Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Meta SWE coding round with a maze pathfinding problem that had a twist I did not see coming. The bomb mechanic made it way more interesting than a standard BFS grid question.
  • Given a grid maze with start, end, wall, empty, and bomb cells, find the shortest path from start to end using 4-directional movement. Stepping on a bomb destroys all walls within Manhattan distance 2 from it. Return the minimum steps or -1 if unreachable.

“My first instinct was plain BFS and I started coding it before really thinking about state.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

PM interview at Meta, just the one question about Facebook Live. Short and focused, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's easy to answer well.
  • How would you measure the success of Facebook Live?

“I went straight for engagement metrics and kind of lost the thread.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Meta for a software engineer role, three prompts in about 15 minutes. Pretty standard stuff but the PM alignment question tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Describe the most difficult project you've worked on, covering scale, technical complexity, team dynamics, and your personal ownership.
  • Tell me about a conflict you had with a teammate or partner team. How did you handle it and what happened?
  • Walk me through a time you worked closely with a Product Manager. How did you handle disagreements on scope, timelines, or success metrics?

“I had a story ready but I fumbled the scale part.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Meta SWE coding round, got a interval merging problem that looked straightforward but had a few edge cases that tripped me up a bit.
  • Given two separately sorted lists of intervals, merge them into a single list with no overlapping intervals.

“My first instinct was to just concatenate both lists and run a standard merge intervals pass on the combined result.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Meta SWE coding question, pretty focused on arrays and duplicate detection. Nothing crazy in terms of scope but the constraints made it more interesting than it first looked.
  • Given an unsorted array, find all duplicate elements in O(1) space and without using any built-in language functions.

“The O(1) space constraint is what makes this annoying.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Product sense round at Meta for a PM role, focused on Reality Labs and the emerging VR/AR space. The question was a design challenge around using immersive tech to teach physical, hands-on skills. Pretty open-ended and I wasn't totally sure where to take it.
  • Design a virtual learning experience for Meta Reality Labs that teaches hands-on physical skills such as pottery or welding.

“I spent the first couple minutes just trying to figure out what angle to take.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
PM interview at Meta with a product sense question focused on local awareness ads. Short and punchy session, just the one question but it had a lot of surface area to cover.
  • How would you define success for Meta's local awareness ads product?

“I went straight to business metrics, advertiser ROI, foot traffic lift, that kind of thing, and kind of glossed over the user side.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Product design question for an EM role at Meta. Just the one question but it had enough surface area to go in a lot of directions, which made it weirdly harder than expected.
  • How would you design a 'Hot Topics' feature for Instagram?

“I went straight to the feed ranking angle and spent too long there before realizing they probably wanted me to think about the full feature, discovery surfaces, content aggregation, moderation considerations.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Meta SWE coding round, just the one array manipulation problem but they pushed hard on the space complexity angle. Pretty standard vibe but the follow-up constraint is where it gets interesting.
  • Given an integer array, rotate it to the right by k positions. Follow-up: can you do it in O(1) extra space?

“My first instinct was to just slice and concatenate which works fine but uses extra space.”

Meta·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Three coding questions for a Meta MLE role. Nothing behavioral, just back-to-back algorithms. The problems were harder than I expected for a phone screen, especially the first one.
  • Given an array of integers that may have duplicates, return the second-largest distinct permutation in lexicographic order.
  • You have m sorted arrays. Return the first k elements in globally sorted order, preserving duplicates.
  • Given a list of words, find a subset whose concatenation uses each character at most once, maximizing the number of unique characters. How does your approach scale to thousands of words?

“This one took me a minute to even parse.”
