Yahoo·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Sep 2025
Yahoo DS interview with a meaty product analytics case about a DAU drop in Yahoo Mail. Single question but they clearly wanted to see the full investigation playbook, from data validation all the way through causal testing and alerting. Pretty intense for what felt like a mid-loop technical screen.
  • Yahoo Mail's DAU dropped 10% compared to the prior 7-day baseline. You're the on-call analyst. Walk through your full investigation: how do you verify the drop is real, isolate the cause using a metric tree and segmentation, run SQL or Python checks to find the top contributing segments, design a causal test to validate your hypothesis, and then recommend mitigations and a monitoring plan with rollback criteria. What do you do in the first two hours?

“This was a lot.”

Yahoo·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Interviewed at Yahoo for what felt like a product strategy role, got hit with a pretty meaty monetization question about Tumblr. Not a lot of context given upfront, so you're kind of just thrown in.
  • How would you close the gap between Tumblr's heavy mobile usage and its relatively weak monetization?

“I fumbled the opening a bit because I went straight into ad formats without first establishing why mobile was even a problem for monetization specifically.”

Yahoo·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Short product interview at Yahoo, basically just two questions that build on each other. Nothing too intense but you need to actually know their products.
  • What is your favorite Yahoo product and how would you improve it?
  • How would you partner with other Yahoo products to make your chosen product even better?

“I picked Yahoo Finance because I actually use it.”

May 2026
Yahoo DS interview with a meaty A/B testing design question around a new recommendation widget. The whole round was basically one big scenario unpacked into several sub-questions, which felt more like a product analytics case than a typical stats quiz.
  • Design an A/B experiment to measure the impact of a new in-app recommendation widget on daily active users and session length. Walk through your choice of primary and guardrail metrics, how you'd size the experiment, and what biases or pitfalls you'd watch out for.

“This is a lot of question crammed into one prompt and I didn't pace myself well.”

Yahoo·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Prepped for a Yahoo ML Engineer role and ran into a behavioral question that felt simple but took more thought than expected.
  • How would your manager describe you?

“I knew this type of question was coming and still fumbled the delivery a bit.”

Yahoo·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Interviewed for a frontend engineer role at Yahoo and got hit with a classic dynamic programming problem. Nothing too wild but it definitely required some thinking on the spot.
  • Given an array of integers, find the maximum sum of a subsequence where no two selected elements are adjacent.

“I knew this was a DP problem pretty quickly but fumbled the base cases at first.”

Yahoo·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Yahoo Data Scientist interview that was basically a graph theory problem dressed up as a string puzzle. Took me a while to even see what they were going for, and the implementation details got messy fast.
  • Given a list of lowercase words, merge them into one string by chaining words where the last character of the current string matches the first character of the next word, without duplicating the shared character. You can reorder words freely. Return any valid merged string using all words exactly once, or 'IMPOSSIBLE' if none exists. How would you design a near-linear time algorithm for this, and how do you handle edge cases like self-loops and disconnected components?

“I stared at the examples for longer than I should have before I realized this is just an Eulerian path problem on a 26-node directed graph where each word is an edge from its first letter to its last.”

Interviewed for a SWE role at Yahoo and got asked a pretty standard OOP question. Nothing too wild, felt like a warmup more than a real technical deep dive.
  • What is Object Oriented Programming (OOP)?

“Gave the usual rundown of encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction.”

Jun 2026
Interviewed at Yahoo, question was about Android's strategic value to Google. Short and ambiguous, not much else to go on.
  • Why is Android strategically important to Google?

“This is a classic product strategy question that sounds straightforward until you actually try to structure an answer under pressure.”

Yahoo·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral screen for an MLE role on Yahoo's news product. Two questions, both pretty standard, but the project deep-dive had more layers than I expected.
  • Walk me through your background and one project from your resume in detail, covering the goal, your specific role, the technical architecture, trade-offs you made, a hard problem you solved, and the measurable outcome.
  • How would your manager describe you? Give two strengths with a specific example for each.

“The part that tripped me up was the trade-offs section.”
