Mistral AI·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
System design interview at Mistral AI for a software engineering role. The whole thing was centered on one meaty problem: building an inference API to convert PDFs to Markdown using a fixed set of primitives. Started synchronous, then pivoted to a full async multi-tenant design. Pretty demanding for a single session.
  • A single user uploads a 1000-page PDF and waits for the result. Design the API and processing pipeline to return all converted pages as fast as possible, covering how you parallelize the CPU-bound splitting stage, batch the GPU OCR stage, and pipeline all three stages together.
  • Now redesign the system for many concurrent users where results can be returned asynchronously. Cover the job submission and polling or webhook API, how you structure separate worker pools for each stage, autoscaling per stage, and how you handle backpressure, fairness across tenants, retries, and partial failures in a multi-page job.

“This is where I spent most of my energy.”

Interviewed for a PM role at Mistral AI. Just one question I can remember clearly, and it was a pretty specific one about prosumer experience that I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • What experience do you have working with prosumers, and what did that work look like?

“I had to pause for a second because I wasn't sure how they were defining prosumer in this context.”

Interviewed for a software engineering role at Mistral AI and got a question I wasn't fully expecting about using AI coding tools responsibly during the interview itself. Meta in a way that made me second-guess everything mid-answer.
  • If AI coding assistants are permitted during a live coding interview, how would you use them responsibly? Walk through how you'd prompt for scaffolding, verify and clean up the output, avoid leaking sensitive info, credit sources where needed, and keep yourself from over-relying on the tool.

“This one twisted me up a bit because I kept second-guessing whether they wanted a philosophical answer or an actual workflow.”

Mistral AI·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
PM interview at Mistral AI focused on designing an AI tool for professional users. Three questions, all product strategy flavored, and the adoption one caught me more off guard than I expected.
  • Design an AI tool aimed at professional consumers. Who are these users and what problem are you solving for them?
  • How would you approach launching this AI product to professional users?
  • Adoption has plateaued after launch. How do you figure out what's wrong and get it growing again?

“I spent probably too long trying to nail down what 'professional consumer' even means.”

Interviewed for a software engineer role at Mistral AI and got a simulation/array manipulation problem that looked deceptively simple at first glance. The question had some interesting edge cases once I actually thought it through.
  • You're given an array of GPU cluster capacities and a list of daily usage events (each event has a day, a cluster index, and a GPU count consumed). Write a function that returns a 2D array where each row shows the remaining GPU capacity per cluster at the end of that day. Clusters reset to full capacity each new day.

“My first instinct was to just iterate through the events and subtract, which is mostly right, but I fumbled the reset logic initially.”

Short screen for a PM role at Mistral AI, basically one question about AI experience and that was it.
  • Have you worked with AI or generative AI products before?

“Pretty much the whole conversation in one sentence.”

Puzzle-heavy technical screen for a software engineer role at Mistral AI. Three problems back to back: probability, work rates, and a combinatorics battery puzzle. The battery one was the most interesting and probably where most people slow down.
  • If the probability of seeing at least one car in one hour is 0.99, what is the probability of seeing at least one car in a half hour?
  • One crew finishes a job in 6 days, another in 8 days. How long do they take working together?
  • You have 8 batteries, 4 of which work. A toy requires 2 working batteries to turn on. What is the minimum number of tests needed to guarantee finding a working pair?

“My first instinct was to just halve 0.99, which is obviously wrong but the brain does weird things under pressure.”

May 2026
Interviewed for an MLE role at Mistral AI and got hit with a memory-efficiency question that looked deceptively simple on the surface. The whole thing was pretty technical and pushed into system-level thinking more than I expected for an ML interview.
  • Given N data points with D dimensions and K cluster centers, assign each point to its nearest center using squared L2 distance. The naive approach creates an N x K x D tensor in memory. What's the problem with that, and how do you design something more memory-efficient?
  • How would you adapt this nearest-center assignment approach for cosine distance instead of L2?
  • How would you handle streaming points where you can't load all N points into memory at once?
  • What changes if you move this computation to a GPU, and how would you accelerate it?
  • If you used approximate nearest neighbors instead of exact assignment, how does that change the memory and accuracy tradeoff?

“I knew the naive version was bad but fumbled explaining exactly why for a second.”

Interviewed for a PM role at Mistral AI. Just one question worth noting but it was a heavy one, the kind where you realize halfway through your answer that you're not actually backing anything up with data.
  • Walk me through a difficult product decision you made and how you justified it.

“I picked a story I'd told before and felt comfortable with, which was probably a mistake because I got complacent and skimped on the 'how you backed it up' part.”

Mistral AI software engineer interview with a meaty DP problem that took me a while to fully work through. The GPU scheduling setup carries over from a prior part, so you're building on existing state rather than starting fresh, which adds a layer of pressure.
  • Given a 2D grid where grid[d][c] represents GPUs available on day d at cluster c, find the maximum total GPUs a workload can consume over all days if it runs on exactly one cluster per day and can switch clusters at most K times total.

“The multi-part setup is what gets you.”
