Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Interviewed at Meta for a product role and got hit with a classic operations-meets-product question about campus shuttle logistics. Not a lot of context in the original post but the question itself is pretty meaty if you actually dig into it.
  • How would you decide whether to run shuttles at Facebook's Menlo Park campus on a fixed schedule versus on-demand?

“I actually liked this question more than I expected to.”

Meta data engineer interview with a tree validation problem. Pretty standard technical screen, nothing too wild, but it's one of those questions that looks easy until you start coding it up.
  • Given a binary tree, write code to determine whether it is a valid binary search tree.

“I went straight for the naive approach, checking left child less than root and right child greater than root at each node.”

Meta SWE interview focused on a grid traversal problem that looked straightforward until the follow-ups started piling up. The whole session felt like one question that kept branching into five more.
  • Given an m by n grid of integers, find the length of the longest path where each consecutive step moves to an adjacent cell (up, down, left, or right) with a strictly larger value. Return the maximum over all possible starting cells.
  • Walk through the time and space complexity of your memoized DFS solution for the longest increasing path problem.
  • How would you handle this problem on very large grids where recursion depth could become a bottleneck or hit stack limits?
  • What changes if the path condition is non-decreasing instead of strictly increasing? What about allowing diagonal moves?

“I started with brute-force DFS and they let me talk through it before asking about complexity.”

PM product sense question for a Meta role, just the one scenario about Spotify and live streaming for artists. Pretty open-ended, no right answer, but I definitely felt like I was winging parts of it.
  • You're a PM at Spotify thinking about building a live streaming feature for artists. How do you decide whether to invest in it?

“I started with user value which felt right but I spent too long on it and rushed the business case at the end.”

Two coding problems back to back for a Meta SWE round. Both were leetcode-style, one tree problem and one string parsing problem. Nothing too crazy but the combo tests breadth pretty well.
  • Given the root of a binary tree, return its vertical order traversal where nodes are grouped by horizontal column index (root at 0, left child at -1, right child at +1), ordered top-to-bottom and left-to-right within each column.
  • Evaluate a string arithmetic expression containing non-negative integers and the operators +, -, *, / with no parentheses. Integer division should truncate toward zero and operator precedence must be respected.

“BFS with a column tracker is the move here.”

Meta coding screen for a software engineer role. One graph problem, pretty standard if you've seen it before, but the kind of thing that trips you up if you haven't thought about cycle detection in a while.
  • Given a number of courses and a list of prerequisite pairs, determine whether it's possible to complete all courses without a circular dependency.

“Classic graph problem.”

Meta DS interview focused entirely on a machine learning system design problem around ranking shop ads in a marketplace app. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for. The question sprawled across modeling, evaluation, and failure modes all at once.
  • Design an end-to-end ML system for ranking and recommending shop ads in a marketplace app. Walk through prediction targets, training labels, features, model choice, evaluation strategy, and at least three failure modes.
  • How would you handle position bias in your training data, and what are the risks if you ignore it?
  • What features would you use for this ranking problem, and how do you handle cold start for new shops with no historical data?
  • How would you evaluate this system offline and online, and what guardrails would you put in place during an A/B test?

“This was basically the whole interview crammed into one prompt.”

Probability and Bayes question for a Meta data scientist role. Two parts, straightforward setup but the conditional probability follow-up is where things get interesting.
  • Two rooms have the following occupancy priors: probability 1/3 both are occupied, probability 1/3 exactly one is occupied, probability 1/3 both are empty. You pick a room uniformly at random to check. What is the probability the room you check is occupied?
  • Given that the room you picked is occupied, what is the probability the other room is also occupied? Walk through the Bayes calculation explicitly.

“Part (a) is just total probability.”

Meta SWE coding screen with a drone delivery distance problem. Pretty niche problem, not your typical graph traversal or DP question, which threw me off a bit.
  • Given a target distance and a list of station positions, calculate the minimum distance a person has to walk while carrying cargo. At each station a drone can be used to fly cargo up to 10 units. If the drone falls short of the target, the person walks empty-handed to retrieve the cargo and repeats the process.

“Took me a while to even model what was being asked.”

Meta coding screen, probably mid-level, sliding window type problem with a twist. Not the hardest thing I've seen from them but the edge cases will get you if you're not careful.
  • Given an integer array, find the length of the longest contiguous subarray that is strictly increasing, except you're allowed one position where the value drops. One break in the strictly-increasing rule is okay, but only one.

“My first instinct was two pointers and I started coding before really thinking through what happens when the drop occurs mid-window.”
