xAI·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at xAI for a software engineering role. One question, pretty open-ended, focused on task management with hierarchical sub-tasks. Not a lot of context given upfront so you kind of have to feel your way through the scope.
  • Design a task management system where tasks can be broken down into sub-tasks.

“I went straight to the data model and kind of forgot to clarify requirements first, which I noticed about five minutes in.”

Did a technical phone screen for a software engineer role at xAI. One coding problem, simulation-style, not super hard on the surface but the edge cases around concurrent orders and same-timestamp ordering tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Given a list of events where a delivery driver accepts and fulfills orders, calculate the driver's total pay. Pay is $0.30 per minute multiplied by the number of currently active orders, and events at the same timestamp must process all accepts before fulfills.

“I got the basic interval-sweep approach pretty quickly: sort events, track active order count, multiply duration by count by rate.”

xAI technical screen, systems-level stuff, basically a deep dive into how processes and threads work and what can go wrong when you share memory between them. felt like they wanted to see if you actually understood the tradeoffs or just memorized definitions.
  • What is the difference between a process and a thread, and which parts of memory do they share versus keep private?
  • What are the main risks that come with shared memory across threads, and what techniques do you use to mitigate them?

“I started with the textbook answer (separate address spaces for processes, shared heap for threads within the same process) and that landed fine.”

xAI·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jun 2026
xAI software engineer interview, coding round focused entirely on iterator design with stateful behavior. The problem sounds straightforward until you actually try to serialize mid-iteration state in a clean way.
  • Design and implement a stateful iterator over a sequence that supports saving a snapshot of its current position and restoring from that snapshot later, including after a process restart. The API should include next(), hasNext(), saveState(), and restoreFromState(snapshot).
  • Follow-up: how would you extend the iterator to support multiple independent consumers forking from the same saved state?

“The basic iterator was fine, took maybe five minutes.”

xAI ML Engineer interview with a pretty gnarly algorithmic puzzle about fault detection in a node graph. No behavioral stuff, just pure problem-solving under pressure. Left feeling like I'd gotten maybe 70% of the way there.
  • You have N nodes, each secretly either good or bad. You can call a test function on any subset of 2+ nodes that returns true only if every node in the subset is good. Tests within the same round must use disjoint sets of nodes. Design an algorithm to identify all bad nodes, and analyze its round and call complexity.

“This wrecked me a little.”

Screened for an AI-focused software engineering role at xAI. The technical screen was pretty much one big question about hallucination mitigation, but it branched into a bunch of follow-ups that exposed how shallow my initial answer was.
  • How would you prevent or significantly reduce hallucinations in an LLM-based system? Walk through causes and concrete mitigations across the full stack.
  • Your RAG system is still hallucinating even though you have retrieval in place. The model's answer contradicts the retrieved passages. What's going wrong and how do you fix it?
  • How would you build an automated evaluation pipeline to measure hallucination rate whenever the model or prompt changes, and what would you use as ground truth?
  • When should a model say 'I don't know,' and how do you actually get it to abstain reliably without making it refuse everything?
  • How do hallucination mitigations change when the system is an agent taking real actions like calling APIs or writing code, rather than just generating text?

“I jumped straight to RAG like it was a magic fix and the interviewer just waited.”

xAI·Backend Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Did a coding round for a Backend Engineer role at xAI centered entirely on designing an in-memory database from scratch. Four levels of increasing complexity, each one adding something that made the previous solution feel underbuilt. Rough but interesting problem.
  • Implement basic get, set, and delete operations for an in-memory key-value store where each key holds multiple field-value pairs.
  • Add scan and scan_by_prefix operations that return all fields for a key sorted lexicographically, formatted as field(value) strings.
  • Extend all operations to accept an explicit timestamp, and add a set operation that assigns a TTL so fields expire after a given interval.
  • Implement backup and restore functionality: backup saves the full database state at a given timestamp including remaining TTLs, and restore rolls back to the most recent backup at or before a specified time while correctly recalculating TTL expiration.

“Felt straightforward at first.”

Interviewed for a software engineer role at xAI and got a pretty deep dive into arrays, way more than I expected for what I thought would be a warmup question.
  • What is an array, how is it laid out in memory, and what are the time complexities for access, insertion, and deletion? Also, what are the cache locality implications of that memory layout?

“Started fine, explained contiguous memory and index arithmetic (base + i * element_size), but then they pushed on alignment and I fumbled a bit.”

Interviewed for an ML Engineer role at xAI and got hit with a pretty deep systems question about concurrency. Not the most ML-specific thing I expected but it makes sense given the infrastructure work they do.
  • Walk me through the differences between multiprocessing and multithreading for building concurrent applications, covering memory isolation, communication patterns, performance trade-offs for CPU vs I/O workloads, and failure containment. Give examples of when you'd actually pick one over the other.

“This was broader than I expected.”

xAI software engineering interview with a thread safety debugging question. Pretty focused technical session, one meaty problem and a lot of follow-up probing around the edges.
  • You have a BankAccount class used by multiple threads simultaneously. Two deposits are submitted concurrently via a thread pool. Given the deposit implementation reads the balance, sleeps briefly, then writes back, explain why the final balance can be wrong, identify the concurrency bug, propose a thread-safe fix, and discuss any trade-offs or alternative approaches.

“I spotted the race condition pretty fast, the read-modify-write gap with the sleep in between is basically a neon sign.”
