Meta coding screen, tree problem, pretty standard stuff but recursive thinking under pressure is a different beast than doing it at home.
  • Given two binary trees, merge them so that overlapping nodes are summed and non-overlapping nodes are kept as-is. Return the resulting tree.

“My first instinct was to iterate but recursion is just cleaner here.”

Meta SWE coding round with a maze pathfinding problem that added a twist I wasn't fully prepared for. The core BFS logic wasn't the hard part, it was correctly wiring in the directional cell constraints without breaking existing movement rules.
  • You have a maze grid with standard movement rules. Now add two special one-way cell types: one that can only be entered moving left-to-right, and one that can only be entered moving right-to-left. Modify the existing move validation logic so BFS pathfinding correctly respects these constraints and passes unit tests. Grid size up to 200x200, four-directional movement.

“My first instinct was to just bolt the directional check onto the existing canMove function, but I kept second-guessing myself on which direction counts as 'entering' versus 'leaving'.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

PM interview at Meta with a single product strategy question about pandemic preparedness. Not a lot of context to go on, but it's the kind of open-ended policy-meets-product question that can spiral fast if you're not careful.
  • How could Facebook improve its preparedness for the next pandemic?

“This one is deceptively broad.”

Meta coding screen for a software engineer role, basically one array problem with a couple follow-up constraints tacked on. Not a bad experience, just felt like the follow-ups were where they actually decided if you knew your stuff.
  • Given an integer array and an integer k, find the k-th largest element in the array.

“The base case is pretty straightforward, sort and index.”

Meta MLE technical screen with one coding problem. The twist was they let you use AI for implementation but still grilled you on verbal explanations and complexity analysis, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Given a list of strings, determine if any string in the list is a substring of another string in the list. For example, given ["programming", "am", "pro"], return "programming" since it contains both "am" and "pro". A brute force solution is provided; write 2 to 3 more efficient approaches.

“I went in expecting maze or graph stuff and got string containment instead.”

A PM interview question from Meta asking you to think back to when Facebook only had likes and decide which reactions to actually ship. Short prompt, but it opens up into a surprisingly deep product strategy exercise.
  • You're the PM responsible for launching Facebook Reactions. Facebook currently only has the Like button. How do you decide which specific reactions to include in the launch?

“I kept wanting to jump straight to listing emotions but the real work is justifying why those and not others.”

Meta PM interview with a product design question about music learning. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully ready for.
  • Design a product that helps people learn to play a musical instrument.

“I jumped straight into features and the interviewer kind of just waited.”

Meta SWE coding round, basically just the classic array problem. Nothing fancy, nothing surprising.
  • Given an array of integers, return a new array where each element is the product of all other elements in the original array, without using division.

“Pretty standard problem if you've seen it before.”

Meta EM interview with a coding round that threw a calculator parsing problem at me. Not the most glamorous problem but it's trickier than it looks when you're on the spot.
  • Implement a basic calculator that evaluates a string expression containing non-negative integers, the operators +, -, *, /, and spaces.

“I knew this problem category but still fumbled the operator precedence part for a minute.”

PM interview at Meta, one question focused on ads policy and enforcement. Not a ton of context given but it was clearly a product strategy angle with a metrics component baked in.
  • As a PM on the ads team at Meta, how would you think about the importance of removing ads that violate community standards or legal regulations, and what metrics would you use to measure success?

“Two parts to this and I kind of shortchanged the second one.”
