FAANG / Big Tech

Most of these Apple write-ups come from Software Engineers (212), then Machine Learning Engineers (85) and Data Scientists (32). The most reported rounds are the technical phone screen (217), the system design round (48), the product sense round (29) and the behavioral / leadership round (22).

Apple·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Apple ML Engineer system design round, one big open-ended question about building a multimodal RAG system from scratch. Pretty brutal scope for a single session but also kind of interesting if you're into this stuff.
  • Design a retrieval-augmented generation system that answers user questions from a knowledge base containing multiple modalities including text documents, PDFs, and images. Cover ingestion, indexing, retrieval, chunking, embeddings, re-ranking, answer grounding with citations, evaluation, and failure modes.

“This thing had like seven sub-parts and I didn't realize until I was already 10 minutes in talking about chunking strategy that I hadn't even touched ingestion.”

Apple ML engineer interview that went deep on loss functions for super-resolution. One question but it had three layers to it, which I wasn't fully prepared for. The technical bar felt high and the conversation moved fast.
  • In a super-resolution setting, compare pixel-wise L2 loss against perceptual loss (feature-space loss via a pretrained network). Which one tends to produce blurry outputs and why? How does perceptual loss preserve textures and edges? And when would you combine both along with an adversarial loss?

“I got the first part fine.”

Apple·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apple system design interview for a data engineering role. One big open-ended question about building a real-time analytics platform for live streaming, latency was the whole point of the conversation.
  • Design a real-time analytics system for a live streaming platform that handles viewer counts, chat volume, and similar metrics, with ultra-low latency as the primary constraint.

“This is the kind of question where you think you know where to start and then realize halfway through that latency changes almost every decision.”

Apple·Software Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

Jun 2026
Spent the better part of a year grinding final rounds at Apple, Wayfair, and Expedia among others, converting zero of them. Coding feedback was consistently fine, system design felt solid, but kept getting edged out at the committee stage. At this point I'm genuinely not sure if it's my background, my behavioral depth, or just bad luck against candidates with bigger names on their resumes.
  • Design a large-scale distributed system from scratch, including follow-up questions on tradeoffs and edge cases.
  • Implement a solution to an algorithmic problem at a hard difficulty level under time pressure.
  • Walk me through how you would implement cursor-based pagination and why you'd choose it over other approaches.
  • Tell me about a project where you had to handle significant scale or high traffic, and how you approached it.
  • Design an object-oriented system for a given problem, implementing it in code with correct structure and class relationships.
  • Walk through a frontend feature implementation, explaining your technical decisions and the tradeoffs you made.
  • Tell me about a project or technical decision you're proud of and explain why it was meaningful.

“Did two of these back to back in the Apple finals, which I did not expect.”

Apple frontend interview that leaned heavy on React internals. One question but it had real depth to it, and I came out feeling like I'd both nailed it and missed something at the same time.
  • How does the Virtual DOM work in React, and what advantages does it provide?

“I covered the declarative model pretty well, explained that you just describe what the UI should look like for a given state and React figures out the diff.”

Apple SWE interview, got a classic binary search variant. Not a lot of context to share but the problem itself was enough to keep me busy.
  • Given a sorted array that has been rotated at some unknown pivot, search for a target value and return its index.

“I knew this problem but still fumbled the edge cases mid-implementation.”

Apple·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Went through a behavioral-heavy round for a software engineer role at Apple. Four questions, all pretty open-ended, covering feedback, ML experience, how you pick up new tech, and your reasons for leaving. Nothing too surprising but the AI/ML one caught me a little flat-footed.
  • Tell me about a time you received critical feedback from a peer or manager. What was the feedback and what did you actually change because of it?
  • Walk me through an AI or ML project you worked on. What was your specific role, what problem were you solving, what approach did you take, and what was the measurable impact?
  • How do you approach learning a technology you've never used before? Walk me through your process and give a concrete example.
  • What was the hardest part of your most recent project, and separately, why are you looking to make a move right now?

“I had a decent story here but I rambled into too much backstory before getting to the change part.”

Apple system design round for a software engineering role. The main problem was building a versioned key-value store with snapshot support, and they pushed pretty hard on the efficiency angle once you got the basic structure down.
  • Design and implement a key-value map that supports set, get, snapshot, and get-at-snapshot operations, where snapshots must be space-efficient and writes after a snapshot cannot affect earlier snapshot reads.

“The basic structure came to me fast: per-key versioned logs with binary search on snapshot IDs.”

Apple·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
Apple PM interview, just the one question about a hard product problem. Pretty open-ended and I wasn't totally sure how deep they wanted me to go.
  • Tell me about a challenging product problem you encountered and how you resolved it.

“I picked a story I'd told before but fumbled the middle part where I had to explain the actual decision-making.”

Growth analytics interview at Meta focused on Instagram monetization. The whole thing revolved around one big multi-part case: funnel analysis, experiment ideation, and metric trade-off reasoning. Pretty demanding for a single question but it covered a lot of ground.
  • If the goal is to increase purchase volume on Instagram, what data would you look at first and why, and what product or experiment ideas would you propose to actually move that number?
  • After launching a feature meant to boost purchases, you notice a separate key metric has declined. How do you figure out what's going on and decide whether to roll back, keep going, or iterate?

“I started with the funnel, which felt right, but I spent too long on the top of it and the interviewer kept nudging me toward checkout drop-off specifically.”
