SAP·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
SAP software engineer screen, basically just a single warmup coding question. Nothing complex, felt more like a sanity check than a real technical round.
  • Write a function that takes two numbers and returns their sum.

“Yeah it's exactly what it sounds like.”

SAP technical screen for a software engineer role, pretty focused on async JavaScript and API chaining. One question that looked simple on the surface turned into a whole conversation about parallelization.
  • Write an async function that fetches the first 10 Pokemon from the list endpoint, then retrieves each one's detail endpoint in parallel, and returns an array of objects containing name, height, weight, and the front sprite image URL.

“I got the basic structure down pretty fast, map over the names, fetch each detail, pull out the fields.”

SAP data science interview with a pretty hands-on ML engineering question about modifying PyTorch training code. One question, fairly deep, felt more like a coding screen than a standard ML theory chat.
  • Given this PyTorch pseudo-code for a classification model with cross-entropy loss, how would you modify it to use negative sampling instead of computing loss over all classes, assuming you already know the positive IDs?

“This one took me a second to parse because the pseudo-code mixes numpy and PyTorch conventions, which felt a bit sloppy on their end but whatever.”

SAP data science interview with a meaty ML system design problem. One question, but it had enough moving parts to keep me busy for a while.
  • You have 1,000 labeled avatar images and 100,000 user descriptions paired with avatars. Design a model that recommends the best matching image from a new pool of 100,000 images for a given user description.

“My first instinct was to frame it as a retrieval problem using learned embeddings, text on one side, image on the other, train them to agree in a shared space.”

SAP coding screen, pretty barebones. Just one function to write and that was basically it.
  • Write a function that takes two strings and returns them concatenated together.

“Yeah this is exactly as simple as it sounds.”

SAP·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
SAP PM interview with a product strategy question that required thinking beyond the obvious data sources. Pretty focused, just the one question from what I can tell, but it had some depth to it.
  • If a competitor ships a new feature, and you set aside user feedback and engagement metrics entirely, what other data sources would you look at to decide whether to build something similar?

“This one tripped me up a bit because removing user feedback and engagement data feels like taking away the two most obvious answers.”

May 2026
SAP coding screen for a software engineer role, pretty light on the surface but they threw in a follow-up that made me think harder than expected.
  • Implement a curried function that takes two arguments one at a time and returns their sum. Then generalize it to handle any number of chained calls, accumulating the total until no argument is passed.

“The basic version I got down fast, just return a function from a function, done.”

SAP·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
SAP software engineer screen, basically one coding task involving a public API fetch. Pretty straightforward but there were a few small things to get right.
  • Using the public Pokemon API, write an async function that fetches the first 10 Pokemon and returns an array of objects each containing the name and url fields.

“Seemed easy and it mostly was.”

Got a coding question from SAP for a software engineer role, pretty focused on string formatting logic. Nothing crazy, but the edge cases around punctuation tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Given an array of author objects, write a function that returns a sentence listing their full names with proper Oxford-comma formatting, ending with 'are authors.'

“Looked simple and I almost didn't think twice about it.”

SAP data science interview with a system design question focused on anomaly detection for ship tracking. Pretty niche problem, felt like they wanted to see how you'd think through messy real-world data before jumping to any model.
  • Design a system that detects ships deviating from their expected course, given a dataset of position records as tuples of (ship_ID, x, y, z, timestamp) with irregular time intervals.

“The irregular timestamps tripped me up more than I expected.”
