Mercor·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Interviewed for an infrastructure role at Mercor and got hit with a pretty deep concurrency question. Not a bad experience, just more Python internals than I expected for an infra position.
  • Walk me through the difference between processes and threads in Python, including how the GIL affects CPU-bound work, when threads are still useful, how multiprocessing handles IPC, and how you'd decide between threading, multiprocessing, asyncio, or external workers.

“This was basically a full concurrency lecture disguised as one question.”

Technical screen for an Infrastructure Engineer role at Mercor. One question, pretty deep on Linux internals. The kind of interview where you realize mid-answer how many edge cases you've never actually thought through carefully.
  • Walk me through the difference between a process and a thread on Linux, covering memory isolation, how the kernel schedules them, file descriptor sharing, signal handling, context switch overhead, and when you'd actually choose one over the other.

“Started okay with address space isolation and task_struct, but when they pushed on clone() flags and exactly how threads share memory vs processes I got a bit fuzzy.”

Mercor SWE interview that got into the weeds on post-training pretty fast. The vibe was clear: if you've actually done it, you can talk about it naturally, and if you haven't, no amount of surface-level knowledge saves you.
  • How do you effectively carry out post-training in practice? Walk through your actual experience with it.

“This is the kind of question where you either have the reps or you don't.”

Mercor·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Technical round at Mercor for an Infrastructure Engineer role. The whole session basically revolved around Kubernetes networking internals, which I thought I knew well enough until they started drilling into the specifics.
  • Walk me through how traffic is routed inside a Kubernetes cluster, from kube-proxy and its iptables or IPVS modes all the way to how a request actually lands on a pod.
  • What are the differences between ClusterIP, NodePort, and LoadBalancer service types, and when would you actually use each one?
  • How does DNS-based service discovery work in Kubernetes? What resolves a service name to a cluster IP?
  • Explain how an Ingress controller like nginx or traefik fits into the traffic path. How does external traffic actually reach a pod end-to-end?

“I started with kube-proxy and iptables rules, explained how rules get programmed per Service, then pivoted to IPVS as the more scalable option for large clusters.”

Concurrency-focused technical screen for a software engineer role at Mercor. Two-part question that started with basic mutex usage and then pushed into more nuanced territory around lock-free patterns and when to actually use them.
  • You have a shared resource being accessed by multiple threads. Write a solution using locks to make the access thread-safe, then walk through your code and explain what each lock is protecting and why it's necessary.
  • How would you improve the concurrency of your solution without breaking correctness? Walk through read/write locks, per-key locking, atomic operations like compare-and-swap, and copy-on-write. Pick one approach and justify when it actually makes sense to use it.

“Pretty standard stuff if you've done any concurrent programming.”

Interviewed for a software engineering role at Mercor and got hit with some streaming/data pipeline fundamentals. Not the hardest interview I've had but the delivery semantics question definitely required more precision than I expected.
  • What are some popular streaming and data processing frameworks you've worked with or know about?
  • Can you explain at-most-once, at-least-once, and exactly-once delivery semantics, including what each guarantees, how you'd implement them, and the trade-offs involved?

“Pretty broad opener.”

Mercor ML engineer interview, no coding at all. It was a technical conversation focused on post-training, data collection, and filtering. Pretty low-key compared to what I expected.
  • How do you decide whether a given dataset is suitable for training a large model? And if you have a noisy dataset, how would you design an ablation study to figure out if that data is actually helping?

“This is really two questions stitched together and I didn't handle the transition cleanly.”

Kubernetes-heavy technical screen for a software engineer role at Mercor. Three questions, all infrastructure focused, no warmup fluff. Left feeling like I should've reviewed stateful workloads more before going in.
  • How does autoscaling work in Kubernetes, both at the pod level and the node level?
  • Walk me through how external traffic gets routed into the correct pods inside a Kubernetes cluster.
  • What are the differences between a ReplicaSet and a StatefulSet, and when would you actually choose one over the other?

“I knew the HPA basics well enough, talked about CPU thresholds and how the metrics server feeds into it.”
