Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Meta for a SWE role, just one question but it required some genuine reflection on past project work.
  • If you could go back and change one thing about a past project, what would it be and why?

“I went with a safe answer about wanting better upfront alignment on requirements, which felt a bit generic the moment it left my mouth.”

Remote ML Engineer interview at Meta where I got so locked into coding that I skipped testing my own solution, only to realize after hanging up that there was a bug sitting right in the middle of it.
  • You skipped a dry run during a remote coding interview and found a bug in your solution afterward. How would you have caught it earlier, how do you handle communication with the interviewer in the moment and after, and what do you actually change going forward?

“The bug was embarrassingly catchable.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Meta PM interview, one case question about Facebook Reactions where you're handed a mixed-signal metrics scenario and have to figure out what to do. Pretty classic product analytics setup but the specifics made it trickier than expected.
  • You're the PM for Facebook Reactions. Reactions are up 20% but comments are down 10%. What do you do?

“My first instinct was to say reactions are cannibalizing comments and just run with that.”

Meta SWE coding round, one question the whole time. Pretty standard graph traversal but with a twist that tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Given an n x n binary grid where 0 is open and 1 is blocked, find the shortest path from the top-left to the bottom-right cell using 8-directional movement. Return the actual list of coordinates on the path, not just the length.

“I knew BFS immediately, got that part out fast.”

Meta SWE coding round, one grid traversal problem the whole session. Pretty standard stuff if you've done BFS before, but there are enough edge cases to trip you up if you're not careful.
  • Given a 2D grid with walls, open cells, a start, and an end, find the shortest path between start and end using 4-directional movement. Return the path length and reconstruct the path if possible.

“BFS is the obvious move here and I got there pretty fast.”

Meta SWE coding round with two problems back to back. Both were more involved than I expected for a single session, and the second one especially had some tricky edge cases I didn't fully think through in time.
  • Design an in-memory time-versioned key-value store that supports set(key, value, timestamp) and get(key, timestamp), where get returns the value at the largest stored timestamp less than or equal to the given timestamp.
  • Given N people's busy schedules as lists of non-overlapping sorted intervals, find all time slots when everyone is free.

“I knew binary search was the move here pretty quickly.”

Meta data engineering interview with a SQL-heavy technical screen. Two questions, both centered on analytics aggregations with a streaming context. Nothing too wild but the second one had a wrinkle I didn't fully see coming.
  • Write a SQL query to compute total watch-time per day from a video streaming dataset.
  • Build a cumulative daily metric in SQL where today's value equals today's figure plus yesterday's, but the two daily tables don't always share the same IDs. How do you handle the mismatched IDs when joining?

“Fairly standard warm-up.”

Meta interview centered around a consecutive logins problem. Not much context to go on but it reads like a coding screen.
  • Given a dataset of user login timestamps, find users who have logged in on consecutive days.

“Classic Meta-style SQL or coding problem depending on how they frame it.”

Meta SWE coding round, one tree problem the whole time. Pretty focused session, they wanted the solution but also wanted me to explain the thinking behind it which I wasn't fully expecting.
  • Given the root of a binary tree, find the diameter, defined as the maximum number of edges on any path between two nodes. Does the path have to go through the root? Walk through your solution and analyze its time and space complexity. Also handle the edge cases for empty trees and single-node trees.

“I knew the general idea going in but the 'does it pass through the root' part tripped me up for a second.”

Meta SWE coding round, one problem the whole time. Pretty standard anagram grouping question but I still managed to second-guess myself halfway through.
  • Given an array of strings, group all anagrams together and return the groups. Two strings are anagrams if they have the same characters at the same frequencies.

“Knew the sorted-key trick going in but still spent like two minutes overthinking whether a hash of character counts would be faster.”
