Stripe·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Stripe Data Scientist interview, technical screen focused entirely on a single gnarly SQL problem. The question was dense enough that I think they were testing whether you'd panic or methodically work through it. No behavioral stuff at all, just pure SQL craft.
  • Write a single PostgreSQL query using CTEs to detect weekly chargeback spikes by country and industry. You need to compute GMV, active merchants, succeeded payment counts, a lagged chargeback rate, week-over-week change in that rate, and top merchant GMV concentration, then filter to rows where the WoW chargeback rate increase exceeds 50% and the top merchant share is below 40%. Weeks start Monday using ISO week truncation. Handle late-arriving chargebacks by joining through payment_id rather than chargeback timestamp alone.

“This one took me a minute to even parse.”

Stripe coding round for a software engineer role, building on a previous multi-currency payment problem with a new wrinkle around cross-currency balance conversions and layered fees. The core logic wasn't too bad but getting the fee math right under pressure was a different story.
  • You have a payment system where a user's balance may be in a different currency than the payment. Given a fixed exchange rate table and a conversion fee on top of the existing payment method fee, determine whether the balance covers the full cost after conversion. If it does, update the balances accordingly.

“This was a follow-up to an earlier multi-currency problem so I thought I had a head start.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Stripe's onsite loop now includes an AI Programming Exercise round where you're expected to use an embedded AI assistant to solve a multi-part transaction rules parsing problem in about 30 minutes. The whole thing felt less like a coding test and more like a test of whether you can actually direct an AI without just rubber-stamping whatever it produces.
  • Given a list of transactions and a set of rules (each rule specifies accept or block, plus a conditional expression), parse the rules and evaluate whether each transaction matches. Later parts introduce boolean logic like AND/OR conditions.

“The first parts are fine, mostly string matching, but then it compounds and if you haven't read the README carefully you start making wrong assumptions.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

May 2026
Went through Stripe's 90-minute HackerRank OA for a new grad ML engineer role and didn't make it through. Four sections: ML theory MCQs, a DSA problem, a pandas/ETL task, and a computer vision pipeline build. The CV section killed me because there was no GPU and the training just never finished in time.
  • Multiple choice questions covering probability, statistics, and core machine learning theory.
  • A LeetCode-style coding problem at easy-to-medium difficulty.
  • A pandas-based data transformation task involving grouping, aggregation, conditional counting, and multi-step filtering.
  • Build a computer vision training pipeline from scratch, including model architecture, loss function, optimizer, validation loop, early stopping, and a prediction CSV output for test images.

“Pretty standard stuff, nothing that should trip you up if you've done any ML coursework.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Stripe coding screen for a software engineer role, pretty focused on a data validation problem around KYC fields. Nothing flashy, but the edge case discussion was where things got interesting.
  • Given a list of business account records, each containing 6 KYC fields, output VERIFIED for records where all 6 fields are present and non-empty, and NOT_VERIFIED for any record that fails that check. How do you handle edge cases around what counts as 'present'?

“The core logic is dead simple, loop through records and check the fields.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Stripe coding screen for a software engineer role. One problem, data-heavy, and more nuanced than it looks on the surface.
  • Given two CSV-like datasets (customer rows and processor rows), each sorted and with a header row, implement a LEFT JOIN on a specified column name that appears in both headers. Every customer row must appear in the output; unmatched rows get empty strings for the processor columns.

“I jumped straight to a hash map approach and the interviewer nudged me toward using the sorted property.”

Jun 2026
Stripe coding round for a software engineer role, focused on processing a stream of HTTP request logs. Two sub-questions to implement, both involving filtering and aggregating the data in different ways. Felt more like a systems-adjacent data wrangling exercise than a pure algorithms problem.
  • Given a log of recorded HTTP requests, implement functionality to filter, aggregate, or group requests by attributes like user, endpoint, or status code.

“Two sub-questions built on top of each other, which I didn't fully anticipate.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Stripe behavioral round for a software engineering role. One question, but it was a heavy one. They wanted the full picture on scope, not just a vague 'I led a project' story.
  • Tell me about the largest project you've led. What was the team size, how many other functions were involved, what constraints did you work within, and what did it actually deliver?

“This question has a lot of sub-parts and I kind of answered them out of order, which felt messy in retrospect.”

First round coding interview at Stripe for a software engineer role. The problem was a notification scheduler, which I managed to get through, but the interviewer pushed hard on edge cases so you really can't just get the happy path and call it done.
  • Design and implement an email notification scheduler.

“Got through it but the interviewer kept poking at corner cases I hadn't thought through.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Stripe system design round for a software engineering role. The question was dense and covered a lot of ground in one shot, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Given a schedule template format and user profile data (timezone, locale, delivery preferences), design and implement a program that generates a personalized notification sheet. Your solution should merge event data with user info, handle recurring events, convert timezones correctly, localize date/time and text, resolve conflicting or overlapping events, and validate missing or malformed fields. Define your input and output schemas, walk through example transformations, and analyze the time and space complexity of your approach.

“This question is basically five questions duct-taped together.”
