Meta·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Meta SWE coding round, one problem the whole session. The problem itself was clean but I spent way too long second-guessing my approach before I even wrote a line of code.
  • Given an array of lowercase strings, find the maximum length of a concatenation of a subset of those strings such that every character in the result is unique across the whole concatenation.

“My first instinct was brute force all subsets, which is fine given the constraint of at most 16 words, but I wasted time trying to be clever about pruning before I'd even confirmed the basic approach worked.”

Meta data engineer technical screen, one coding question the whole time. Pretty focused on graph traversal which I wasn't expecting for a DE role, but it wasn't impossible.
  • Given a directed 'follows' graph represented as a Python dict mapping users to lists of users they follow, implement a function that returns two-hop recommendations for a given user. These are accounts followed by the user's followees that the user doesn't already follow, excluding the user themselves. If returning a list, sort by descending frequency then lexicographically.

“The base case clicked pretty fast: loop over followees, then loop over who they follow, filter out anyone the user already follows and the user themselves, deduplicate.”

Meta data engineer technical screen on CoderPad, SQL only. They dropped a broken query in front of me and told me it was AI-generated, which I thought was a funny way to frame it. The whole thing was about finding and fixing the bugs while talking through my reasoning.
  • You're given a SQL query with at least four intentional errors covering syntax mistakes, wrong join types, redundant joins, fan-out issues, and missing or hallucinated columns. Find and fix all of them, explaining your reasoning for each change as you go.

“Running it first before reading it carefully was probably the wrong call.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Meta product sense interview, one question about Facebook Dating and whether you'd ship an algorithm change. Pretty focused session, no fluff.
  • The engineering team has built an algorithm update that's projected to increase Facebook Dating matches by 10%. Would you launch it?

“My first instinct was to just say yes, 10% lift sounds good, ship it.”

Meta software engineer interview, coding round. The content was pretty thin, just a reference to a LeetCode-style problem on transactions, so not much to go on.
  • Solve a coding problem related to transactions, similar to a well-known LeetCode problem on the topic.

“The original post was vague, just a pinyin-obfuscated reference to a LeetCode transactions problem with no detail on the actual prompt or constraints.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Meta SWE coding round, one problem the whole time. They took a classic BFS maze question and kept layering on requirements until it was basically a full state-space search problem. Not the hardest thing I've done but the extension caught me a bit flat-footed.
  • You have a BFS-based maze solver for a grid with walls, open cells, a start, and an end. Now add keys and doors: keys have identities (like 'a', 'b', etc.), doors block movement unless the agent already holds the matching key. Modify the BFS to handle this, and discuss the resulting complexity.

“I got the basic BFS part out fast, that wasn't the issue.”

Meta SWE coding round, one question the whole time. Sliding window on non-negative integers, seemed straightforward but the constraints are wide enough that you have to actually think about the approach.
  • Given an array of non-negative integers and a target value, determine whether any contiguous subarray sums to exactly that target. Return true or false.

“My first instinct was prefix sums with a hash set, which works when you have negative numbers in the mix.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Prepping for a Meta software engineer behavioral loop, which covers conflict, a project you're proud of, self-reflection, and mentoring. Pretty standard senior-level stuff but the follow-up questions are where it gets real.
  • Tell me about a significant conflict or disagreement you had with a peer, stakeholder, or teammate. How did it start, what did you do, and what happened?
  • Describe a project you're particularly proud of. What problem did it solve, what was your role, and what was the impact?
  • How do you think about yourself as an engineer or leader? What are your real strengths and where do you still need to grow?
  • Give me an example of how you helped a teammate grow, whether through coaching, feedback, mentoring, or giving them more ownership.

“The tricky part isn't telling the story, it's making sure both sides sound reasonable.”

Meta·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Meta data scientist interview with a pretty focused stats question around ad measurement. One question but it had a lot of layers, and the Bayesian twist at the end is where things got interesting.
  • You have conversion counts and exposure numbers for a test group (saw the ad) and a control group (didn't). How do you estimate lift and test whether it's statistically significant? How would you calculate the sample size needed to detect a 5% lift at 90% power? And if a stakeholder asks for a Bayesian framing instead, how do you reframe the whole thing?

“Three questions bundled into one, which I didn't fully appreciate until I was halfway through the frequentist part and they asked about sample size.”

Meta·Technical Program Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Product strategy question for a TPM role at Meta. Just the one question, no frills, no context about how it went.
  • Should Meta enter the movie ticket sales space to take advantage of its large user base?

“This kind of question is tricky because the obvious answer feels like yes (big audience, social graph, events already exist on the platform) but you have to actually stress-test the business case.”
