Amazon·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

May 2026
Took the Amazon SDE Intern online assessment, two questions total. First one went clean, second one had a rough ending thanks to a last-second syntax error and a submission timeout popup. Now just waiting and hoping for the best.
  • Standard algorithmic coding problem (first question in the OA).
  • Backend debugging task: given a broken codebase, identify and fix specific errors to make the test cases pass (second question in the OA).

“Passed all 15 test cases, nothing too wild.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
System design round at Amazon for an embedded software role, which felt a bit odd given the locker problem was pretty classic backend territory. The question had enough moving parts to keep me busy the whole session.
  • Design a storage locker system that can store and retrieve items across multiple locker sizes (small, medium, large). The system should assign the smallest available locker that fits a given item, and return an error if no suitable locker exists. Cover the data model, store/retrieve APIs, allocation strategy, concurrency handling, and how you'd scale it.

“I started with the data model and that went fine, basically a locker table with size enum, status, and a foreign key to whatever item is currently stored.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Product analyst interview at Amazon with a metrics-focused question about measuring engagement for a productivity app. Pretty standard for this type of role but it pushed me to think more carefully about what engagement actually means in a productivity context versus something like a social app.
  • How would you measure engagement for a productivity app, and what specific features or behaviors would you track?

“My first instinct was to rattle off DAU/MAU and call it a day, which would have been a disaster.”

Amazon·Technical Program Manager·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
TPM screen at Amazon, just one question about a current project. Pretty short and left me wondering if they were testing how I structure my thinking under pressure or just warming up.
  • Walk me through a system you are currently working on.

“I rambled a bit at first because I wasn't sure how deep to go.”

Amazon·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Amazon Data Scientist interview with a SQL-heavy question around global HR reporting. One question, pretty focused on combining data across tables and doing currency conversion before ranking.
  • You have separate employee tables for multiple countries, each with local salary data, and a currency-to-USD exchange rate table. How would you consolidate all the employee records into one global table and return the top 10 highest-paid employees worldwide in USD?

“The UNION ALL part I got immediately, that's just stacking tables.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Amazon Data Engineer interview that started with the usual self-intro before pivoting hard into whatever protocol you happened to list on your resume. The depth they expected was no joke, full message flow, trade-offs, alternatives, the works.
  • Pick a protocol from your resume. Explain what it is, what problem it solves, how it works end-to-end, what your specific role was in building or using it, and what trade-offs or pitfalls you ran into. Be ready to walk through the message flow and compare it against alternatives.

“This is the kind of question that sounds manageable until you're actually in it.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

May 2026
Amazon SWE online assessment, one algorithmic problem that looked approachable until it really wasn't. The block-prefix counting thing had enough layers that I kept second-guessing my own setup before even touching the main loop.
  • For every prefix of a given lowercase string, find the maximum number of equal-length contiguous blocks the prefix can be split into such that each character appears with the same frequency in every block.

“The gcd angle clicked pretty fast but I underestimated how much work comes after that.”

Amazon SWE online assessment with a simulation/greedy problem about printer scheduling. The problem looked deceptively like a sorting question but the activation order logic made it way trickier than expected.
  • You have a list of printers, each with a pages value and a threshold value. Printers start idle and get activated one at a time. Once at least x printers are operational, any printer with threshold below x gets suspended and stops printing. Figure out the optimal activation order to maximize total pages printed before suspensions kick in.

“Spent way too long trying to brute-force the activation order before realizing the key insight: you want to delay triggering suspension thresholds for as long as possible, which means being careful about which printer you activate next.”

Amazon SWE coding round, basically just one problem on topological sort and cycle detection. Nothing too wild but you need to know your graph fundamentals cold.
  • Given n tasks and a list of dependency pairs, determine whether all tasks can be completed without a cycle. Output YES if a valid ordering exists, NO if there's a cycle.

“Classic course schedule / topological sort problem dressed up as task dependencies.”

Amazon·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Amazon PM interview with a product strategy question about expanding Hoop into South America. Short session, single question, not much else to report.
  • How would you approach expanding Hoop into the South American market?

“I went straight into market sizing and user needs, which felt right in the moment but I skipped over the competitive landscape almost entirely.”
