System design round at MongoDB for a software engineer role, basically one big question about building a resume search platform end to end. The scope was enormous and I kept second-guessing how deep to go on each piece.

Design a resume search platform where applicants upload resumes, a backend parses and indexes them, and recruiters can search and view results.
How would you model resume metadata and handle versioning when a candidate re-uploads their resume?
Walk through the asynchronous processing pipeline for parsing and generating previews, including how you'd handle retries and idempotency.
What storage would you choose for resume files versus structured metadata, and what are the trade-offs?
How would you design the search API and indexing strategy, including filters for skills, location, experience, and education?
How would you secure file access and handle PII for resumes, including access control between applicants and recruiters?
How would you scale this system and manage data lifecycle as the volume of resumes grows over time?

Director-level loop at MongoDB, one big open-ended question about a project you're proud of, then a bunch of follow-ups probing how you think about scope and judgment. The whole thing felt more like a conversation than an interview, which honestly threw me a bit.

Walk me through an exciting project you've worked on. What was it, why did it matter, what did you own, what decisions did you make, and what would you do differently?
How did you handle collaboration challenges or disagreements with other teams during that project?
There was a lot of ambiguity at the start of that project. How did you navigate that and make progress without having full clarity?
Tell me about a setback or failure during that project and how you responded to it.

MongoDB coding round, pretty much one meaty question that sprawled into a whole systems conversation. The LRU implementation itself was fine but the thread-safety follow-up is where things got interesting and a little uncomfortable.

Implement an LRU cache with O(1) get and put operations using a hash map and doubly linked list.
How would you make your LRU cache thread-safe under concurrent access? Walk through the trade-offs of different locking strategies.

MongoDB SWE interview with a single coding question about merging two sorted iterators. Pretty focused session, no fluff, just the problem and a lot of edge case poking.

Given two iterators over pre-sorted sequences, implement a UnionIterator class with hasNext() and getNext() that returns elements in sorted order with duplicates removed across both sources. You cannot load everything into memory; you must use O(1) extra space beyond the iterators themselves.

Given two iterators over sorted, deduplicated sequences, implement a new iterator that emits the union of both in sorted order with no duplicates.
Now generalize your solution to k sorted, internally-deduplicated iterators. Walk through the data structure choice, time complexity, and space usage.

Design an iterator that produces the union of elements from two input iterators, supporting hasNext() and next(). Walk through how you'd handle duplicates, lazy evaluation, and the case where one or both iterators are infinite.

Did a technical round for an MLE role at MongoDB and got completely stuck on a dynamic programming problem. The interviewer was patient and walked me through it with hints, but when you don't have the core idea, hints only go so far.

Given two integer arrays of equal length, assign elements from one array to the other (as a permutation) to minimize the total XOR sum across all pairs.
