Walmart·Software Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

Jul 2024
Applied for a fall internship, made it through an OA, a recruiter screen, a technical phone interview, and a full onsite with the team, then heard absolutely nothing for five weeks despite following up. The onsite felt fine, maybe even good, which makes the silence more annoying than an actual rejection would have been.
  • Walk me through your projects and explain the specific design or implementation choices you made.
  • Work through a system design problem with the interviewer.
  • Solve a medium-difficulty coding problem.

“This part actually felt comfortable.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Executive / Final Round

Sep 2024
Applied for a senior marketing manager role at a commercial real estate company, got a short recruiter screen that felt like a soft rejection, then somehow got called back for two more rounds with a director and an SVP. The director call went fine, but the SVP round was a weird 20-minute camera-off call where I mostly just talked about my background and left with zero sense of where I stood.
  • Can you walk me through your experience and professional background?

“This was basically the whole SVP call.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

Jan 2025
Cleared two OA rounds for a backend SDE role at a large MNC, then got ambushed in what was supposed to be a casual hiring manager compatibility chat that turned into a system design grilling and ended with both of us hanging up angry.
  • Walk me through your previous project and how you would improve its scalability.
  • Do you know what load balancers are and how they are used in a backend system?

“I had a pseudonymous social media project and talked through multithreading and a few other concurrency angles.”

Walmart·Data Analyst·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Walmart Labs data analyst interview, one round that was basically a giant open-ended case study. No clean answer exists for this kind of question, which is either exciting or terrifying depending on how you feel about ambiguity.
  • You're given a vague, loosely defined business problem. How do you scope it, decide what to measure, build a dataset to analyze it, and ultimately make a recommendation to stakeholders?

“This is the whole interview basically rolled into one question.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round at Walmart Labs for a software engineer position. Just one question but they really sat in it with you, lots of follow-ups.
  • Walk me through a time you resolved a production incident, including how you caught it, figured out the root cause, limited the damage, and what you did afterward to stop it from happening again.

“This one stretched longer than I expected.”

Walmart·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Walmart Labs. Just one question I can remember clearly, resource and funding stuff, felt like a strategy round more than anything else.
  • How would you go about securing resources or funding for a product you're working on?

“I fumbled the opening a bit.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
First technical screen for a senior backend role at a product-based company. It was a live code pair session and it did not go well. After a resume walkthrough, I got hit with a leetcode hard tree problem and basically froze.
  • Given a tree with node values, find the minimum possible score after removing two edges to split the tree into three components, where the score is defined as the difference between the maximum and minimum XOR values of the three subtrees.

“Couldn't even get a brute force sketch on the board.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Apr 2026
Third round interview, got a trie implementation question with about 20-25 minutes on the clock and completely fell apart. Knew the data structure, had used it before, just couldn't pull it together when it counted.
  • Implement a trie data structure from scratch.

“This is the one that got me and I still can't fully explain why.”

Walmart·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
PM interview at Walmart Labs with a product improvement question about walmart.com. Pretty standard for the role but still worth thinking through carefully before you walk in.
  • How would you improve walmart.com?

“I went straight to search and checkout flow because those felt safe, but looking back I think I played it too narrow.”

Walmart·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Walmart Labs coding screen for a software engineer role. Pretty standard DP question but the discussion around it went deeper than I expected.
  • Given an integer target amount and an array of distinct coin denominations with unlimited supply, return the number of distinct combinations (not permutations) of coins that sum to the target amount.

“I knew the 1D DP setup pretty well: dp[0] = 1, then for each coin iterate the amount forward and accumulate.”
