Google·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Interviewed at Google for a product role and got hit with a music-focused product design question. Pretty classic Google PM territory but I underestimated how deep they wanted me to go.
  • How would you improve the music listening experience on YouTube?

“I went straight to the obvious stuff, background play, better queue management, and they just kind of nodded and waited.”

Google·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Interviewed at Google for what seemed like a backend or software engineering role, with a question centered around designing a game leaderboard. Not much else to go on from what I can piece together.
  • Design a game leaderboard system.

“Classic system design prompt but there's a lot hiding under the surface.”

Google PM interview with a product sense question centered on Google Docs. Pretty short prompt but a lot of depth expected underneath it.
  • How would you approach version control in Google Docs? Walk through your thinking on the product design.

“I kind of assumed they wanted me to describe what already exists and then improve on it, but I think that was the wrong instinct.”

Interviewed at Google for a product strategy role, got a competitive analysis question about Microsoft launching into mobile. Pretty thin on context from the interviewer, which made it tricky to know how deep to go.
  • What strategy could Microsoft use to successfully launch a new mobile phone?

“I went straight to ecosystem lock-in since Microsoft has enterprise software everywhere, figured that was the angle.”

Got a product design question at Google that sounds deceptively simple until you actually try to answer it. One question, open-ended, and I felt like I was winging it the whole time.
  • How would you design a mobile phone specifically for elderly users?

“I jumped straight into features like bigger fonts and louder volume, which felt embarrassingly surface-level the moment I said it out loud.”

Google SWE interview with a tricky interactive search problem. The core challenge was figuring out a strategy to find a secret word using at most 10 API calls, which sounds manageable until you actually sit down and think about worst-case pruning.
  • You have a list of unique same-length words and a hidden secret word. You can call an API that tells you how many character positions your guess matches the secret word exactly. Using at most 10 calls, find the secret word. Every guess must come from the word list.

“I spent the first few minutes just staring at it.”

Google SWE interview with a grid partitioning problem that looked straightforward until you actually had to think about the edge cases and complexity tradeoffs. One question, but it had enough layers to keep you busy for a while.
  • You have a 2D grid of numbers. Divide it into non-overlapping 3x3 blocks. Each block's representative is its minimum value, but any block containing a 1 is invalid and gets skipped. Find the smallest representative among all valid blocks and return it along with the block's position.

“My first instinct was to just iterate over all blocks, track the min per block, check for the value 1, and keep a running global min.”

Google·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Interviewed for a software engineer role at Google, and the main thing they wanted to dig into was how my core strengths actually translate to real work situations.
  • How does your strongest professional ability help you perform well in a work environment?

“I rambled a bit trying to pick which skill to even talk about, which probably wasn't a great look.”

Google PM interview with a hardware product design question. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for coming from a software product background.
  • How would you design a garage door opener?

“My first instinct was to jump straight into features, which was probably the wrong move.”

Google SWE coding round, one question on grid traversal. Pretty standard stuff but I fumbled the edge cases more than I'd like to admit.
  • Given a 2D binary grid representing a map of land ('1') and water ('0'), count the number of islands, where an island is a group of adjacent land cells connected horizontally or vertically.

“I went straight to BFS which felt right, but spent too long second-guessing whether to use DFS instead.”
