Dropbox·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Dropbox system design round focused entirely on building a high-throughput log writer service. Pretty deep dive, they wanted specifics on almost every layer of the stack and kept pushing on tradeoffs rather than letting me hand-wave anything.
  • Design a log writer system that buffers log records from many producers and writes them durably to local disk and/or a remote log store at high throughput. Cover the API design, in-memory buffering and batching, flush policies, durability guarantees, backpressure, ordering, multi-process/thread safety, log rotation, and how it fits into a distributed pipeline like Kafka or fluentd.

“This is a beast of a question and I underestimated how many rabbit holes they'd want to go down.”

Interviewed at Dropbox for what seemed like a PM or program management role. One question about project planning, not much else to go on.
  • How do you create a project plan?

“Pretty broad question and I kind of rambled through it.”

Dropbox coding screen for a software engineer role. The problem was a hangman-style game implementation, which sounds straightforward but has enough moving parts to trip you up if you're not careful about how you model state.
  • Implement a word-guessing game where one player picks a secret word and the other guesses letters one at a time. Each guess is either a hit (reveal all positions of that letter in the word) or a miss (add the letter to a misses list). Design the game state and a guess(letter) API.

“The example walkthrough they did at the start was actually helpful for pinning down the exact behavior.”

Dropbox software engineer interview with a coding round focused on building a small in-memory banking system from scratch. Pretty straightforward on the surface but the edge cases piled up fast.
  • Design and implement a basic in-memory bank system that supports creating accounts, depositing money, and transferring funds between accounts. The system should reject operations on accounts that don't exist and transfers where the source account has insufficient funds.

“Started confident, wrote createAccount and deposit pretty quickly.”

Dropbox system design round, one big question about building an object storage service from scratch at S3 scale. Went deep on a lot of subsystems and honestly felt like the interview could've gone on for another hour.
  • Design a large-scale object storage service similar to Amazon S3, supporting PUT, GET, DELETE, and LIST operations on buckets and objects, with objects ranging from a few KB to multiple terabytes.
  • How would you handle metadata storage and partitioning for trillions of objects across a distributed system?
  • What approach would you take to achieve eleven nines of durability for stored data?
  • Walk me through how multipart upload would work for very large objects, including how you'd handle failures mid-upload.
  • How would you design access control for objects and buckets, including both authentication and authorization?
  • How would you handle caching and CDN integration for frequently accessed objects, including hot-key scenarios?

“This question is massive and I underestimated how much ground they'd want to cover.”

Dropbox software engineer interview that came down to a single recursive tree problem. The Fibonacci tree construction wasn't something I'd seen framed exactly this way before, and the follow-up questions on complexity kept coming after I thought I was done.
  • Implement a Fibonacci tree structure recursively, where T(0) and T(1) are single nodes and T(n) has T(n-1) as its left subtree and T(n-2) as its right subtree. Then discuss the size, height, leaf vs internal node counts, and time/space complexity of your construction.

“The construction itself clicked pretty fast once I drew it out.”

Dropbox software engineering interview focused on designing an in-memory key-value store from scratch. The question started simple but kept expanding into concurrency, eviction, and persistence territory, which I wasn't fully ready for.
  • Design and implement an in-memory key-value store with put, get, and delete operations.
  • What data structure would you use under the hood, and how would your answer change if range queries were required?
  • How would you make the key-value store thread-safe under concurrent reads and writes?
  • How would you extend the store to support TTL-based key expiration, LRU or LFU eviction, and optional persistence to disk?

“Started fine, hash map, O(1) average case, talked through collision handling and load factor resizing.”

Dropbox system design round, one question the whole time: implement a thread-safe token bucket rate limiter. More depth expected than I anticipated, they really wanted to dig into the concurrency angle.
  • Design and implement a thread-safe Token Bucket rate limiter that supports concurrent access from multiple clients. Walk through the API, how tokens refill lazily over time, and the trade-offs versus other rate limiting approaches.

“I started with the basic struct and got the lazy refill math right pretty quickly (elapsed time times rate, capped at capacity).”

Short PM screen at Dropbox, basically one market sizing question about the SMB segment. Not much to report.
  • How large is the market opportunity for Dropbox targeting small and medium-sized businesses?

“Market sizing for a product you actually use feels easier than it is.”

Dropbox·Software Engineer·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Product sense interview at Dropbox where the main question was about measuring Airtable's success from a Head of Product perspective. Pretty open-ended, not a lot of structure given upfront.
  • If you were the Head of Product at Airtable, what metrics would you track to determine whether the company is on a path to success?

“This one is broader than it sounds.”
