DoorDash·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
DoorDash DS interview that went deep into launch metrics and experimentation design. The question was essentially one long case but it covered a lot of ground, so be ready to stay organized under pressure.
  • DoorDash is launching in a new city. Define success metrics and guardrails for three phases: pre-launch readiness, soft launch, and full ramp. For each phase, specify core metrics with precise definitions, distinguish leading indicators from outcome metrics, and set guardrail thresholds that would trigger a rollback or pause.
  • Design a geo-based A/B or staggered rollout to estimate the causal impact of the city launch on orders and ETAs. Address seasonality, matched-control zone selection, spillover effects across adjacent zones, novelty effects, and minimum detectable effect assumptions. What decision rules would you present to leadership after two weeks?

“The three-phase structure sounds clean until you're actually in it and realize pre-launch has almost no live data to work with.”

DoorDash data analyst interview with a product metrics question about bikes as a Dasher transport option. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • If DoorDash introduced bikes as a transportation option for Dashers, what metric would you use to measure whether the launch was successful?

“I went straight to delivery time and they pushed back almost immediately, asking why not something else.”

DoorDash·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral loop for an EM role at DoorDash, all five questions were people management focused. Nothing too surprising but you really need concrete stories ready, vague answers won't cut it here.
  • Tell me about a time you led a team or sub-team through a difficult project.
  • How have you handled a team member who wasn't meeting expectations?
  • Describe a tough call you had to make as a leader, like cutting scope, restructuring, or a hiring or firing decision.
  • Walk me through how you set goals, track progress, and give feedback to your team.
  • Tell me about a time you helped someone on your team grow significantly.

“This was the opener and I felt pretty good about my answer, had a solid story about a migration that nearly blew up.”

DoorDash·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
System design round at DoorDash for a software engineering role. The problem was a notification platform at scale, which sounds manageable until you realize how many moving pieces they actually want you to cover in 45 minutes.
  • Design a notification system that receives alert events from internal services and delivers them to subscribed users across multiple channels like push, email, and SMS.
  • How would you handle reliability concerns like retries, dead-letter queues, and idempotency in the notification pipeline?
  • How would you enforce rate limiting and respect user preferences such as opt-outs and quiet hours?
  • What observability and operational tooling would you build into this system?

“This is a big one.”

DoorDash DS interview focused on a logistics metric degradation case. The whole thing was a structured diagnostic exercise around dasher wait times, and they pushed hard on follow-ups once you gave an initial answer. Pretty intense for what looked like a standard product analytics question on the surface.
  • Average dasher wait time at the store has gone up over the past week or two. Walk me through how you'd diagnose what's causing it.
  • How would you tell apart a real merchant prep problem from a data instrumentation issue?
  • A handful of high-volume merchants are driving most of the increase. What do you do with that?
  • What guardrail metric would you use to protect dasher earnings when testing a fix?
  • Walk me through how you'd design an experiment to test a new dispatch timing model.
  • Before diving into hypotheses, what clarifying questions would you ask to scope the problem?

“This is the main question and it's deceptively broad.”

DoorDash·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
DoorDash data science technical screen, all SQL, four questions back to back with increasingly brutal edge cases. The schema wasn't complicated but the questions had enough gotchas baked in that I was second-guessing myself the whole time.
  • Write a query to compute a 7-day rolling count of distinct active users per platform, for each calendar day in a given date range. Days with no activity for a platform should still appear with a zero count.
  • For each product category, find the top 3 products by revenue over the last 30 days, excluding cancelled orders. Break ties by product_id ascending and output rank, revenue, category, and product_id.
  • For each user, calculate the length of their current consecutive daily login streak ending on or before a fixed reference date. A day counts if they logged in at least once.
  • Identify users whose second non-cancelled order happened within 90 days of their signup date and whose second order's gross value was at least 1.5 times the first order's gross value. Output both order IDs, amounts, and days between them.

“The zero-filling part is what got me.”

DoorDash DS interview, one big meaty experiment design question that covered basically every angle you can think of. Felt like a take-home disguised as a live question. Walked away not totally sure if I nailed it or just sounded like I knew what I was talking about.
  • DoorDash is testing a new batching policy where a dasher can pick up two nearby orders in one trip during peak hours. Design a full experiment to measure causal impact on order conversion rate, ETA accuracy, dasher hourly earnings, and restaurant prep-time congestion. Cover your randomization unit, stratification, sample size, novelty effects, heterogeneous treatment effects, and your decision rule when guardrails and primary metrics point in opposite directions.

“This was a lot.”

Interviewed for a PM role at DoorDash, basically just one question about motivation to join the company.
  • Why do you want to work at DoorDash?

“Pretty standard opener.”

DoorDash·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
System design round at DoorDash, one big sprawling question about building a donations platform for a global fundraising campaign. Took up the full hour and then some, lots of follow-ups branching in every direction.
  • Design a donations platform for a three-day global fundraising campaign, covering the full stack: APIs, data model, payment idempotency, real-time leaderboards, fraud checks, rate limiting, backpressure, delayed webhooks, regional availability, storage and partitioning, caching, streaming analytics, observability, and failure handling.
  • How would you handle payment provider outages and double-submit scenarios in this system?
  • Walk me through your partitioning and storage strategy for this platform at scale.
  • How would you design real-time running totals and a leaderboard given high write throughput during a campaign spike?

“This was basically every system design topic crammed into one question.”

May 2026
DoorDash system design round, got asked to build a charity donation platform from scratch. Pretty broad scope and I kept second-guessing how deep to go on the payments side versus the product layer.
  • Design a charity and donation platform where users can browse campaigns, donate one-time or on a recurring basis, receive receipts, track campaign progress, and where charities can receive payouts.
  • How would you handle correctness of financial calculations and ensure money math doesn't introduce rounding errors across the donation ledger?
  • Walk through how you'd design the payout flow to transfer collected donations to the charities.
  • How would your architecture handle sudden traffic spikes, like when a campaign goes viral?
  • What analytics would you build around donation flows and how would you model that data?

“This one sprawled fast.”
