Meta·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Meta ML engineer interview with a system design question focused on Facebook Marketplace. Not much to go on from the session itself, but the question was meaty enough that I left wishing I'd prepped the ML side of marketplace ranking more carefully.
  • Design Facebook Marketplace from an ML perspective.

“I went straight into listing ranking and relevance, which felt right, but I fumbled when they pushed on cold start for new sellers.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

AI Coding round at Meta for a Research Scientist role. One problem, four test files with progressively harder inputs, and a clock ticking. The real challenge wasn't solving the problem, it was solving it fast enough at scale.
  • Given an array of strings, find the maximum length of a string formed by concatenating a subsequence such that all characters in the result are unique.

“Started with a naive backtracking approach and it passed the first two files fine.”

Meta coding interview with a combinatorics problem on mobile keypad digit paths. Not a lot of context to go on, but it felt like a mid-level technical screen.
  • Given a mobile phone keypad, count the total number of possible N-digit number combinations you can form by moving like a chess knight across the keys.

“I stared at this for longer than I'd like to admit.”

Meta PM interview with a single product design question about building a parking feature into a navigation app. Pretty open-ended, which sounds fun until you're actually in it.
  • Design a parking solution for one of your favourite navigation apps.

“I picked Google Maps because I actually use it and thought that'd help me sound grounded.”

Meta coding round, one problem the whole session. It looked like a grid traversal thing at first but the arithmetic expression constraint made it way more involved than I expected.
  • You're given a 2D character grid containing single-digit numbers, '+', and '-'. Find a path through the grid that forms a valid arithmetic expression and returns the maximum possible value. You can start at any digit cell, and must move either entirely right or entirely down (no direction changes). Digits and operators must strictly alternate in the expression.

“My first instinct was pure DFS and I started coding before fully thinking through the alternating constraint.”

Meta software engineer round 3, AI coding. The problem was a scheduling/optimization thing involving orders, deadlines, worker proficiency across steps, and maximizing points. Not the kind of problem you see every day.
  • You have a set of products, each requiring multiple steps in sequence. Each step takes a different amount of time and needs a specific workstation. Workers have varying proficiency levels for different steps. Given a list of orders with associated deadlines and point values, design an approach to maximize total score by completing as many orders as possible before their deadlines.

“This is basically a scheduling optimization problem with a bunch of constraints layered on top of each other.”

Meta SWE interview built around a multi-level in-memory record store problem. Four progressively harder stages in 90 minutes, which is a lot to get through, and the data structure choices mattered more than I expected going in.
  • Design and implement an in-memory record store supporting basic add and delete operations for both records and individual fields, using hashmaps as the core data structure.
  • Extend the record store to support per-record locking and unlocking, where a locked record cannot be modified by anyone other than the lock owner, identified by a caller ID.
  • Add TTL-based lock expiration and a queue for pending writers who are waiting for a locked record to become available.
  • Support bulk operations across multiple records and conditional updates that only apply if certain field values match a given predicate.

“This part felt fine.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round at Meta for a software engineering role, just the one question but they really wanted you to sit in it for a while. No fluff, no warmup, straight into a conflict scenario and they kept probing.
  • Tell me about a real conflict you had with a coworker. Walk through what was at stake, how you understood their side of it, what concrete steps you took to resolve it, and what the outcome was for both the relationship and the actual decision.

“The part that tripped me up was the 'steel-man their position' angle.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Meta PM interview with a product strategy question that sounds deceptively simple until you realize how many moving parts there actually are. One question, but it had a lot of depth to unpack.
  • Walk me through a framework for making a go/no-go decision on shipping a feature. Assume you just joined the team and are inheriting work from the previous PM.

“The 'you just onboarded' constraint is doing a lot of work here and I almost glossed over it.”

Meta PM interview with a product sense question about improving email notifications for tagged photos. Single question, pretty focused, felt like a mid-loop product round.
  • How would you improve the email notification experience for Facebook users who get tagged in photos?

“My first instinct was to jump into features but I forced myself to slow down and think about who actually cares about these emails anymore.”
