Robinhood·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Robinhood software engineer interview that went pretty deep into a project I'd worked on, plus a few behavioral questions mixed in. The level of detail they pushed for on the project side surprised me a bit.
  • Walk me through a project you worked on in depth.
  • What were the biggest challenges you ran into during that project?
  • What did you take away from working through those challenges?

“They really meant it when they said deep dive.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Robinhood for a senior/staff engineering role. The whole session was a deep dive into building a distributed job scheduler, and the interviewer kept steering things toward failure modes rather than letting me stay in happy-path territory.
  • Design a distributed job scheduler that supports both cron-style recurring jobs and one-off scheduled jobs at scale. Walk through the full system including API design, storage, dispatch, and reliability.
  • How would you handle deduplication and idempotency to avoid running the same job twice if the dispatcher fires it more than once?
  • How do you elect a leader for the scheduler process, and what happens during a network partition or when the leader crashes?
  • How would you design retry logic with backoff for failed jobs, and how do you prevent retries from overwhelming the system during a broad outage?
  • What does multi-region failover look like for this system, and how do you avoid running duplicate jobs across regions during a failover event?
  • How would you instrument this system for observability? What metrics, logs, and alerts matter most?

“I started with the API surface (submit, cancel, list) and moved into storage pretty quickly.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round at Robinhood for a software engineer role. Pretty standard stuff covering past projects, how you work with stakeholders, and team dynamics. Come with real examples ready.
  • Walk me through a past project and explain why you made the technical decisions you did.
  • How do you explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders?
  • Tell me about a time you had to manage expectations or escalate a risk to leadership.
  • Describe a disagreement you had with a teammate and how you resolved it.
  • How does your team handle code reviews and dividing up work?

“I had a story prepped but fumbled the 'why' part.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Recruiter / HR Screen

Apr 2026
Quick HR screen for a software engineer role at Robinhood, maybe 15 minutes total. Pretty standard stuff, nothing technical, just the usual get-to-know-you questions before they decide if you're worth scheduling further.
  • Tell me about a time you stepped out of your comfort zone.

“I had something prepared but it felt a little thin in the moment.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Robinhood SWE interview that came down to a graph problem with a twist I didn't fully see coming. The dependency propagation angle made it less obvious than a standard topological sort.
  • You're given a list of programs and a list of prerequisite pairs where (a, b) means a depends on b. For each program, compute how many programs directly or transitively depend on it. Ignore any pairs that reference programs outside the initial list. Return a map of program name to that count.

“I went straight to topological sort and built a reverse adjacency list, which was the right instinct.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Robinhood for a software engineering role. One question, pretty open-ended, centered around building a restaurant app that estimates wait times given a set of inputs.
  • Design a restaurant application that estimates expected customer waiting time based on the number of available waiters, tables, and current customers.

“I spent the first few minutes trying to clarify scope, which I think was the right call.”

Robinhood·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
PM interview at Robinhood with one big open-ended strategy question about disrupting the mortgage industry. No notes on how it went, so I'm reading between the lines here.
  • If Robinhood were to enter the mortgage industry, how would you approach disrupting it?

“This is the kind of question where you either have a point of view or you flounder.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Robinhood focused entirely on building an internal authorization service. Pretty deep dive, they pushed hard on caching and propagation tradeoffs which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a company-internal authorization service that controls who can perform which actions on which resources.
  • What are the tradeoffs between role-based and attribute-based access control, and when would you use a hybrid model?
  • How would you design the system to enforce the principle of least privilege, including support for time-boxed access grants?
  • How do you propagate permission changes across data centers quickly and with a bounded SLA?
  • Where would you place caches in this architecture and how would you handle invalidation to bound staleness?

“Big open-ended question with a lot of surface area.”

Robinhood·Product Manager·Hiring Manager Screen

Apr 2026
Short product sense screen at Robinhood, basically just one question about a product you use and what makes it good. Nothing too intense but it's the kind of thing that trips you up if you haven't thought about it beforehand.
  • What's a product you use frequently, and what do you think are its most important features?

“Picked something I genuinely use every day which probably helped me sound less rehearsed.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Robinhood for a software engineer role. The whole thing centered on designing a photo management system, which sounds straightforward until you're 20 minutes in and realize you've barely scratched the surface on storage and metadata.
  • Design a photo management system that supports uploading photos, organizing them into albums, adding and removing photos from albums, listing album contents, and viewing photo metadata. Walk through the API design, storage architecture, metadata modeling, scalability, and reliability.

“This is a deceptively wide question.”
