Microsoft·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Interviewed at Microsoft for a product role centered around building a crowd-sourced knowledge management portal. Not a lot of detail to go on, but the core prompt was meaty enough to keep me busy.
  • How would you design a crowd-sourced knowledge management portal?

“This is the kind of open-ended product design question that sounds easy until you're actually in it.”

Microsoft SWE interview with a streaming/parsing problem that had a clean easy version and a nastier follow-up. Pretty focused session, just the one problem but it went in directions I didn't fully anticipate.
  • You're receiving a stream of string chunks. Concatenate them and output every character up until a designated stop token appears. Once the stop token is seen, stop outputting. The stop token is not included in the output. For this version, assume the stop token always arrives fully contained within a single chunk.
  • Follow-up to the above: what if the stop token can span across multiple chunks? How would you handle that case?

“The basic version felt manageable.”

Microsoft SWE interview with a classic water jug puzzle. Not the most complex problem on paper but it pushed me to think more carefully about GCD and reachability than I expected.
  • You have two empty jugs with capacities A liters and B liters, and unlimited water. How do you measure out exactly X liters?

“My first instinct was to just describe the fill-and-pour steps without thinking about whether X was even achievable.”

Microsoft SWE coding round, one question on linked lists. Pretty standard but the O(1) space constraint is where things get interesting if you haven't thought about it before.
  • Given the head of a singly linked list, determine whether it forms a palindrome. Can you do it in O(n) time with O(1) extra space?

“The naive approach with a stack or array is obvious and I think they expected me to start there, but the real question is the in-place version.”

Microsoft PM interview, just one question from what I can tell. Pretty conceptual, the kind of thing that sounds easy until you're actually in it.
  • How would you explain what a blockchain is to a five-year-old?

“I fumbled this more than I expected.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Microsoft system design round focused entirely on API lifecycle management. One long question, very structured expectations, felt more like a staff-level design review than a typical SWE screen.
  • Walk through the full end-to-end process for shipping a change to a public-facing API, covering compatibility analysis, versioning strategy, deprecation planning, staged rollout, testing, monitoring, rollback, and customer communication. How does the process differ for breaking versus non-breaking changes?

“This was the whole interview basically.”

Got an Applied Scientist screen at Microsoft that came down to a single geometry problem. Not the ML theory deep-dive I was expecting.
  • Given an array of 2D points, find the maximum number of points that all lie on the same straight line.

“I knew the trick was slope comparison but fumbled the edge cases for a while.”

Microsoft coding round, one question, sliding window. Pretty standard stuff but worth logging for anyone prepping.
  • Given a string, find the length of the longest substring that contains no repeating characters.

“Classic sliding window problem.”

Microsoft PM interview with a product sense case about an amusement park queue problem. Pretty open-ended and I wasn't sure how deep to go on the operations side versus the product side.
  • An amusement park has a ride with a persistently long queue that's becoming a serious problem. How would you approach solving this?

“I went straight into capacity and throughput which felt wrong the moment I said it out loud.”

PM interview at Microsoft with a metrics-focused product question about Instagram Stories engagement. Pretty standard product analytics framing but it required more structure than I brought to it.
  • Instagram Stories creation is up but engagement is declining. What metrics would you track to diagnose and improve this?

“I jumped straight to view counts and completion rates, which felt obvious in retrospect.”
