TikTok DS interview, one big meaty question about marketplace trust and search ranking. The whole session was basically one extended case study and they went deep on every sub-part, so be ready to stay in one problem for a long time.
  • You want to downrank listings from suspected bad sellers in marketplace search results. Should you launch this? Walk through how you'd design the decision framework and the experiment end-to-end, covering treatment definition, randomization unit, metrics, ramp plan, model uncertainty, and heterogeneity checks.

“This was a lot.”

TikTok data scientist interview with a product experimentation question. Pretty focused session, just one meaty scenario about A/B testing a homepage feature. The kind of question that feels manageable until you realize how many layers they actually want you to cover.
  • The product team runs an A/B test adding a new recommendation carousel to the homepage. What primary and secondary metrics would you track, and how would you decide whether to ship it to everyone?

“I started with click-through rate as the primary metric which felt right, then conversion as secondary.”

PM interview at TikTok, one product analytics question about a DAU drop. Pretty standard diagnostic case but the pressure of it being TikTok specifically made me overthink the scope.
  • As a PM at TikTok, you've noticed a drop in daily active users. How do you investigate?

“I jumped straight to segmentation which felt right but I skipped the step of confirming the data is actually real first.”

TikTok SQL round for a software engineering role. One question, but it was basically five questions crammed into one monster query. Left feeling like I answered maybe 60% of it properly.
  • Given tables for users, orders, and events, write a single SQL query that returns per month and country: new user counts, 7-day post-signup conversion rate, 7-day rolling retention, GMV excluding refunded or canceled orders, and the top campaign by last-touch attribution. Also handle late-arriving events, deduplication on (uid, ts, event_type), timezone consistency, and explain your window function choices.

“I started with the GMV piece because that felt safest, then tried to bolt on the rest.”

TikTok ML Engineer interview with a coding round that leaned heavily on array problems. The subarray sum question came with follow-up variants that tested whether you actually understood the underlying mechanics or just memorized a solution.
  • Given an integer array and a target value k, count the total number of contiguous subarrays whose elements sum to k. Follow-ups: (a) simplify to returning a boolean for whether any such subarray exists, and (b) if all values are positive, can you solve it with O(1) extra space using a two-pointer approach?

“Knew the prefix sum trick going in so the base problem was fine.”

May 2026
TikTok data scientist interview with a SQL-heavy technical screen. The problem revolved around a user posting log and asked for registration dates, early engagement metrics, and retention math. Pretty classic analytics setup but the retention rate piece tripped me up a bit.
  • Given a user posting log table, write SQL to find each user's first posting date, compute how many posts they made within their first 7 days, and calculate the overall 7-day retention rate (the share of users who posted on day 7 or later).

“I started with a CTE to pull the min date per user, which felt right.”

System design round at TikTok for a software engineer role. The whole session was basically one big question about performance under load, which sounds manageable until you realize how many sub-topics they expect you to cover in one go.
  • How would you assess and improve a service's performance under high load? Cover SLIs/SLOs, instrumentation, load testing, likely bottlenecks, and concrete optimizations with trade-offs.

“This was a lot.”

TikTok PM interview with a system design question focused on building a RAG-based misinformation detection tool for content moderation. Pretty niche intersection of ML infrastructure and product thinking, which I wasn't fully expecting.
  • Design a Retrieval-Augmented Generation system to support TikTok's content moderation team in identifying and responding to misinformation.

“This one was harder to frame than I expected.”

May 2026
TikTok system design round for a software engineering role. The whole thing was one big open-ended question about building a privacy detection pipeline over a massive database, and it went deep fast. Walked away feeling like I covered maybe 60% of what they were actually looking for.
  • Design an end-to-end system to automatically detect and classify privacy-sensitive or PII data across a very large database with billions of rows, multiple schemas, and unstructured content like logs and messages. Your design should cover requirements, architecture, detection methods (rule-based, ML, LLM/RAG), scalability, evaluation, feedback loops, and any security concerns in the pipeline itself.

“This is a beast of a question.”

TikTok SWE interview with a classic array problem. Nothing too wild but it required knowing your two-pointer stuff cold.
  • Given an array of integers and a target sum, find three elements in the array that add up to that sum.

“I went straight for the brute force O(n^3) approach first which, in hindsight, was probably not the move for a TikTok screen.”
