Mercor·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Mercor infrastructure engineer interview, one big system design question that basically ate the whole session. They wanted the full browser-to-server-to-browser story and weren't satisfied with surface-level answers.
  • Walk through everything that happens, end to end, when you type amazon.com into a browser and hit Enter. Cover DNS resolution, TCP and TLS handshakes, HTTP, load balancers, app servers, caching, and how the browser actually renders the page.

“This question sounds broad until you're actually in it and realize they want every layer.”

Interviewed at Mercor for an Infrastructure Engineer role and got hit with a pretty deep streaming systems question. Not a casual chat, they clearly wanted someone who'd actually worked with this stuff at scale.
  • Compare major stream processing frameworks like Kafka Streams, Apache Flink, Spark Structured Streaming, and Apache Beam. What are the key differences and when would you pick one over another?
  • Explain at-most-once, at-least-once, and exactly-once delivery semantics. How is each one actually implemented, and what are the trade-offs in terms of latency, throughput, and system complexity?

“I had opinions on Flink vs Spark but fumbled when they pushed on Beam's portability model.”

Apr 2026
Mercor infrastructure engineer interview that leaned way harder into cryptography fundamentals than I expected for the role. One question, pretty deep, and I was not fully prepared for how far they wanted to go with it.
  • What is a one-way function in cryptography, and how is it used in practice?

“They did not stop at the definition.”

Mercor software engineer interview that got into cryptography fundamentals, specifically one-way functions. Not what I expected from a SWE screen but here we are.
  • What is a one-way function in cryptography? Give a precise definition and describe where it actually shows up in real systems like password storage, digital signatures, or integrity checks.

“I knew the gist but stumbled on the 'precise' part.”

Mercor·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Mercor ML Engineer interview that was basically one big system design question about building an LLM eval harness from scratch. No behavioral stuff, just a deep technical dive into architecture and reliability. Pretty interesting problem but a lot to cover in one session.
  • Design and implement a lightweight evaluation harness for a language model running locally via Ollama. Walk through the system design, major components, data flow, and how you'd make it reliable and extensible.

“This is a meaty one.”

Interviewed for a software engineering role at Mercor and got hit with some cloud networking fundamentals. Nothing too crazy but the depth they expected on the subnet question was more than I anticipated.
  • What is a VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) and what purpose does it serve?
  • What's the difference between a private and public subnet, and how do resources in a private subnet reach the internet without being directly exposed?

“Felt okay about this one.”

Mercor software engineer interview hit me with a classic data structures problem. Pretty standard coding round, nothing too surprising, but it's the kind of question that trips you up if you haven't thought about the auxiliary structure angle before.
  • Design a stack that supports push, pop, and a min operation, all in O(1) time.

“I knew this one but still fumbled explaining the why behind the auxiliary stack.”

Mercor software engineer interview, one round, basically just the classic 'what happens when you type a URL' question but they wanted the full deep dive across every layer. Not a bad experience, just a lot of ground to cover.
  • Walk me through everything that happens, end-to-end, when a user types a URL like amazon.com into their browser and hits Enter. Cover the browser, DNS, TCP/TLS, HTTP, CDNs, load balancers, server processing, and page rendering.

“I've seen this question before so I wasn't panicking, but the scope they wanted was bigger than I expected.”

Interviewed at Mercor for an Infrastructure Engineer role. The technical portion leaned heavily on Kubernetes internals, specifically around stateful vs stateless workloads. Pretty focused session, not a lot of fluff.
  • Walk me through the differences between a ReplicaSet or Deployment and a StatefulSet in Kubernetes, covering pod identity, storage, ordering behavior, rolling updates, and when you'd actually pick one over the other.

“This is one of those questions that sounds straightforward until you're mid-answer and realize you're conflating things.”

Mercor software engineer interview that went pretty deep into OS fundamentals and then pivoted to Python-specific concurrency. Not a vibe-check round, they actually wanted you to think through the tradeoffs.
  • What is the difference between a process and a thread in Linux?
  • How does Python's concurrency model differ from the standard thread/process model, and when would you choose Python threads versus multiprocessing for performance-sensitive work?

“Covered the basics fine: separate memory space for processes, shared memory within a thread group, context switching costs.”
