Snap·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Snapchat system design round focused entirely on building a news aggregator from scratch, no RSS, all API-based sources. Dense question with a lot of moving parts and I definitely underestimated how far they'd push on the dedup and personalisation layers.
  • Design a news aggregator like Google News where all content must be fetched via each source's API rather than RSS feeds.
  • How would you handle deduplication and clustering of articles about the same story coming from multiple different sources?
  • Walk through how you'd schedule and prioritise polling across hundreds of news sources, including handling failures and back-off.
  • How would you design the storage and indexing layer to support both low-latency search and personalised user feeds?
  • How do you balance freshness versus relevance when ranking articles in a personalised feed?

“I started with the pull scheduler and worked outward, which felt natural but I think I spent too long on rate limiting and auth per source before even touching dedup or ranking.”

Snap·Backend Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Snapchat backend design round, one big question about a file storage system with access control. Pretty deep dive, we spent most of the time on the data model and the authorization query logic. Felt okay but not great coming out of it.
  • Design a file storage system with access control, where users belong to groups, permissions can be assigned to users or groups at the file or folder level, and access inherits down through folder hierarchies.

“The data model part I felt decent about.”

Snap·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Snapchat software engineering interview that leaned heavily into statistical intuition. The question felt more like a math/ML theory check than a coding round, which threw me a bit.
  • Why does the median minimize the sum of absolute deviations (L1) while the mean minimizes the sum of squared deviations (L2)? Walk through the intuition and a rough derivation. Then extend this to picking an optimal point in 2D under Manhattan vs Euclidean distance, and explain when the mean becomes a bad estimator because of outliers.

“I knew the punchline but fumbled the derivation.”

Snap·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Snapchat ML Engineer system design round, one massive question about building a harmful content detection system from scratch. The scope was enormous and I felt like I was constantly triaging what to cover versus what to skip.
  • Design a complete harmful content detection system covering taxonomy definition, labeling, multilingual and multimodal support, model choices, inference architecture, human review workflows, adversarial robustness, fairness, and continuous improvement.

“This was basically five system design questions rolled into one.”

Snap·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Interviewed for an ML Engineer role at Snapchat and got hit with a deep theory question about gradient instability in neural networks. Pretty rigorous for what I expected to be a mid-level screen.
  • Why do vanishing and exploding gradients occur in deep neural networks, and what techniques exist to address them?

“I started with the repeated multiplication angle, which felt solid, then moved into saturating activations like sigmoid and tanh.”

Snap·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Snapchat Data Scientist interview with a pandas wrangling task on story engagement data. Pretty straightforward if you know your groupby patterns, but the filtering step tripped me up a bit.
  • Given a story engagement dataset, use pandas to find users who have posted at least three group stories, and separately aggregate total views and likes broken down by story type.

“I started with the aggregation part first because it felt easier, groupby story_type and sum views and likes, that was fine.”

Snap·Data Scientist·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Snapchat onsite for a product data science role, behavioral and leadership heavy. The whole thing was framed around a cross-functional product launch scenario where you're driving outcomes without owning anyone's roadmap, which sounds manageable until you're actually in the room.
  • Walk me through your background and why it makes you a strong fit for a product data science role.
  • Tell me about a time you got a team or partner org to move in a direction you wanted, without having any formal authority over them.
  • What's the hardest piece of feedback you've received, and what did you actually do with it?
  • When leadership, data signals, and UX research are all pointing in different directions, how do you figure out what to do?

“I had a version of this answer ready but I think I leaned too hard into the technical side and not enough on the product judgment angle.”

Snap·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
ML system design interview at Snapchat for an MLE role. The whole thing was one long design question about building a recommendation system for Lenses, with two meaty follow-ups that went pretty deep into cold start and multi-objective modeling. Felt like a real engineering conversation rather than a quiz.
  • Design a full recommendation system for Snapchat Lenses, covering problem framing, candidate generation, ranking model architecture, feature design, label and objective definition, and both training and serving pipelines.
  • How would you handle cold start for both brand-new Lenses with no engagement history and new users with no behavioral data?
  • Users can view, try, share, or save a Lens. How do you model these different engagement levels? Walk through the trade-offs between a single weighted model versus separate models per action combined into a final score.

“Big open-ended question and I spent probably too long on candidate generation before they nudged me toward ranking.”

Snap·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at Snapchat for a software engineer role. Just one question but they really wanted you to go deep on it, not just rattle off a project name and call it a day.
  • Walk me through a project you're most proud of. What was the goal, what did you specifically do, what obstacles came up, and what was the actual impact?

“This sounds like a softball until you realize they want all five layers: context, your role, the hard parts, the outcome with numbers, and what you took away from it.”

Snap·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at Snapchat for a software engineering role, focused on how you handle decisions when you don't have the full picture. Pretty standard loop but the follow-up questions had some bite to them.
  • Tell me about a time you had to make an important decision with incomplete, ambiguous, or conflicting information. What was the decision, what did you know vs. not know, and how did you move forward?

“The follow-ups are where this question gets real.”
