Voleon·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Interviewed at Voleon for a software engineer role and got a sparse matrix problem that looked straightforward but had a few sharp edges around dimension validation and keeping things actually sparse. No fluff, just code.
  • Implement addition and multiplication for sparse matrices, with explicit error handling for incompatible dimensions. Dimensions can be up to 10^9, so dense storage is off the table.

“I went with a dict keyed by (row, col) for non-zero values which felt natural.”

Interviewed for a software engineering role at Voleon and got a recursive string validation problem that looked deceptively clean on the surface. The constraint to hit O(n) time pushed me to think carefully about how to parse without backtracking.
  • You're given a binary string made up of '0's and '1's. A valid string is defined recursively: '0' alone is valid, and '1' followed by two valid strings is also valid. Write a function that returns whether a given binary string matches this definition. Target O(n) time.

“My first instinct was a recursive parser and I actually think that's fine here since you can do it in a single left-to-right pass with no backtracking.”

Resume deep dive at Voleon Group for a data scientist role. The technical portion zeroed in on ML experience pretty fast, which I wasn't fully expecting given how conversational the start felt.
  • Do you have experience with statistics or machine learning? Walk me through a project where you applied ML techniques.

“I had a project ready but fumbled the structure a bit.”

Voleon·Data Scientist·Hiring Manager Screen

Apr 2026
A 45-minute chat with a current employee at Voleon Group for a Data Scientist role. Pretty much a résumé walkthrough with some probing questions about motivations and research background. Low pressure but you need to have your story straight.
  • Why are you interested in this role, and are you actively interviewing elsewhere?
  • What factors matter most to you when evaluating a new role? Are you only open to finance-adjacent work or are you considering other domains too?
  • Walk me through one of your research projects in detail.
  • Do you have any background in quantitative finance?

“The double-barrel nature of this tripped me up a little.”

Voleon SWE interview with a three-part trading simulation problem. The whole thing was one big coding question and it escalated pretty fast from a basic order book to a multi-client fairness allocator.
  • Design a minimal limit order book simulator for a single symbol that handles NEW and CANCEL events, matches orders by price then time priority, and outputs the list of trades generated by each event.
  • Given a stream of market prints representing executed market volume, implement an execution algorithm for a single client with a participation rate constraint, outputting how many shares to execute at each print without exceeding floor(p * cumulativeMarketVolume) at any point.
  • Extend the participation rate executor to handle multiple simultaneous clients, allocating available volume at each print fairly by prioritizing clients with the lowest ratio of executed quantity to total target quantity, with ties broken by client ID.

“The matching logic itself is not that bad once you commit to a structure.”

Voleon's quant screen was a multi-part gauntlet covering orthogonal regression, measurement error, and martingale stopping times. The math got pretty deep pretty fast and I don't think I fully nailed any of the three parts.
  • Derive the regression line that minimizes perpendicular distances to data points, and explain why this is equivalent to running PCA on the centered data.
  • If the predictor variable X is measured with additive noise, how does the OLS slope estimate behave? Derive the attenuation bias.
  • For a simple random walk, compute the expected value under various stopping rules and use martingale or optional stopping arguments to justify your answers.

“I knew orthogonal regression was a thing but had never actually written out the derivation on the spot.”

Voleon·Software Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

May 2026
Voleon quant onsite, multi-part technical loop. Heavy on ML fundamentals and linear algebra, the kind of interview where you can't just memorize a leetcode problem and call it a day. Left feeling like I held my own on most of it but definitely fumbled some of the theoretical depth they were probing for.
  • Explain the power method for finding leading eigenvectors, including how the algorithm works and why it converges.
  • Why does imposing sparsity constraints on PCA make the eigenvector problem significantly harder to solve?
  • Walk through the bias-variance trade-off across different model families including linear regression, ridge, lasso, kernel methods, and tree ensembles. When does each tend to minimize total error?
  • Solve a geometric interpretation problem involving linear regression, specifically around projection and orthogonal complements.

“I knew the basics: repeatedly multiply by the matrix and normalize.”

Interviewed for a software engineering role at Voleon and got a pretty meaty algorithmic problem involving a circular ring of balls and gates. The core challenge was figuring out how to answer queries efficiently when K can be astronomically large. Felt like a competitive programming problem dressed up in a physics costume.
  • You have a ring of N positions, each with a ball (white or black) and optionally a flip gate. Balls move clockwise each step, toggling color when crossing a gate. Given a potentially huge number of steps K, how many balls are white after exactly K steps? Design a preprocessing approach that answers each query in O(1).

“The naive simulation is obviously dead on arrival when K is huge.”

Voleon·Data Scientist·Take-home Assignment

May 2026
Take-home assignment for a Data Scientist role at Voleon Group, heavy on end-to-end ML pipeline work with a lot of moving parts crammed into one task. Felt more like a mini-project than a question.
  • Build a full scikit-learn pipeline to predict signups from ad spend, clicks, CPC, region, and a time trend derived from date. The pipeline should handle preprocessing (scaling numeric features, one-hot encoding region), optionally apply a log transform to the target based on a diagnostic check, add polynomial features, and tune Ridge, Lasso, and ElasticNet via GridSearchCV with nested cross-validation. Report RMSE and R-squared on a held-out test set, extract and rank the top 10 features by absolute standardized effect, save the model, and show reload/scoring code.

“This was a lot.”

Voleon·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
System design round at Voleon for an MLE role. The whole session was basically one big question about building a video recommendation pipeline from scratch, with a heavy focus on cold-start problems. Dense but interesting.
  • Design a video recommendation pipeline for a short-video platform that handles cold-start for both new users and new videos.
  • How would you handle candidate generation when a user has no interaction history at all?
  • Walk me through how you'd design the ranking layer, specifically what signals you'd use and how you'd handle multiple competing objectives.
  • How would you balance exploration versus exploitation in this recommendation system?
  • What metrics would you use to evaluate the recommendation system, both offline and online?
  • How would you serve this system in production with low latency given the complexity of the graph-based signals?

“This one is huge and I kept second-guessing where to start.”
