Microsoft·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

Jun 2026
Interviewed for a PMM role at Microsoft, just one question worth noting from what I remember.
  • Can you walk me through a time you used data to build or improve a solution?

“I went straight to a campaign metric story but partway through realized I wasn't really explaining the solution, just the data.”

Microsoft coding screen, one question, pretty focused on parsing and state machine logic. Not a vibe check at all, they wanted to see if you could think through edge cases in a single pass without reaching for regex.
  • Given a large log string where records are separated by semicolons, parse it into a deduplicated list of email addresses. Records may include display names and parenthesized comments anywhere. You must implement a single-pass state machine that tracks whether you're inside parentheses or quotes before treating a semicolon as a record boundary, then extract the email token by finding the '@' symbol.

“I spent the first few minutes trying to think of a regex approach and the interviewer kind of just waited.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Microsoft software engineer interview that was basically a product strategy exercise disguised as a technical round. You're asked to think like a PM and an engineer at the same time, which I was not fully prepared for.
  • Propose research directions and concrete solution approaches to improve business performance. For each idea, define the problem, target users or segments, key success metrics, required data and instrumentation, experimental design to validate impact, any engineering or ML components, risks, and a phased rollout plan.

“This was a lot to hold in your head at once.”

Microsoft Applied Scientist interview with a classic algorithms question that sounds easy until you actually have to justify your design choices out loud. The interviewer pushed pretty hard on the reasoning behind approach selection, not just the implementation.
  • Given a very large array of N numbers and an integer K where N is much larger than K, find the top K largest elements. Walk through your choice of approach (sorting vs heap), which heap type makes sense in this scenario, and analyze the time and space complexity.

“I jumped straight to 'just sort it' and then caught myself because that's obviously not the move when K is tiny relative to N.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Microsoft SWE interview with a pretty gnarly data structures design question. One round, focused entirely on a custom collection type with some real depth to it once you get past the surface.
  • Design a SnapshotSet<T> that supports add, remove, contains, and iterator operations, where each iterator captures the state of the set at the moment it was created and is completely unaffected by any subsequent modifications to the set. Discuss the space and time trade-offs of your approach.

“I started with the obvious thing: just copy the whole set every time iterator() is called.”

Interviewed for an EM role at Microsoft. Just the one question worth talking about, and it's a classic but still tripped me up a bit.
  • How do you prioritize features for your engineering team?

“I went straight into a framework about impact vs effort and kind of lost the thread halfway through.”

Microsoft·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
Microsoft PM interview with a classic product design question. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a vending machine specifically for use in airports.

“I jumped straight into features without thinking about who actually uses airport vending machines and why.”

Microsoft PM interview, one question deep: design a smartwatch app, but framed as if you're a PM at Uber. Short session, product sense focus.
  • You're a PM at Uber. Design a smartwatch app for the platform.

“The Uber framing threw me a bit.”

Microsoft product design interview, one question about building an AR app for college tours. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design an augmented reality app for college campus tours.

“I jumped straight into features and kind of forgot to ask who the user actually is.”

Microsoft SWE interview, one question about project scheduling. Pretty straightforward behavioral territory but it caught me more off guard than I expected.
  • How do you build and manage a project schedule?

“I fumbled this a bit because I went straight into tools and timelines without talking about how I actually break down work or handle slippage.”
