Stripe·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Stripe coding screen for a software engineer role. One question, pretty focused on CSV joining logic. Not a flashy interview but the extension to handle unmatched rows tripped me up more than I expected.
  • You're given a function that joins two CSV-like datasets on a shared key field, preserving the customer file's row order. Extend it to do a left join: every customer row should appear in the output, and if there's no matching row in the processor file, fill those columns with empty strings.

“I got the basic join working fine but fumbled on the left join part for longer than I should've.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Stripe system design round for a software engineer role. The whole session was basically one big question about building an email scheduling service, which sounds straightforward but kept expanding the more we talked.
  • Design an email scheduler service that supports one-shot and recurring sends, cancellation, listing pending emails per user, and a dispatcher that fires emails when they come due.
  • How would you handle clock skew and retries in the dispatcher so emails aren't sent twice or dropped entirely?
  • How does this design change when you need to run the scheduler across multiple distributed nodes?

“I started with a min-heap keyed on send_at and they seemed fine with that, but I fumbled a bit when they pushed on cancellation.”

Stripe SWE interview with a coding round focused on systems thinking as much as correctness. The problem looked like a simple round-robin scheduler but they kept pushing on extensibility and state design, which I was not fully prepared for.
  • Implement a connection load balancer that assigns incoming connections to servers in round-robin order. For each connection, output the connection ID and the assigned server index. The data structures should support future extensions like idempotent reconnects, disconnects, capacity limits, and server shutdowns.

“I got the basic round-robin working pretty quickly, a pointer advancing mod the number of servers and a map from connection ID to server index.”

Interviewed for a data science role at Stripe and got hit with a pretty meaty product-analytics question about transaction retry logic. Short post, one question, but it stuck with me.
  • How would you use data to figure out the best time to retry a failed transaction?

“This one took me a second to get my footing on.”

Stripe coding screen, one question about building a subscription renewal reminder scheduler. Pretty focused on getting the filtering and sorting logic right under time pressure.
  • Implement a function that takes a list of subscriptions with expiry dates, a current date, and a lookahead window, then returns the IDs of subscriptions expiring within that window, sorted by expiry date then ID.

“I fumbled the sort order at first.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Stripe for a software engineer role. Just one question but they really sat with it, which made the whole thing feel more like a conversation than a checklist.
  • Tell me about a time you hit a problem you couldn't solve alone. How did you know you needed help, who did you go to, and what happened? What did you take away from the experience?

“I had a decent story ready but fumbled the part about recognizing I needed help.”

Did a system design round at Stripe for a software engineer role. The prompt was a superhero dispatch system, which sounds ridiculous but was actually a decent design exercise. Feedback afterward was that I didn't justify my tech choices well enough.
  • Design a superhero dispatch system where regular people submit rescue requests and available superheroes can pick them up.

“Completely unprepared for this theme.”

Stripe technical screen centered on a map integration problem broken into three parts, all leaning on Python fundamentals and the ability to explain your thinking as you go. Nothing too exotic, but the third sub-task tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Read and parse data from a JSON file using Python's built-in json package.
  • Make an HTTP GET request to a provided URL using a requests-style library in Python.
  • Parse a provided JSON file describing ride data, then generate map markers and path overlays to produce a rendered map image.

“Pretty straightforward.”

Stripe·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Interviewed at Stripe, got a big-picture strategy question about where ecommerce is headed over the next decade. Short post, one question, not much else to go on.
  • Where do you see online commerce going in the next 10 years?

“I rambled.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Final round behavioral at Stripe for a software engineer role. Pretty standard stuff, nothing that threw me off.
  • Tell me about a project you're proud of.
  • Why do you want to work at Stripe?

“Went with something recent and technical.”
