Stripe technical screen for a software engineer role. One question about tech stack choices and scale, which sounds simple but actually requires you to have thought carefully about tradeoffs and real numbers.
  • Walk me through your primary tech stack, including languages, frameworks, services, and data stores. Why did you pick these technologies, and what kind of scale and performance requirements have you dealt with?

“I went in thinking this was a warmup question and kind of rambled through my stack without anchoring anything to real numbers.”

Stripe system design interview for a software engineer role. The whole thing was one big multi-part problem around a transaction log processing service, and it escalated pretty fast from basic aggregations to anomaly detection and cross-user analytics. Dense but fair.
  • Design a service that ingests a stream of transaction log entries (each with a transaction ID, user ID, amount, timestamp, and status) and supports basic aggregations like total amount spent and transaction count per user.
  • Extend the service to support time-windowed queries, for example total spend per user in the last N minutes, as well as filtering by transaction status.
  • Further extend the service to support advanced reporting: top-K spenders across all users, anomaly detection based on standard deviations from a user's historical mean, and cross-user joins or comparisons.

“Part one felt manageable.”

Stripe phone screen that was basically one big design problem dressed up as a coding question. The email event stream thing sounds simple but the follow-ups kept stacking and by the end I was juggling four different concerns at once.
  • You're given a stream of email events (send, open, click, bounce, unsubscribe), each with a type, recipient, campaign ID, and timestamp. Build a system that ingests these events and supports count queries by event type and campaign. Then extend it to handle time-window queries, top-recipient lookups, and deduplication of identical events.

“Started fine with a hash map keyed on (type, campaign_id) and that covered the basic count.”

Stripe software engineering interview that was essentially a mini data pipeline exercise. Pretty practical stuff, no leetcode grind, just real-world API integration work end to end.
  • Build a small data integration pipeline: parse a JSON API response, make POST requests to fetch resources, save images to disk in binary mode, and convert string timestamps to datetime objects.

“Bigger than it sounds when you're live coding it.”

Stripe coding screen for a software engineer role. The problem was a load balancer simulation with an idempotency twist, which sounds manageable until you realize the follow-up is the whole point of the question.
  • You have a round-robin connection load balancer. Extend it so that calling CONNECT with an already-connected ID is idempotent: no state changes, no pointer advancement, just return the original assignment.

“The base round-robin part was fine, I had that working pretty quick.”

Stripe technical phone screen for a software engineer role. The problem was a combinatorial optimization thing that felt like it came out of nowhere, way more involved than I expected for a phone screen.
  • You have N factories, each with a list of options where every option has a cost and a distance. You must pick exactly one option per factory. Minimize the total selected costs plus the sum of absolute differences between distances of consecutively selected options. Solve this using backtracking with pruning, and discuss branching order, how you'd estimate lower bounds, and worst-case complexity.

“I stared at this for a solid 30 seconds before saying anything.”

Stripe debugging round, Python templating code, three bugs to find and fix. Pretty niche stuff, not your typical algorithm grind.
  • You're given a Python Mako-style template processor with bugs. One code path doesn't distinguish between a file and a folder as input. Find and fix it.
  • In the same template processor, a node type is missing its visit function, so the node's args never get written to output. Identify the missing function and add it.
  • There's an optional third bug: the parser doesn't handle the case where a ControlLine contains only comments and should be treated as such. The interviewer said you could skip it. Did you attempt it anyway?

“This one took me longer than it should have.”

Interviewed for a SWE role at Stripe, just the one question from what I can tell.
  • Why do you want to work at Stripe?

“Classic opener.”

Stripe DS interview with a meaty experimentation design question that covers basically everything from OEC definition to quasi-experimental fallbacks. One long multi-part problem, not a series of separate questions. Felt more like a take-home prompt delivered verbally.
  • A new recommendation module might cause cross-user interference and traffic seasonality. Design a full evaluation plan: define an OEC and three guardrail metrics with formulas, choose and justify a test design (user-level RCT, geo-cluster, or switchback), describe your ramp and pre-registration strategy including stopping rules and variance reduction, propose a quasi-experimental fallback if randomization isn't feasible, and debug a mid-test scenario where the OEC flatlines while add-to-cart rises and conversion drops.

“This was one giant prompt broken into five sub-parts and I did not pace myself well.”

Stripe software engineer interview with a coding question around join behavior. Not a lot of context in what I have to share but the core problem was interesting enough to write up.
  • Implement a join function that takes a boolean parameter: when true, it performs an inner join and drops unmatched rows; when false, it performs a left outer join and preserves all rows from the left (customer) side.

“The boolean flag part is what tripped me up at first.”
