Meta·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Meta ML engineer round, pretty much a single meaty design question about streaming statistics. Felt like a coding question dressed up as a system design one, which threw me a bit.
  • Design a class that tracks a running mean over a stream of numbers with O(1) add and mean operations. Then discuss numerical stability for very long streams and how you'd extend it to a sliding window over the last K elements.

“I jumped straight to the naive sum-divided-by-count approach, which works fine until they asked about numerical stability for huge streams.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Product sense round at Meta for a PM role. One question, CEO strategy framing, deceptively open-ended and I don't think I nailed it.
  • You've just been appointed CEO of Blue Origin. What steps would you take to get the company to break even?

“I went straight into cost-cutting mode and talked about launch cadence and commercial contracts.”

PM interview at Meta with one product strategy question about Capital One Shopping. Short and focused, probably a screen or early round.
  • What is the customer value and business value of Capital One Shopping?

“This one tripped me up a bit because it sounds like a product sense question but it's really asking you to separate two distinct lenses.”

Meta·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Meta DS interview focused entirely on a single massive experimentation design question about launching a new video ad format. The depth they expected was genuinely surprising, covering everything from randomization unit to sequential testing to post-null-result playbooks.
  • Design a full end-to-end A/B test to evaluate a new video ad format against the current one. Walk through exposure definition, randomization unit, primary metric, power calculations, analysis plan, operational risks, and your decision rule.
  • If the primary metric shows no improvement, what do you do next and in what order?

“This question is basically six questions stapled together and they want all of it.”

Meta SWE interview where I had to take a suboptimal solution I'd already proposed and figure out how to fix it on the fly, covering edge cases and cleaning up the implementation under time pressure. Not a great feeling.
  • You've proposed a suboptimal solution to an algorithm problem. Given time constraints, how would you optimize it to handle all edge cases and improve the implementation? Assume input size is around 10,000 elements.

“The rough part wasn't identifying that my solution was slow, it was having to articulate the fix out loud while also patching the code in real time.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Meta PM interview with a single product design question focused on feedback tooling. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a product that collects user feedback across multiple different products or services.

“I went broad too fast.”

PM interview at Meta focused on Reels specifically, two product sense questions back to back. Pretty clean loop, no behavioral fluff, just metrics and strategy.
  • How would you define success for Instagram Reels, and what metrics would you use to measure it?
  • If Reels engagement is increasing but Feed engagement is declining, how do you respond?

“I went with a mix of consumption metrics and creator-side health, things like watch time, completion rate, shares, and whether the creator base was growing.”

May 2026
Meta product analytics question about diagnosing a sudden drop in photo sharing usage. Pretty standard metric investigation setup but the scope of it caught me more off guard than I expected.
  • Photo sharing on the platform has seen an abrupt drop in usage. How would you troubleshoot this?

“I started with the obvious stuff: is this a data pipeline issue or a real product signal?”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral screen at Meta, just the one question about a tough project challenge. Pretty standard stuff, nothing tricky about the setup.
  • Tell me about a time you faced a difficult challenge while working on a project.

“I had a story ready but rambled a bit on the context and ran short on the resolution part.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Meta system design round, got asked to build a post search feature from scratch. Pretty open-ended and I wasn't sure how deep to go on each component, but it was a solid question that covers a lot of ground.
  • Design a post search system for a large social platform where users can search by one or more keywords and get back relevant posts. Posts are being created, updated, and deleted constantly. Cover the API, how you'd index content, how you'd rank results, and how you'd scale the whole thing.

“This one is basically 'build a mini search engine' and I went in thinking I had it covered because I knew about inverted indexes.”
