Microsoft·Product Manager·Hiring Manager Screen

Apr 2026
Had a Microsoft PM screen that was pretty clearly focused on whether I actually use AI tools in my day-to-day life, not just talk about them. Short but pointed.
  • Have you done any hands-on building with AI tools, or created something outside of work that reflects an AI-first way of thinking about products?
  • Can you walk me through a demo of something you built?

“This one stung a little because I had done some tinkering but nothing I could cleanly articulate as a product.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Microsoft for a software engineer role, focused entirely on designing a large-scale messaging system. The depth they wanted on cross-region consistency was more than I expected for a single session.
  • Design a messenger application that supports both 1:1 and group chat at massive scale.
  • How would you handle message ordering and consistency when users in different geographic regions are exchanging messages in the same conversation?
  • What happens when a user roams to a different region from where their conversation's home shard lives?
  • How do you reconcile presence information and read receipts across multiple regions?
  • Walk through the tradeoffs between consistency, cost, and disaster recovery in this architecture.

“I started with the usual stuff, WebSockets for persistent connections, Cassandra keyed by conversationId and timestamp, Redis for presence.”

Apr 2026
Microsoft PM interview with a product design question about building a refrigerator for kids. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • How would you design a refrigerator specifically for children?

“I spent probably too long trying to define the user before actually getting into features.”

Apr 2026
Applied Scientist interview at Microsoft with a system design question focused on building a real-time code completion service at massive scale. Pretty intense single-question format that pushed hard on latency and throughput constraints.
  • Design a service that accepts a code context of up to 1,000 tokens and returns the top 5 completion suggestions within 100 milliseconds, at a scale serving millions of concurrent developers.

“The latency constraint is what trips you up if you're not careful.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Microsoft data engineer interview with a classic frequency-counting problem. Nothing too wild but it made me think harder than I expected about the tradeoffs between different approaches.
  • Given an array of numbers and a positive integer K, return the K most frequently occurring elements. Ties can be broken arbitrarily.

“I jumped straight to sorting by frequency, which works but is O(n log n).”

Interviewed for a business analyst role at Microsoft, got a case-style operations question about grocery delivery logistics. Pretty involved for what I expected to be a straightforward screen.
  • How would you optimize fulfillment time for grocery deliveries in high-traffic zones?

“I went straight to routing and driver allocation, which felt obvious in retrospect.”

Microsoft SWE interview with a tree conversion problem that sounds straightforward until you realize there are a few ways to approach it and they want you to actually think through the tradeoffs. Pretty algorithmic, no behavioral stuff from what I can tell.
  • Given an N-ary tree where each node holds a comparable value, convert it into a Binary Search Tree containing the same multiset of values. Walk through your approach and discuss when a balanced output matters.

“My first instinct was to just do an in-order traversal and insert one by one into a BST, which works but I didn't immediately think about balance.”

Apr 2026
Applied Scientist interview at Microsoft that went deep on CTR prediction, basically a full system design walkthrough covering everything from raw data to live A/B tests. Dense question, lots of ground to cover.
  • Walk through a complete CTR prediction system end-to-end: how you'd define labels, engineer features, choose a model, handle imbalance and bias, calibrate outputs, evaluate offline, and deploy with A/B testing.

“This was basically a marathon question.”

Microsoft·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Microsoft PM interview, got a machine learning product question that I wasn't fully prepped for. Not the most technical role but they still pushed into the weeds on how you'd actually build something.
  • How would you use machine learning to detect fake reviews on a platform?

“I started with the obvious stuff, behavioral signals, review velocity, account age, that kind of thing.”

PM interview at Microsoft, got a product design question about building a LinkedIn-style platform but aimed at blue collar workers. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a professional networking platform tailored specifically for blue collar workers.

“I jumped straight into features and kind of skipped the 'why does this even need to exist differently' part.”
