Meta·Data Scientist·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at Meta for a Data Scientist role, two questions focused on going beyond your job description and handling team conflict. Pretty standard stuff but the follow-ups pushed harder than I expected.
  • Can you describe a time you took on responsibilities that were outside your official role? What made you step in and what came of it?
  • Tell me about a conflict you had to work through with your team. How did you handle it and what was the result?

“I had a decent story ready but fumbled the impact part.”

Meta SWE coding round, just the one tree problem. Pretty standard stuff but it's the kind of question where you can embarrass yourself if you haven't thought about it carefully before.
  • Given the root of a binary tree, find the length of the longest path between any two nodes in the tree, measured by the number of edges.

“The tricky part is that the longest path doesn't have to go through the root, which is easy to forget under pressure.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

Jun 2026
Meta SWE CodeSignal OA, 90 minutes, progressive OOD format building a banking system across four levels. The bar is basically full AC or bust, which I found out the hard way reading other people's outcomes after the fact.
  • Implement the core banking operations: create an account, deposit funds, and transfer between accounts, each returning appropriate values or None on failure.
  • Implement a top_spenders query that returns the top N accounts ranked by total outgoing transfer volume, with ties broken alphabetically by account ID.
  • Add scheduled payment functionality: schedule a payment to execute after a given delay and allow cancellation by payment ID.
  • Implement account merging and historical balance queries: merge two accounts (combining balances, outgoing totals, and scheduled payments), then support querying what an account's balance was at a specific past timestamp.

“This is the foundation everything else builds on so you really cannot rush it.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
Meta PM interview with one of those open-ended product design questions that sounds philosophical but is really testing whether you can ground fuzzy goals in real metrics. No outcome info shared.
  • You're tasked with building a national park system for a brand new country. How do you define and measure success?

“I went straight to visitor numbers and kind of regretted it.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jun 2026
Meta SWE coding round with a 2D prefix sum problem. The question was well-scoped but they pushed hard on complexity analysis and edge cases, which is where things got interesting.
  • Given an immutable binary matrix, design a data structure that preprocesses it so that any subsequent query asking for the count of 1s in a given sub-rectangle can be answered as fast as possible. Explain your preprocessing and query complexity, implement the interface, and provide at least 5 test cases including edge cases.

“The core idea is a 2D prefix sum table built once at construction time, O(R*C), and then each query runs in O(1) using inclusion-exclusion on the four corners.”

Meta coding round, sliding window problem. Pretty standard stuff if you've seen it before, brutal if you haven't.
  • Given an integer array and a window size k, return the maximum value in each contiguous subarray of size k as the window moves from left to right.

“Knew the brute force immediately but sat there second-guessing whether to just code it up or explain the optimal path first.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jun 2026
Coding round for a Research Scientist role at Meta. Just one algorithmic problem but it had enough moving parts to keep me busy.
  • Given an array of strings and a target string called accesscode, count all pairs (i, j) such that concatenating the string at index i with the string at index j produces the accesscode.

“The naive approach is obviously too slow so you need to count occurrences of each string first, then walk through every possible split of accesscode and multiply the prefix count by the suffix count.”

Meta SWE coding round with a bracket matching problem. Pretty standard stuff but worth knowing cold if you're prepping for this loop.
  • Given a string that may contain brackets of three types, [], {}, and (), write a function to determine whether the bracket usage in the string is valid. An empty string counts as valid, and brackets must be closed in the correct order and matching type.

“Stack-based solution, pretty much what you'd expect.”

Meta·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Technical phone screen for a Data Scientist role at Meta. Two algorithmic problems back to back, both with a competitive programming flavor that felt a bit out of left field for a DS interview. Not a vibe check round at all.
  • You have two arrays representing outbound and return ticket prices indexed by day. Design an algorithm to find the minimum total cost of a round trip where the departure day comes before the return day. Analyze time and space complexity and walk through any optimizations.
  • Given an integer k, generate all k-digit numbers that look identical after a 180-degree rotation. Explain your algorithm, its complexity, and how you handle edge cases.

“My first instinct was brute force, nested loops, O(n²), and I actually said that out loud which I think was fine.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Meta system design round focused on probabilistic data structures, specifically a weighted random picker. The depth of follow-ups surprised me, went way beyond just slapping a prefix sum together.
  • Design a WeightedPicker class that takes an array of positive integer weights and supports a pick() method returning an index proportional to its weight. Optimize for up to 10 million picks after preprocessing up to 100k weights. Walk through your preprocessing choices, random number generation, numerical stability concerns, and time/space complexity.
  • Extend your WeightedPicker to support addWeight(i, delta) for updating a weight at a given index. Both updates and picks should run in sublinear time. What data structure and approach would you use?

“I went straight for prefix sums and binary search, which is fine, but they pushed on why not the alias method.”
