Stripe·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Stripe system design round for a software engineering role. The problem was dense and pretty open-ended, basically a full integration testing framework from scratch. Walked away feeling like I covered maybe 70% of what they were actually looking for.
  • Design a request-replay integration testing system that can capture HTTP or RPC requests from a live source or recorded log, replay them against a target service, and compare each response against the expected output. Your design should handle request ordering, stateful endpoints, and diff-tolerant comparison that ignores things like timestamps and generated IDs.

“This one took me a minute to even scope properly.”

Stripe·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Stripe PM interview with a product strategy question about Apple Maps and small business engagement. Single question, open-ended, the kind where you can go a hundred directions and that's both the fun and the problem.
  • Build a roadmap to drive engagement from small business owners on Apple Maps.

“I spent the first minute trying to figure out what 'engagement' even means here because it's genuinely ambiguous.”

Stripe coding round for a software engineer role. Multi-part problem built around HTTP integration and invoice reconciliation, each part layering on more complexity until you're juggling pagination, retries, and timestamp parsing all at once.
  • Build a program that makes authenticated HTTP requests to a remote API, adding an Authorization header to every call.
  • Upload an invoice file to the API by sending its content in the request body. How do you handle the encoding and structure of that payload?
  • Parse the API response and reconcile it against a local data source. Flag any discrepancies in amount, date, or status.
  • The API returns paginated results. How do you handle pagination to make sure you reconcile all records?
  • How would you handle transient failures when calling the API, and how do you make sure your reconciliation is idempotent?
  • How would you test your reconciliation logic against a live or staging API?

“Seemed straightforward at first.”

Stripe coding round for a software engineer role, one question but it had enough layers to keep me busy for the whole session. The base problem was manageable but the capacity extension is where things got interesting.
  • You're given a connection load balancer with round-robin assignment and basic connect/disconnect support. Extend it so each target server has a max connection capacity, and the round-robin skips full targets cyclically. If all targets are full, silently drop the connection.

“I got the basic round-robin part going pretty quickly, the connId map and next_target pointer are fairly standard stuff.”

May 2026
Stripe PM interview, just one question but it's the kind that spirals fast if you're not careful. Felt like a diagnostic exercise more than a conversation.
  • You're a PM at Lyft. Ride requests in a particular city are down 5% compared to last period. What's going on?

“Classic metrics drop question but I fumbled the structure early.”

Stripe coding interview that extended a previous parsing problem into something with actual teeth. The twist was adding time-windowed queries on top of the key-value log parsing, which pushed it firmly into design territory.
  • You're given log lines in the format `<timestamp>|<key1>:<value1>;<key2>:<value2>;...`. Parse these lines and implement a `top_k(key, t_start, t_end, k)` query that returns the top-k most frequent normalized values for a given key within a time window, sorted by count descending then value ascending.

“The parsing part felt manageable but the windowed query is where things got interesting.”

Interviewed for a PM role at Stripe and got a product sense question that felt deceptively casual. The 'favorite apps' angle threw me a little because it sounds like small talk until they ask you to improve one.
  • What are your three favorite apps, and how would you improve one of them?

“I picked apps I actually use daily which was probably the right call, but I spent too long on the 'favorite' part and not enough setting up a real improvement case.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Stripe technical screen that went deep into a graph/optimization problem I thought I knew. The interviewer kept pushing past the basic solution into territory I was not fully prepared for.
  • Given a list of debt records between people (lender, borrower, amount), find the minimum number of transactions to settle all debts. Walk through your approach and its complexity.
  • The backtracking solution falls apart at scale. What pruning strategies would you apply to make it more tractable?
  • Can you partition the debt graph into independent subproblems and solve each separately? How would you detect those partitions?
  • If exact optimality is too expensive to compute, what approximation strategies would you consider, and when are they acceptable?
  • How do you think about the tradeoff between minimizing transaction count and keeping the solution runtime practical for realistic input sizes?

“I knew this problem.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Stripe coding screen for a software engineer role, focused entirely on parsing a structured invoice string from scratch. Pretty implementation-heavy, less algorithmic than I expected, but the edge case discussion is where things got interesting.
  • Given a structured invoice string with line items, amounts, a currency code, and a total, write a parser using basic string manipulation that extracts each field into a structured record and validates the format.
  • Walk through the edge cases for this invoice parser: empty input, missing trailing newline, unknown currency code, malformed numeric amounts, and line items that contain the delimiter character.

“I went straight to splitting on delimiters and building up the record field by field, which was fine.”

Stripe coding screen for a software engineer role. One problem, clean setup, and the question was more about knowing your data structures than anything clever.
  • Given a list of transactions with account name, timestamp, currency, and amount columns, return only the accounts whose total balance is non-zero, along with their final balance.

“Jumped straight to a hash map keyed by account name and summed the amounts.”
