Stripe·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Stripe coding screen, pretty focused on financial data processing. One problem, clean constraints, but the edge cases around zero balances are where they're really watching you.
  • Given a list of transactions in the format (account_id, timestamp, currency, amount), process them in chronological order and compute the final balance per (account_id, currency) pair. Exclude any pair with a final balance of exactly zero, and return the results sorted by account_id then currency.

“Jumped straight to a hash map keyed on (account_id, currency) and that part was fine.”

Interviewed for a software engineer role at Stripe and ran into a debugging question around CSV parsing that tripped me up more than I expected.
  • You're given a CSV parser that silently drops quotation marks from the output. How do you debug and fix it?

“Took me a minute to even reproduce it cleanly.”

Stripe·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
Stripe PM interview with a single open-ended strategy case. No behavioral stuff, just dropped straight into a scenario and expected you to run with it.
  • You're the CPO of a small brick-and-mortar supermarket chain with no online presence and revenues declining over the past several years. What do you do?

“I went straight for 'build an app' and immediately regretted it.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Stripe system design round for a software engineer role. The main problem was about role-based access control with hierarchical accounts, which sounds clean on paper but gets messy fast when you start thinking about scale.
  • You have a list of (userId, accountId, role) assignments and a tree of parent-child account relationships where roles inherit downward. Given a userId and accountId, return all effective roles that user has on that account, including inherited ones from ancestor accounts. Then discuss the tradeoffs between walking the ancestor chain at query time versus precomputing a rolled-up role table, and how hierarchy depth affects complexity.

“I started with the naive ancestor walk because it felt more intuitive to explain.”

Round 4 at Stripe for a software engineering role, behavioral focus with a hiring manager who kept steering things toward customer and client interactions. More project-heavy than I expected for a BQ round.
  • Walk me through a project you worked on and how you handled interactions with customers or clients throughout it.

“This came up a few times in different forms.”

Stripe·Data Scientist·Take-home Assignment

Jun 2026
Stripe take-home for a DS role. One week to build a purchase propensity model end-to-end, slides plus runnable code. The prompt was dense and clearly designed to see if you actually know ML in production, not just theory.
  • How would you define the prediction target and snapshot time to avoid label leakage, including late-arriving events?
  • What baseline and main model would you propose for purchase propensity, and how do you justify the choice between logistic regression and gradient-boosted trees?
  • Which metric would you optimize under class imbalance, PR-AUC or ROC-AUC, and what business metric would you report on the slides?
  • Describe a temporal cross-validation scheme that gives an honest performance estimate and explain how you'd tune hyperparameters quickly within the one-week time budget.
  • How would you detect and mitigate data leakage, target leakage, and train-test contamination? Give at least two concrete checks you would code.
  • What is your calibration plan, how would you select a threshold for an email targeting use-case with a cost per send, and how do you communicate this on slides?
  • What would your ablation plan look like if time runs short, and what are the 5 to 7 slide headlines that tell a compelling story to a hiring manager?

“This is the part I almost got wrong.”

Stripe·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Stripe DS interview, technical screen format, one big SQL problem that looked manageable until it really wasn't. The kind of question where you think you understand it and then re-read it three times and realize you missed half the requirements.
  • Given a merchant table and a transaction table, write a single SQL query to find the top 10 merchants who have no succeeded Subscription transactions in the last 180 days but show recurring payment behavior. Define a recurring customer as someone with at least two succeeded payments to the same merchant in that window, same amount and card fingerprint, with gaps between 28 and 35 days. Output includes merchant ID, recurring customer count, a repeat transaction rate for the last 30 days, first seen date, and a flag for whether they currently use subscriptions. Count each customer at most once, use window functions where appropriate.

“This wrecked me a little.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

Interviewed for an EM role at Stripe. Just one question to go off of here, but it was squarely focused on people development, which tracks for what I'd expect from their eng leadership bar.
  • How do you coach and develop the engineers on your team?

“I fumbled this a bit by jumping straight into a story about a struggling engineer I turned around.”

Stripe·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Stripe technical screen, probably for a backend or payments-adjacent engineering role. One coding problem, parsing and fee calculation from a CSV string. Pretty focused on edge case handling which caught me a bit off guard.
  • Given a CSV-formatted string of transactions with fields for transaction ID, amount, currency, and fee percentage, parse the input and compute the total fees collected. Each fee is amount times fee_pct divided by 100, rounded to two decimal places per transaction before summing. Handle malformed lines, extra whitespace, zero-amount rows, and rounding correctly.

“I got the happy path working pretty fast.”

Stripe system design round for a software engineer role. The problem was a feature flag system, which apparently gets asked enough that people on this forum have seen it before. Finished early, spent the last few minutes talking about culture, and the interviewer was pretty relaxed about the whole thing.
  • Design a feature flag system.

“Knew this one was floating around the forum so I'd seen rough outlines of it before.”
