of land and water cells, and a query point guaranteed to be on land, count the number of lakes within the island containing that point. A lake is a connected water region (4-directional) that is fully enclosed by the island and has no connection to the border of the matrix.

“My first instinct was BFS from the query cell to find the island, then BFS again on each adjacent water region and check if any of them touch the border.”

Google·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Google Data Scientist technical screen, heavy on R and simulation work. One meaty coding question that took up the whole session and had a lot of moving parts.
  • Using R and dplyr, write a simulation that runs 1,000 iterations with set.seed(2025). In each iteration, randomly select half the rows from a prices table to keep at their original price and increase the other half by 10%. Then left join to a catalog table and compute the overall mean price plus mean price broken down by category. Return a data frame with one row per simulation, and also report the empirical mean and SD across all simulations for each statistic. You must use dplyr verbs like slice_sample, mutate, case_when, left_join, group_by, and summarise, no for-loops, and your approach should scale safely to a million items.

“This one wrecked me a little.”

Google·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Got a product strategy question at Google that sounds deceptively simple but opens up into a pretty deep rabbit hole once you start thinking through it.
  • A previously unknown indigenous language has just been discovered. How would you bring it onto the internet?

“I went straight to digitization and search indexing and the interviewer just kind of waited.”
