Google SWE coding question about maximizing coins eaten from an array, where each move lets you pick three coins. Pretty clean problem on paper but the edge cases in the examples took me a bit to work through.
  • Given an array of coin counts, you can select three coins per move. What is the maximum number of coins you can eat?

“Spent too long staring at the examples trying to reverse-engineer the rule before actually thinking about it from first principles.”

Google SWE coding round with a string decompression problem involving nested parentheses and repetition counts. The problem looked manageable at first glance but the nesting made it trickier than expected.
  • Implement a string decompression function that handles nested parentheses with repetition counts in braces, e.g. 'a(b(c){2}){3}d' should return 'abccbccbccd'.

“My first instinct was recursion and it mostly worked, but I fumbled on parsing the number inside the braces when it had two digits.”

Got a product estimation question at Google that sounds breezy until you actually have to structure it on the spot. One question, pretty classic format, nothing too wild but it requires you to have a real opinion and back it with numbers.
  • What is your favorite international airport, and estimate its daily arrivals and departures?

“The 'favorite' part threw me off more than the estimation.”

Google product interview, one question about taking a US product global. Not a lot of context in what I have to share but it's a solid question worth thinking through if you're prepping.
  • How would you approach internationalizing a product that's already successful in the US?

“This one has more layers than it looks.”

Google coding round for a software engineer role. The question itself wasn't the hard part, explaining what Huffman encoding even is ate up most of the session, so actual coding time was pretty compressed.
  • Given a set of character frequencies, build a Huffman tree.

“Lost a ton of time just getting on the same page about what Huffman encoding is and how the tree should be structured.”

Google PM interview with a classic estimation question. Pretty short session, just one question but it took up the whole time.
  • How many pieces of candy are distributed in your city on a given Halloween?

“I froze for a second because I wasn't sure whether to anchor on households or population.”

Interviewed at Google for a software engineering role, got a pretty straightforward array manipulation problem. Nothing crazy but I second-guessed myself more than I should have.
  • Given an array containing zeros and non-zero elements, sort it such that all zeros are moved to one end.

“I went straight for a two-pointer approach and it worked fine, but I spent like two minutes narrating my thought process before writing a single line of code and I could tell the interviewer was just waiting for me to start.”

Got asked one reliability/hardware question at Google, pretty short screen from what I can tell.
  • What does MTBF mean and why is it important?

“Knew the acronym (Mean Time Between Failures) but fumbled a bit explaining why it actually matters in practice.”

Google SWE interview with a pretty gnarly string problem that mixed combinatorics with dictionary lookups. The question had a lot of moving parts and I'm still not sure I nailed the complexity analysis.
  • Given a string and a dictionary of valid English words, return true if every subsequence of length 3 or more can be rearranged into some valid English word. Walk through your approach, including how you'd enumerate subsequences and check anagram validity, and analyze the time and space complexity.

“The anagram check part felt manageable since character frequency maps are pretty standard.”

Google data scientist interview with two fairly meaty analytical questions back to back. One on A/B test confidence levels and one on forecasting video views. No behavioral stuff, just pure DS problem solving.
  • How would you decide between using a 95% versus 99% confidence level for an A/B test?
  • Walk me through how you would forecast the number of views a video will receive.

“I started talking about Type I error rate and the interviewer immediately pushed on Type II error and sample size implications, which I hadn't fully connected yet in my head.”
