SpaceX·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

Aug 2026
Passed the first round for a SpaceX Starlink SWE intern role. The screen was purely experience-based, no coding, but the interviewer kept pivoting my project stories into technical follow-ups about tradeoffs and CS fundamentals, which was a bit unexpected.
  • Walk me through a past project you worked on in detail.
  • What were the tradeoffs of the approach you used in that project?
  • Can you explain the underlying CS fundamentals behind what you built?

“Thought this would be a normal 'tell me what you built' kind of thing, but they kept pulling threads.”

SpaceX·Software Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

Jul 2026
Pre-onsite post from a new grad candidate heading into SpaceX's Starlink software engineering interview. The process includes a technical assessment presentation followed by a string of 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 interviews. Candidate is nervous, prepping hard, and wrestling with a specific dilemma about how much of their optimized solution to actually present.
  • When presenting a technical solution you completed earlier, how do you decide how far to push the optimization? Do you present the best possible solution even if you couldn't have arrived at it independently, or do you stick to what you genuinely own and flag further improvements as future work?

“This is the one I keep going back and forth on.”
