Walmart·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Walmart Labs for a backend role. One question, but it had enough moving parts to keep me busy for the whole session.
  • Design a taxi recommendation system for airport passengers that accounts for flight schedules, layovers, arrival airports, and departure locations.

“I went straight to the data model and kind of forgot to scope the problem first.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Interviewed at Walmart Labs for what seemed like a product or technical role touching adtech. Single question about platform features, not much else to go on.
  • What are the common features you'd expect to find in an adtech platform?

“I rambled through targeting, bidding, reporting, and attribution and it felt like I was just listing buzzwords.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

Apr 2026
Walmart Labs SWE interview, online assessment format. The coding problem was a twist on a classic subarray problem and I burned way too much time fighting the platform instead of actually solving the thing.
  • Given an array of integers, find the contiguous subarray with the maximum sum and return the start and end indices of that subarray.

“It's the classic max subarray problem but you also have to track where the subarray begins and ends, not just the sum.”

Walmart·Data Scientist·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Walmart Labs for a Data Scientist role, focused entirely on building an LLM-based interviewer agent. Pretty deep question that touched everything from prompt engineering to cost controls, so it wasn't a quick chat.
  • Design an LLM-based agent that can conduct technical and behavioral interviews. Walk through prompt design and persona, retrieval over question banks and rubrics, conversation state management, follow-up question generation, scoring and feedback mechanisms, evaluation strategy, and cost and latency tradeoffs.

“This is a big one and I underestimated how much ground it covers.”

Walmart·Data Analyst·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Walmart Labs data analyst interview with a classic business case format. The whole thing centered on diagnosing a metric drop, which sounds manageable until you're actually in it and realize how many directions the conversation can go.
  • A key business metric like conversion rate has suddenly shifted. Walk through how you'd investigate the cause, form hypotheses, validate them, and decide what to recommend.

“I started with funnel segmentation which was the right instinct, but I jumped to hypotheses way too fast before actually scoping whether the shift was real or a tracking artifact.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round at Walmart Labs for a software engineer role. Just one question but it took up most of the time, and it's the kind of question that sounds easy until you're actually in it trying to remember a real example that doesn't make you sound like a pushover.
  • Describe a situation where you got people to follow your recommendation without having any formal authority to make them do so. How did you build support, and what happened?

“This tripped me up more than I expected.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

Apr 2026
Took an online assessment for a 2027 internship and got absolutely cooked by two algorithmic problems. Not super confident with DSA to begin with, so this was a rough one.
  • Solve a problem requiring partition dynamic programming.
  • Solve a problem combining Dijkstra's algorithm, DFS, and backtracking.

“This one broke me a little.”

Walmart·Product Manager·Onsite - Cross-functional / Panel

Apr 2026
PM interview at Walmart Labs, one question about how you work with product marketing across the product lifecycle. Short and focused, felt more like a cross-functional alignment probe than a deep strategy discussion.
  • How do you collaborate with product marketing throughout the different stages of a product's lifecycle?

“I fumbled a bit here because I started too tactical, talking about launch briefs and positioning docs, and the interviewer clearly wanted something more end-to-end.”

Walmart·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Walmart Labs PM interview focused on a classic product sense exercise: pick something you use, break it down like a PM would. Structured but demanding, with follow-ups that pushed hard on prioritization and metrics.
  • Pick a product you personally use and evaluate it as a Product Manager. Who are the target users, what makes it strong, what would you improve, and how would you measure success after that improvement?
  • Why is the improvement you chose the highest-priority thing to work on right now?
  • Which user segment would you explicitly not optimize for first, and why?
  • What experiment would you run before doing a full launch of this improvement?
  • What metric or signal would make you roll back the change entirely?
  • How would your answer change if you were optimizing for a completely different user segment?

“This is the whole interview basically, wrapped in one prompt.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Walmart Labs adtech PM interview, one question about platform metrics. Not much else to go on but it was a meaty enough question that I spent most of the time just trying not to ramble.
  • What are the most important KPIs for an adtech platform, and what's the reasoning behind each one?

“I started with advertiser-side metrics like ROAS and CPM, then tried to cover publisher-side fill rate and eCPM.”
