Microsoft·Software Engineer·Recruiter / HR Screen

Jul 2026
Behavioral screen at Microsoft, just the one question about time management. Pretty low-key.
  • Can you share a time-management skill you've actually applied in your day-to-day work?

“Felt like a warmup but I still fumbled it a bit.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jul 2026
Applied Scientist interview at Microsoft with a meaty system design problem around real-time ML inference. One question, lots of depth required, and I left feeling like I'd only scratched the surface of what they were looking for.
  • Design a low-latency service that ingests a continuous stream of keystroke events (character, timestamp, cursor position) and predicts the user's current intent (e.g., writing a function, searching an API, refactoring code) in order to surface proactive suggestions in real time.

“I started with the streaming pipeline and spent probably too long on the ingestion layer before even touching the model side.”

Microsoft interview that opened with a structured self-intro and then turned into a deep-dive on whatever you just said. If you claimed something, they were coming back for specifics.
  • Walk me through your background, your most recent role, your technical strengths, and a key project you've worked on.

“The tricky part is this isn't just an icebreaker.”

Microsoft·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jul 2026
PM role interview at Microsoft, one question about evaluating a third-party voice assistant integration for a food delivery platform. Pretty open-ended, no real signal on how deep they wanted me to go.
  • You're a PM at a food delivery company. How would you decide whether to integrate your platform with a voice assistant like Amazon Alexa?

“I went straight into user value and kind of forgot to question whether this was even worth building in the first place.”

System design round at Microsoft, one question about fraud detection on a freemium product. Pretty open-ended and I felt like I was talking in circles for a bit before finding a direction.
  • How would you design a system to detect and stop fraudulent users abusing a freemium product like Dropbox?

“I started by trying to define what 'fraud' even means in a freemium context, which took longer than it should have.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jul 2026
Standard behavioral round at Microsoft for a software engineer role. Pretty much what you'd expect: learning habits, a project walkthrough, and some follow-up digging into the hard parts.
  • How do you keep your skills up to date and continue learning new things?
  • Walk me through a project from your resume that you found interesting or impactful.
  • What were the hardest parts of that project and what did you take away from them?

“I rambled a bit here.”

Jul 2026
System design round at Microsoft for a software engineer role. The whole session was basically one big design question about an event booking platform, and they went pretty deep on the tricky parts like inventory consistency and payment reliability.
  • Design a high-level event booking system for things like concerts, sports events, or conferences. Walk through requirements, API, schema, architecture, and key technical challenges.
  • How would you prevent overselling seats when many users try to book the same seat simultaneously?
  • How do you handle payment failures and retries without charging a user twice or creating duplicate bookings?
  • How would you scale the read side of this system to handle traffic spikes during popular event sales?

“I started with functional requirements which felt natural: browse events, check seat availability, hold a seat, pay, get a ticket, cancel.”

Microsoft SWE interview with a classic array merging problem. Pretty standard algorithmic stuff but they pushed on complexity analysis which tripped me up a bit.
  • You're given two sorted arrays. Merge them into one sorted array with no duplicate values. Walk through your approach and analyze the time and space complexity.

“The merge part I had down pretty quickly, two pointers, advance whichever side is smaller, done.”

Interviewed for a security engineer role at Microsoft, got a technical question about Windows event logging that seemed basic but tripped me up more than I expected.
  • What are the standard event log names on Windows machines?

“Knew the big ones off the top of my head, Security, System, Application, but then they just waited and I could tell they wanted more.”

Interviewed at Microsoft, got a project management angle question about timelines shifting. Pretty short session from what I could tell, just the one question worth noting.
  • How do you assess the impact of a changing timeline?

“I went straight to stakeholder communication and risk re-evaluation, which felt right in the moment.”
