Roblox·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Roblox software engineer interview, coding round focused on a single algorithmic problem with two follow-ups. The main question was the 'most frequent call stack' problem, which I'd seen referenced on 1point3acres before.
  • Given a list of call stacks, find the most frequently occurring call stack (plus two follow-up variations on the same problem).

“I'd actually seen this problem floating around before so I wasn't starting from zero.”

Roblox SWE screen, got a rate-limiting style design question that looked deceptively easy. Took me a minute to realize the naive approach had some edge cases worth talking through.
  • Design a Logger class that receives messages with timestamps and only allows the same message to be printed once every 10 seconds. Implement shouldPrintMessage(timestamp, message) returning true if the message should print, false otherwise.

“My first instinct was just a hashmap from message to last-printed timestamp, which is basically the right answer, but I spent too long second-guessing it.”

Roblox·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

System design round at Roblox for a software engineer role, focused entirely on building a matchmaking service from scratch. Pretty deep dive, they wanted the full picture from API design down to how you handle skill drift and abuse.
  • Design an online game matchmaking service that groups players into sessions based on skill rating, region, party size, and game mode.
  • How would you design the API for the matchmaking service, including queue entry, match acceptance or decline, and re-queuing after a player drops out?
  • What data model would you use to represent players, queues, and match sessions?
  • How would you implement the queuing and bucketing strategy to ensure low wait times while still producing fair matches?
  • How would you handle skill rating updates after a match, and what are the tradeoffs between different ranking systems?
  • What anti-abuse mechanisms would you build into the matchmaking service?
  • How would you scale this service to support millions of concurrent players, and how would you handle regional sharding and fault tolerance?

“This is the core question and it's bigger than it looks.”

Roblox·Data Scientist·Online Assessment (OA)

May 2026
Roblox data science interview with a coding problem that looked like a clean ML task but had a few gotchas hiding in the setup. The data was transposed from the usual sklearn convention and the tie-breaking rule was easy to miss.
  • Given a 2D array where rows are features and columns are observations, fit a logistic regression model with an intercept and no regularization, then return the top 3 feature names ranked by absolute coefficient value, breaking ties alphabetically.

“The transposed layout tripped me up for longer than I'd like to admit.”

Got a Bayes' rule question for a Data Scientist role at Roblox, pretty much a classic probability derivation with a numeric sanity check tacked on. Nothing too wild but you do need to actually know the math cold.
  • Given a binary event with a known prior probability, and observed evidence with known conditional likelihoods, derive the posterior probability using Bayes' rule. Also show how to compute the marginal probability of the evidence from the given quantities, and optionally walk through a numeric example.

“This is one of those questions where you either know the formula or you're staring at the whiteboard hoping muscle memory kicks in.”

Roblox data scientist interview with a stats coding question. Pretty focused on implementation details, not just theory.
  • Write a Python function that computes a p-value given a test statistic, a choice of distribution (Z or t), degrees of freedom, and a one-sided or two-sided alternative hypothesis.

“I knew the formula but fumbled the two-sided case for a second.”

Roblox coding round focused on a rate limiter problem that kept evolving mid-interview. The core implementation wasn't too bad but the follow-up extensions caught me off guard and I made some sloppy off-by-one mistakes under pressure.
  • Implement a rate limiter with an allow(timestamp) function that permits or denies a request based on a configurable limit of N requests per W-second window.
  • How would you extend the rate limiter to support per-user limits and handle a distributed deployment?

“Started with a fixed-window approach and it seemed fine until they asked me to walk through edge cases.”

Roblox data scientist interview had a pandas/Python question built around an e-commerce orders dataset. Pretty standard analytics stuff but the multi-part structure meant you had to keep your head straight and not rush through it.
  • Given an orders dataset in pandas, do three things: find the highest-priced order per user, compute the overall average order price, and break down total orders and average price by calendar day.

“The idxmax part tripped me up a little.”

Interviewed for a PM role at Roblox, got a pretty standard behavioral question about product launches. Short round, nothing too wild.
  • Tell me about a time you launched a product.

“Picked a launch I knew well but probably talked too long setting up the context.”

Roblox·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at Roblox for a software engineer role. The whole session was one big deep-dive into a like counter system, which sounds deceptively simple until you're 40 minutes in and the interviewer is asking about CDC pipelines and race conditions.
  • Design a like button counter system that supports liking and unliking posts, shows the total like count in near-real-time, and indicates whether the current user has liked a specific post.
  • How would you use Change Data Capture to sync a source-of-truth likes database with a separate read-optimized aggregated counts store?
  • How do you handle caching for like counts, especially for posts that suddenly get very high traffic?
  • How would you prevent double-counting and handle race conditions when a user rapidly likes and unlikes a post?

“I started with the data model and spent probably too long on it.”
