Robinhood·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Interviewed at Robinhood, got a product sense question about defining and identifying a 'good investor' on the platform. Short and conceptually tricky.
  • How would you define what makes a 'good investor' on Robinhood, and how would you identify one?

“Stumbled on this more than I expected.”

A product-heavy DS case at Robinhood centered entirely on fractional share trading. The whole thing was one long structured problem covering business rationale, experiment design, stats, and what to do when your sample size is unrealistic. No behavioral, no SQL, just this.
  • What are the expected benefits of launching fractional share trading, both for users and for the business?
  • Design an experiment to evaluate the fractional shares launch. What is your primary success metric, and what diagnostic and guardrail metrics would you track?
  • What should the unit of randomization be for this experiment, and how would you define the treatment and control experiences?
  • What are the key risks in this experiment? Specifically address novelty effects, seasonality, network effects, and selection bias.
  • Walk through how you would estimate the required sample size for your primary metric. State your assumptions explicitly.
  • If you needed to adjust the sample size partway through the experiment, how would you do that without inflating your false positive rate?
  • If the required sample size is too large given your traffic or time constraints, what are your options? Give at least three approaches and discuss the tradeoffs.

“Started with users because that felt easier: lower barrier to entry, people can invest in high-priced stocks with whatever cash they have, better portfolio diversification.”

Robinhood SWE interview with a classic interval merging problem. Pretty standard coding round, nothing too wild, but the kind of question where you either see it cleanly or you fumble the edge cases.
  • Given an array of intervals, merge all overlapping ones and return a list of non-overlapping intervals that cover the full input.

“Classic problem but the edge cases get you if you're not careful.”

System design round at Robinhood for a software engineer role. The format was a bit unusual since you had to come in with a prepared presentation about something you actually built, then they'd grill you on it.
  • Walk us through a system or product you personally built or owned. Cover the business problem, your role, the architecture, the hardest technical challenge, and the measurable outcome.
  • How did your design handle retries, duplicate requests, and idempotency? Walk through what happens when something fails partway through.
  • How did you validate that your design was actually correct in production? What gave you confidence it was behaving as intended?

“Bringing your own material sounds easier than it is.”

Project deep-dive round at Robinhood where they pick apart every decision you made on a recent project. Not a casual chat, they will follow up on follow-ups until you either have a real answer or run out of road.
  • Walk me through a recent project end-to-end: why it was built, what your specific role was, the technical design, trade-offs you made, problems you ran into, and the final impact.
  • Why did you make that specific technical decision at that point in the design? What alternatives did you consider and why did you rule them out?
  • What was the hardest challenge during this project and how did you resolve it?
  • What would you do differently if you were starting this project over today?

“This is the whole interview basically.”

Robinhood system design round for a software engineer role, focused entirely on building a production-grade ML inference serving platform. The scope was massive and I definitely didn't cover everything they wanted, but it was a genuinely interesting problem.
  • Design a large-scale ML inference serving system that supports online prediction with low-latency SLAs, batch inference, A/B testing, shadow traffic, model versioning, autoscaling across GPU and CPU pools, multi-tenant isolation, and operational concerns like rollout, rollback, and drift monitoring.

“This is a beast of a question.”

Coding round at Robinhood for a software engineer role. Finished in under 30 minutes because I'd seen the problem before, felt pretty good about it, and still got rejected. Classic.
  • Given a tree structure representing referrals, count the number of descendants for each node.
  • How would you adapt the solution to handle a live system where nodes are being added continuously?

“Had seen this before so it came out clean.”

Robinhood SWE interview with a graph propagation problem that starts simple but has a neat optimization hiding in it. The follow-up is where things get interesting and probably where most people either shine or quietly fall apart.
  • You're given a directed acyclic graph as an edge list and a root node. A trigger starts at the root and propagates to all reachable descendants. For each node in a target set, how many times does it get triggered? Then optimize it.

“I went with DFS first which is the obvious move, just count how many times you visit each node.”

System design round at Robinhood for a frontend engineer role. The question was a full photo management system and it went pretty deep pretty fast.
  • Design a photo management system that supports uploading photos, organizing them into albums, sharing albums with other users, and browsing or searching a personal library.

“This one sprawled in every direction.”

Robinhood data scientist interview focused on product health metrics after a feature launch. Three connected questions that built on each other, which I didn't fully anticipate going in.
  • After launching a new product feature, what core metrics would you track to evaluate its health, and how would you compute them?
  • A key metric drops 5% suddenly. Walk through the possible root causes and explain what data you'd pull to validate each one.
  • Design an experiment to test a UI change meant to improve that metric. Cover the unit of randomization, your hypothesis, how long you'd run it, and what success looks like.

“I went straight to DAU and conversion rate, which was fine, but I fumbled explaining how to actually compute them in context.”
