Meta·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Meta SWE interview with a graph/topological sort problem that looks clean on the surface but has a few edge cases that'll trip you up if you're not careful.
  • Given a list of words sorted according to an unknown alien language's alphabet, determine a valid character ordering consistent with the sort. Return an empty string if no valid ordering exists (e.g. a cycle is detected, or a word appears before one of its own prefixes).

“The core idea clicked pretty fast: compare adjacent words, find the first character that differs, that gives you a directed edge.”

Meta SWE coding round, one algorithmic question about frequency counting with a constraint that made it slightly more interesting than it sounds.
  • Given an array of integers and a number k, return the k most frequent elements. You can't use any built-in frequency shortcut methods.

“The no-most_common constraint is what trips people up here.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
PM interview at Meta with a single product design question. Pretty open-ended, no obvious right answer, which I found both freeing and a little stressful.
  • How would you design a fitness app for Facebook?

“My first instinct was to jump straight into features, which I quickly realized was a mistake.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Meta PM interview, product sense round, one question about measuring success for Facebook Events. Pretty focused session, no behavioral stuff from what I remember.
  • How would you define and measure success for Facebook Events?

“I went straight to engagement metrics and kind of forgot to anchor on what 'success' even means for the product.”

Had a product sense question for a data science role at Meta. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for coming from a more metrics-heavy background.
  • How would you improve the Facebook comments feature?

“I went straight to metrics and engagement numbers, which felt safe but probably wasn't what they wanted.”

Meta DS interview, one meaty experimentation question about hashtag recommendations. The whole session was basically a deep dive into experiment design and I felt underprepared for how many sub-topics they expected you to cover.
  • How would you design and run an experiment to evaluate a new hashtag recommendation algorithm, and how would you decide on test versus control group assignment?

“I started with randomization unit and felt okay there, user-level made sense to avoid exposure bleed.”

Meta MLE interview with a tree traversal problem that sounds easy until you're actually in it. They wanted both iterative and recursive solutions plus a real discussion of tradeoffs, not just code that runs.
  • Given a binary tree, return the values visible from the left side when viewed top to bottom. At each depth level, only the leftmost node is visible. Implement both an iterative level-order traversal solution and a recursive solution, analyze time and space complexity for each, and handle edge cases like skewed trees and missing children.

“I went straight to the recursive solution first because it felt more natural, then had to backtrack and build the iterative BFS version.”

May 2026
Meta SWE coding round, one question about implementing a circular buffer. Pretty straightforward on the surface but there's enough edge case territory to trip you up if you're not careful.
  • Implement a circular buffer from scratch.

“I started with the read/write pointer approach and it went fine until they asked about the full vs empty state distinction.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
System design round at Meta for a software engineer role. The whole thing was basically 'build Instagram' which sounds straightforward until you're 20 minutes in and the interviewer wants to talk about hybrid feed generation and you realize you prepped the wrong depth on that topic.
  • Design a photo and video sharing platform similar to Instagram. Walk through functional requirements, non-functional requirements, and your overall architecture.
  • How would you handle media storage and delivery at scale for hundreds of millions of users?
  • Compare push, pull, and hybrid approaches for generating a user's news feed. Which would you choose and why?
  • How would you approach caching in this system, and what data would you prioritize caching?
  • Walk through your data model for this system. What are the core entities and relationships?
  • How would you shard the database and scale the overall system to support hundreds of millions of users?

“I started with requirements which felt right, read-heavy workload, latency sensitivity, high availability.”

Meta SWE coding round, one algorithmic question the whole time. Pretty standard stack-based problem but I second-guessed myself more than I should have.
  • Given an array of integers, find the next greater element for each value in the array.

“Knew this was a monotonic stack problem pretty fast but then spent like two minutes convincing myself I was wrong.”
