Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jul 2026
Behavioral round for a Research Scientist role at Meta. Just the one question from what I can tell, pretty standard stuff but it still made me think harder than I expected.
  • Tell me about a project you're most proud of.

“Picked something recent and technical but then spent too long on the setup and barely got to the impact part.”

Meta SWE coding round with a classic interval problem. Nothing too wild but the edge cases will get you if you're not careful.
  • Given a collection of intervals, find all pairs that overlap and return only the overlapping portions as a set. For example, [1,3] and [2,4] overlap at [2,3].

“My first instinct was to sort by start time and then just walk through comparing neighbors.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jul 2026
ML system design round at Meta for a Research Scientist role. The whole thing was basically one long deep-dive into building a TikTok-style short video recommendation system from scratch, and it went pretty wide pretty fast.
  • Design a short-video recommendation system that serves a personalized infinite feed to hundreds of millions of users with sub-100ms latency.
  • How would you handle candidate generation at scale, and what are the tradeoffs between collaborative filtering and a two-tower retrieval model?
  • Walk through how you'd design the ranking model, including what objectives you'd optimize and how multi-task learning fits in.
  • How would you build the real-time feature pipeline to capture a user's recent watch history and update embeddings quickly enough to matter?
  • How do you prevent label leakage when logging training data for the ranking model?
  • How would you set up A/B testing for ranking model updates, and what metrics would you track on both the user side and the creator side?
  • What risks does this kind of recommendation system create around filter bubbles and content quality degradation, and how would you mitigate them?
  • How would you approach cold start for both new users and new videos?

“This is the kind of question where you think you know where to start and then realize you're already behind.”

Meta data science or analyst interview, one question about multiple metrics and how to handle the statistical testing side of it. Pretty niche but also pretty fair if you've done any real experimentation work.
  • If a single experiment tracks multiple engagement metrics simultaneously, how would you adjust your p-value thresholds and what's your reasoning?

“This is a multiple comparisons problem and I knew that going in, but I fumbled the 'why' part more than I expected.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jul 2026
Meta system design round, one massive question that basically covered every enterprise ML concern you can think of. Security, ethics, compliance, cost, monitoring, the whole thing crammed into one prompt. Left feeling like I touched everything but nailed nothing.
  • Design an enterprise ML data and inference platform that satisfies strict security and ethics requirements, covering multi-tenant isolation, PII handling, secret management, model governance with approval gates and bias audits, compliance with regulations like GDPR and SOC 2, SLOs for training and serving, and an end-to-end architecture with explicit trade-offs.

“This question is basically six interviews in one.”

Jul 2026
Meta SWE coding round with a string manipulation problem that looked easy at first glance but had some tricky requirements around deduplication and complexity analysis.
  • Given an array of strings (possibly with duplicates), return all words that appear as a substring of at least one other word in the array. The output should be deduplicated. Walk through a baseline approach and its complexity, then propose and implement an optimized solution. Include at least 5 test cases covering duplicates, identical strings, and a no-match scenario.

“My first instinct was the naive O(n^2 * L^2) brute force with nested loops and the built-in substring check, which I explained fine.”

Meta data scientist interview with a meaty statistics and product analytics question about fake news. Nothing behavioral, just one big open-ended design problem that spiraled in a few directions I wasn't fully ready for.
  • How would you design a sampling strategy to estimate the proportion of fake news on the platform, including confidence intervals? And which user interaction metrics would you use to measure its impact?

“The sampling design part I handled okay.”

Meta Data Scientist interview with a SQL and stats-heavy technical screen built around Oculus app engagement data. Three questions, all interconnected, which I didn't fully anticipate going in.
  • Write a SQL query to identify the app with the highest total minutes used in the past 30 days.
  • Write a SQL query to calculate what percentage of total time spent in the past 30 days belongs to each app category.
  • How would you test whether users in the Social category are more consistently engaged than Game users?

“Straightforward aggregation but I second-guessed myself on the date filter syntax for a moment.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jul 2026
Meta PM interview with a classic 'build the future' product question, framed around Android and a 3-year horizon. One question, open-ended, lots of room to go sideways.
  • You're a Google PM responsible for the next major Android keynote announcement, three years from now. What do you build?

“The 3-year window is what makes this tricky.”

Meta Research Engineer AI round, just one coding problem but it was trickier than it looked on the surface.
  • Given a list of words, find the subset of words that have the most unique characters, where no word in the subset contains any duplicate characters.

“Spent the first few minutes just making sure I understood what 'no duplicate characters' meant for individual words versus across the subset.”
